I drew this back in 1979 (long before computer graphics), got the idea after reading an abstract about asteroid retrieval in a NASA publication. I had this book with a cool pic of an eagle and drew this (with obvious influence from Robert McCall). This is a copy of a copy (looking for the original). There was some tracing, literal cut and paste (can see the lines).

Retrieval of Asteroidal Materials [1979]

BRIAN O'LEARY, MICHAEL 1. GAFFEY, DAVID 1. ROSS, and ROBERT SALKELD

Earlier scenarios for mass-driver retrieval of asteroidal materials have been tested and refined after new data were considered on mass-driver performance, favorable delta-V opportunities to Earth-approaching asteroids with gravity assists, designs for mining equipment, opportunities for processing volatiles and free metals at the asteroid, mission scenarios, and parametric studies of the most significant variables. We conclude that the asteroid-retrieval option is competitive with the retrieval of lunar materials for space manufacturing, while a carbonaceous object would provide a

distinctive advantage over the Earth as a source of consumables and raw materials for biomass in space settlements during the 1990's. We recommend immediate studies on asteroid-retrieval mission opportunities, an increased search and followup program, precursor missions, trade-offs with the Moon and Earth as sources of materials, and supporting technology.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. While touring the SRB Retrieval Ship Freedom Star, STS-114 Commander Eileen Collins and Mission Specialist Soichi Noguchi point at something on the Banana River. Noguchi is with the Japanese space agency NASDA. The ships routinely are docked at Hangar AF on the river. On their mission, the crew which also includes Pilot James Kelly and Mission Specialist Stephen Robinson will carry the MultiPurpose Logistics Module (MPLM) Raffaello and External Stowage Platform 2 to the International Space Station. The MPLM will contain supplies and equipment. Another goal of the mission is to remove and replace a Control Moment Gyro. Launch date for mission STS-114 is under review. Automated storage and retrieval system now bring you the part, each part is kept on a tray and our computerized software can even help you keep inventory, and a FIFO or LIFO order to usage of the parts. When the trays are stored, they are stored based upon height, and periodic usage. Items with higher usage are kept closer to the access point.

Citizen volunteer Lou Winkler opens up a cage of mussels for retrieval.

The Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe and local volunteers collected cages of live mussels from three sites around North Kitsap recently as part of a national water quality monitoring program.

Run by NOAA since 1986, the program uses mussels to measure contaminants in the water, making sure levels are low enough to ensure that water is safe for marine life, recreation, fishing and shellfish harvesting.

Sampling takes place very two years and the tribe decided to participate this winter. The tribe had two sites on Port Gamble Bay and one site at Point No Point.

Cages were set out for two months and monitored before being collected in January. The samples were then taken to WDFW's labs in Olympia. WDFW is the admin for the program in Washington state.

Members of the crew of the Greenpeace ship MY Arctic Sunrise get in position to retrieve acoustic recording systems in the Gulf of Mexico near the Deepwater Horizon spill site October 5, 2010. Scientists from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the University of Southern Mississippi and experts from Omni Technologies retrieve the last of six environmental acoustic recording systems that have been anchored to the ocean floor in three sites around the oil spill recording whales sounds for the past three weeks. The data will be compared with previous studies done in the same locations. Photo by Robert Meyers/Greenpeace
