It was design by Friede & Goldman 9500 Enhanced Pacesetter and delivered in 1983 built by Daewoo Shipbuilding at the Daewoo Okpo Korea shipyard. It is currently holding a Panama flag. The GSF Rig 135 Semisub can operate at water depths up to 730m and drill down to approximately 10000m.

This time, Jeff Morris and John Bahu joined me in the exhausting hike out to the bridge - a bit under four miles round trip.
The Pine Valley Creek Bridge, officially named the Nello Irwin Greer Memorial Bridge, is a reinforced concrete box girder bridge in San Diego County, California near the town of Pine Valley. The bridge was built in 1974 as part of the Interstate 8 (I-8) freeway system. At the time of its construction, it was the first bridge constructed in the United States using the segmental balanced cantilever method. The northern span is 1,691 ft (515.4 m) long while the southern span is 1,741 ft (530.7 m) long. The two spans rise 450 ft (137.2 m) above the valley floor, placing Pine Valley Creek Bridge among the highest bridges in the United States.
Originally known unofficially as the Pine Valley Creek Bridge, a California State Senate concurrent resolution (SCR-33) officially named the bridge in honor of the project engineer, Nello Irwin Greer, responsible for designing the section of I-8 known as the "Pine Valley Project".
In the original design, the freeway's routing followed the old U.S. Route 80 (US 80) path through the center of the town of Pine Valley. This would have destroyed much of the town and many of the native pines found there. Greer's design re-routed the freeway to the south, bypassing and preserving the quaint beauty of this eastern San Diego County mountain community. This new design also saved 2 miles (3.2 km) of freeway construction, saving millions of dollars in costs. However this re-routing of the freeway mandated the crossing of the Pine Valley Creek Canyon. The bridge that now bears Greer's name was the design answer to that engineering hurdle.

The whole rig is based on this grid construction. It´s the heaviest part of it (9.7 kg) and only lies on the pillars (on flat tiles). When I took the photos of the Rig I had to move it through my room, because otherwise it wouldn´t fit into the picture...

As night fell on North Berwick we saw something unusual from the beach - over on the Fife side of the Firth of Forth a large oil rig was moored. A common site, you can often see some there near the shipyards around Burntisland, there for repair or to be dismantled. However this one stood out in the gathering gloom, brightly lit - a look through the zoom showed they had decorated it for Christmas!!

What are the chances to be able to go out a second night to the same oil rig and get another lightning shot? Not only get another one, but get the shot you were wanting to get the night before on the first frame you take?
I've actually seen this rusting rig from Edinburgh on clearer days, but when I was over at Burntisland last week I could take a closer picture as it is moored, rusting, in the Firth of Forth by the Fife coastline, and been there for a while. I don't know if it is being decommissioned (there are some small harbours and commercial marine companies nearby) or if it is just mothballed temporarily until the oil price goes back up (the huge drop has played havoc with the oil business in the North Sea, quite a lot of rig support vessels tied up for long periods in the harbours at the moment)
