It's late morning at Rich Bar in the Feather River Canyon, unusually busy as well, when out of a rock cut tunnel a steam locomotive makes it obvious why.
My buddies and I had a plan for this day, make it up to Rich Bar early in hopes of being the first ones there, then try to follow it to a list of spots. That is exactly what we did, by getting there a couple hours in advance we had all the room to set up the shots we wanted and on the way there noted about how far apart each spot was. On top of that, we were the first ones there, and were the only ones for almost two hours. During that time, one westbound BNSF manifest passed, and eventually as time went on there would be convoy after convoy of cars, occasionally with one or two pulling off the road to shoot the train. Finally, just before 11 the Big Boy's escort came into sight as it rolled through the rock tunnel. Ten minutes later, the train we had been waiting on showed up. My friends and I would follow it down the canyon and into the valley to Marysville before calling off the chase.
The Rose-breasted Grosbeak was not muted in his singing, but the softly coloured bib, the few white feathers in the black Head and the speckled plummage down the sides make me believe this one is a first year male, and on his way to gaining those rich colours of the adult male.

The 11AM Anchorage yard job with MP15DC 1553 seen pulling a small cut off 189 flats the US Army Fort Richardson loop area for this first time in over a decade. This test load of Strykers and other equipment will be pulled back to the ARR's main yard for forwarding north back to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks regular freight service.

KCS Train GKCAD-18 is nearing the summit of the grueling Rich Mountain Grade deep in the Ouachita Mountains that boarder Oklahoma and Arkansas. Screaming their version of Rich Mountain Music is the combination of EMD and GE products fighting against the forces of gravity to lug this heavy grain train up and over the famous grade between Heavener Oklahoma and Mena Arkansas.

Three DPUs bring up the tail end of a loaded TXUX coal train fighting the last miles of the thirteen mile ascent up Rich Mountain. The train will meet two northbounds at the top of the mountain and then continue on its merry way on towards Texarkana.

Porthgwarra is a relatively unknown Cornish Cove, largely owned by Lord St Levan (of St. Michael’s Mount). It is located just under 3 miles southeast of Land’s End. Once a thriving fishing cove, it now enjoys a peaceful existence surrounded by local wildlife.
Porthgwarra Beach is a popular spot for birdwatching, with a variety of seabirds and raptors visible from the cliffs. Dolphins or seals can sometimes be seen in the sea too. At low tide there is a very small beach, with an array of interesting rock pools and caves. Swimming is relatively safe within the confines of the Cove.
One of Porthgwarra's most interesting features is the cave running through part of the cliff; there is a rope to hang on to as it is treacherously slippery. Sometimes in the evening, bats may be seen flying in and out of the cave.
Porthgwarra Beach has a rich history, and visitors can explore the cove's network of tunnels which were once used for smuggling. There are also lots of reminders of Porthgwarra's fishing heritage, although today only one boat regularly works crab pots from there. However, its appearance in the hit TV series, Poldark, has gone some way to preserving memories of the harsh realities of fishing for pilchards in the eighteenth century.

A fairly small hummingbird with a slender, nearly straight bill, a tail that tapers to a point when folded, and fairly short wings that don’t reach the end of the tail when the bird is perched.
Rufous Hummingbirds breed in open areas, yards, parks, and forests up to treeline. On migration they pass through mountain meadows as high as 12,600 feet where nectar-rich, tubular flowers are blooming. Winter habitat in Mexico includes shrubby openings and oak-pine forests at middle to high elevation.

Its shape is achieved through the stacking of inflatable donut-shaped soft acrylic tubes of successively diminishing sizes. Floating in the middle of the Eaton Centre, "Into the Blue" will present two distinct faces. From a distance, it will reflect and refract the surrounding light. Up close, one will be able to walk beneath the work and experience it as an environment. Looking up into the interior will present a dazzling light array, refracted through the complex layers of soft acrylic material."

This captivating image showcases a graceful snowy egret standing at the water's edge in Vasona Lake Park, Los Gatos. Having just crossed into Arkansas from Oklahoma, Canadian Pacific 2816 charges up Rich Mountain with the Final Spike Tour steam special this morning.
The Final Spike Tour, a 2 month round trip from Calgary to Mexico City and back, run to commemorate the merger of Canadian Pacific & Kansas City Southern (now CPKC), is the first time the Hudson has officially ran a mainline excursion since 2012, and the first time in the US since 2007.
Arctic plants have adapted to their harsh polar conditions by virtue of being small, stunted and ground hugging. Many species flourish under seabird colonies where they are fertilised by nutrient rich droppings full of nitrogen and phosphates.
Jacob's Ladder is perhaps one of the less 'ground hugging' flowers found around Spitsbergen. Its beautiful purple-blue bell shaped flowers reach skywards showing delicate yellow stamens. Its name derives from the ladder like leaves arranged along the stem.

Staring out the window as we entered the histroy-rich town of Fort Macleod, Alberta, I immediately spotted the surviving grain elevator, and a duo of aging CP motors coming to a crawl.
Once settled in, we made our way to the Crowsnest Subdivision to investigate, where we found the short train waiting in the siding for a meet that would occur shortly after sunset.
Both a far drive and a far cry from home, Fort Macleod welcomed us with double (positive) digits, absolutely zero snow, and of course the Chinook winds sweeping the land. It was hard to believe we were still in the same province as when we left home to 3+ feet of snow that same morning!
