Rebuilding the 1803 Schooner 'Independence'
American River is a small town on Kangaroo Island about 11km off the coast of South Australia.
In the winter of 1803 on the banks of what is now American River, Kangaroo Island, crew from the US Brig Union, under Captain Isaac Pendleton, from Stonington, Connecticut, USA, constructed the first vessel to be built in, what was to be proclaimed, 33 years later, the State of South Australia.
Independence was born. The vessel was used for sealing operations around Kangaroo Island and as far afield as the Antipodes Islands, south of New Zealand. She was presumed lost with all hands when making her second voyage south in 1805.
Photos taken at the RIG Boathouse, American River. Information from their brochure.
A detachment of 8Bone Grenadiers has been dispatched to repossess a QTGCorp drilling rig. Defending the site is a platoon of Hailey-3 Monopod frames. While the defenders have a greater than 2:1 numerical advantage, their frames are at a significant size disadvantage. Will the maneuverability win the day? Or will raw power prevail?

James (Jaeme Costas) hard at work on a massive rig. It seems like she’s always the one out working in the garage. She has a bit of a climb to get to the bolt she’s servicing, and when she gets there it looks like she doesn’t have the correct tool for the job!
Some more shots from the other very fine, sunny, warm autumn day, again on Calton Hill but instead of people-watching shots this time looking out. This is looking eastwards down towards the Port of Leith - as you can see a rig support vessel was just leaving harbour when I zoomed in (not too clear, bit of haze and at far end of my zoom). It reversed out, stern first, then turned to head downriver into the open sea. Amazing what you can see even fro the city centre...
Update: in autumn 2021 they started demolishing the huge old grain mill building you can see in this photo by the docks, despite being a B-Listed architectural site, so this vista will look very different soon...
Only a baby compared to some of the monsters that a lot of you own! :)

Homemade rig constructed by my dad and myself.
The total cost of all the parts was about $25.
The arm was the hardest part to make, something that 99% of people will not be able to do on their own. Pure aluminum and machined in a metal shop. It was hard, but saved a lot of money. Took roughly 2 hours to build the whole thing. There are companies that sell arms like this, but can cost upwards of $100.
Its very sturdy with the 4 suction cups. If I didn't think it could hold my camera I would never put it on there. Usually, the suction cups are closer to the edge of the car to reduce shake/vibration. It's much easier to get good shots with 2 people, 1 pushing the car and the other releasing the shutter. But 1 person is just as easy.
I got a lot of my information here www.rigshots.com.au/

Obviously, we cut it in half to increase the stability of the rig :)
A lot of people wanted me to post my before and after so here we go. Yes, I hate editing Rig shots. LOL
This is the undedited.

Please note the order of the hardware on the oarlock pin/bolt. The oarlock is on the top followed by the spacer, then nut and then fender washer. The final nut is removed so it can be inserted through the rigger, and then screwed on from the other side.
