I decided to gather all of my Police, Fire and Ambulance models and figures for a shoot. As I don’t have a Police or Ambulance station layout I have used Kingsway Models kit “Gainsborough Fire Station” which usually serves me as a “Tri-Service Emergency Campus”, a combination of my previous experience of Emergency Ambulances based in Fire Stations and Google search results for real life Tri Service stations. In these pictures are all of my Scottish Ambulance Service models, focusing on the Accident & Emergency service, Patient Transport Service, Education and ScotSTAR/Trauma Team. Also included are figures painted into the older style uniform of both branches - Irish Green for A&E crews, Paramedics and Ambulance Technicians and light blue for PTS crews, Ambulance Care Assistants (ACA)
Ambulance and Emergency Medical Services in Scotland are provided by the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS), a special Health Board of the greater National Health Service (NHS) Scotland. SAS provides these services throughout all of mainland Scotland and the Islands. Emergency Medical Services are provided by the Accident & Emergency branch, providing Double Crewed Ambulances typically formed of a Paramedic and Technician, but which can be formed of double Tech or Para crews. Single Paramedics in cars, motorbikes or bicycles are Paramedic Response Units, used to provide immediate pre-hospital care to patients, or treating and discharging at scene. Also part of the A&E branch is the Urgent Tier service, using crews formed of an Ambulance Technician and Care Assistant, Urgent Tier convey patients who have been urgently referred to Hospital. The patients General Practitioner can request admission within a 1-4 hour timeframe. As such Urgent Tier vehicles use their emergency warning systems less than standard A&E crews. Due to the presence of a qualified Technician however UT resources can be used as a first responder to immediately life threatening calls.
SAS also has an Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (ScotSTAR), bringing Medical and Nursing care to patients as they transfer between Hospitals. Scotland is the only part of the UK to provide fully government funded Air Ambulance services, with two fixed wing and two rotary aircraft. They are assisted by the Scottish Charity Air Ambulance who provide additional cover with two helicopters of their own.
Special Operations Response Team (SORT) provide an emergency response to complex rescue, CBRN, terrorist attacks and other such incidents.
Scheduled Care is provided by the Patient Transport Service, the non-emergency branch of SAS. Using a variety of vehicles from cars, people carriers, minibuses and minibus conversion ambulances, PTS provides transport to and from outpatient clinics, for planned admissions and discharges. Staff crewing PTS vehicles are called Ambulance Care Assistants (ACA). They are experts in moving and handling, whereas A&E crews frequently remove patients from houses using equipment such as carry chairs, ACA’s must be adept at taking their patients back up stairs as well as extrications.
As with the majority of healthcare in Scotland, ambulance and emergency medical services are free at the point of use

3200 metres of Norwegian-made plastic pipes, each up to 480 metres long and 2.5 metres diameter - 4 of them were washed up at Winterton and Sea Palling. Initially it was reported that they 'became loose' as they were being towed from Rotterdam to Algeria.
It appears that the container ship Samskip Courier collided with the tug MTS Viscount, 30 miles north west of Dunkirk which then 'lost' the cargo it was towing ... The collision happened 19th July ... but only hit the news, 10th August when some of the pipes washed up on Norfolk beaches.

The main reason for coming here at all was to grab some of shots of this set parked on the Midland's US1, Up Slow number 1, line, the wagons having been left there a few weeks ago due to a problem with a significant wheel flat on a wagon which was subsequently slowly transported, at 5m.p.h., to Tinsley Yard, very early this morning by the Colas 60. As I recall one of the south-bound cement empties was having trouble a few weeks ago with one of its wagons and it ended up being hauled, along with two of its neighbours, back to the station where they were parked up on US1 awaiting a solution to the problem; this sort of made the station look like it used to I expect, with freight wagons parked between the main running lines. Colas class 60, 60095 came up from the Toton T.M.D., yesterday, Thursday lunchtime on the 0Z60 move and hitched up to the north-end facing rake of 3 wagons, the 'cripple unit' with one of the rake of originals at either side and the driver got out and left the set on US1. Nothing happened until the early hours of today, Friday the 6th, when at 03:41, 11 minutes late, 8xxx, i.e. 8Z60, set off from US1 with the Colas 60 in charge and the lot headed off for Nunnery and Woodburn Junction, destination the last remaining sidings at Tinsley Yard. It appears that for safety, the move progressed at 5m.p.h.. the 8 in the headcode indicating a move restricted to a maximum of 35m.p.h., which is why it didn't go during the day at a time more convenient for the photographers! It took 65 minutes to travel the 7.5km from the station to the north-eastern side of the yard where the last remaining sidings are to be found in the area now chiefly occupied by the Amey Stone processing facility and the two huge aircraft-hangar like Marks & Spencer Distribution buildings. Having arrived at 04:35 and manoeuvred to drop off the central, 'cripple' wagon, the two remaining wagons were taken back to Sheffield, an hour later at 05:25 and arrived back on the US1 line in Sheffield at 05:43, 18 minutes later, a much shorter time now being taken to cover the 7.5km, the headcode, 6Z60, indicating the set could travel up to 60m.p.h. And so, after the early morning run up to Tinsley and back, this is how the scene looked when I arrived at lunchtime Friday with Colas 60095 and the two 'Ermewa Rental', JGA cement wagons sat on US1, with not much indication that anything was to happen; which was unfortunate, because a little later in the afternoon, it did! On the right, pulling away from platform 2, after its brief station stop is East Midlands Trains class 222, 222018, on the 1C42, Sheffield to St. Pancras High Level, express passenger service. In the background a Northern Rail class 158 DMU, 158850, with 'We are Fearless' on the side panels is awaiting its next service out of the station. Beyond that, as it is now 10 minutes to midday, the class 66 Freightliner, 66619, 'Derek W. Johnson MBE, has now been given the right-away, on the continuing 6E08, Hope(Earles Sidings) to West Burton Power Station, working.
The Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (red flight suits) arrive in Dunoon to pick up a patient. The ambulance takes them and their gear to the hospital A&E to stabilise the patient for flight back to a Glasgow city hospital. In this instance they are using the Scottish Ambulance Service EC-135 helicopter (call sign Helimed 5). The pilot is in the dark blue flight suit.

Le lac Tsomoriri est un des plus grand et des plus fascinant lac d'altitude du Cahemire. Situé à 4500 mètres d'altitude, il fait plus de 30km de long sur 8km de large. Gelé sur toute sa surface en hiver, les nomades le traversent avec leurs troupeaux de yaks pour atteindre les montagnes et aller chercher le bois nécessaire à leur survie. En mars, lorque la couche de glace se restreint, il est de plus en plus fréquent de voir toute ou partie du troupeau disparaître sous leur poids dans le lac aux eaux gelées. C'est qu'ici comme ailleur, le réchauffement climatique a des conséquences terribles sur les habitudes millénaires des hommes, des animaux et de la nature. la légende veut qu'il y a quelques milliers d'années, une femme nommée "Tsomo" (prénom très commun chez les bouddhistes ladakhis) a découvert ce lac avec son âne et s'y est perdu. Cette femme, très petite "riri" a finallement donné son nom à cet endroit exceptionnel.
En 2010, alors que je me rendais en Indonésie en tant que volontaire de l'ONG Kalaweit au ceour de la jungle de Borneo, tout ou partie de l'Asie du Sud est connaissait une pénurie de pluie sans précédent. La mousson ne venait pas. Au même moment, du 14 au 18 aôut, cette partie de l'Hymalaya qui s'ouvre vers le Pakistan et la vallée de L'indus connu la plus grande innondation de mémoire d'homme dans la région (les textes les plus anciens écrits par les moines datent de mille ans). Ce sont des milliards de mètres cubles d'eaux qui se sont abattus sur le haut des montagnes entraînant boues et milliards de tonnes de rochers vers les vallées, dévastant tout sur leur passage, village, cultures, vies humaines et animales. le bilan officiel n'a jamais été communiqué.
Tsomoriri Lake is one of the largest and most fascinating high altitude lake of Cahemire. Located at 4500 meters altitude, it is more than 30km long and 8km wide. Frozen over its entire surface in winter, the nomads with their herds across the yak to reach the mountains and get wood for their survival. In March, When the course is restricted ice, it is increasingly common for all or part of the herd disappear under them in the frozen water lake. It is here as somewhere else, global warming has a devastating effect on the habits of millennia humans, animals and nature.
Legend has it that a few thousand years ago, a woman named "Tsomo" (very common name among Ladakhi Buddhists) found that lake with his donkey and got lost. This woman, very small "riri" has finally given her name to this special place.
In 2010, when I went to Indonesia as a volunteer for the Kalaweit NGO in the jungle of Borneo, all or part of Southeast Asia is experiencing a shortage of unprecedented rain. The monsoon does not come. At the same time, from 14 to 18 August, this part of the Himalayas that opens to Pakistan and the indus valley experienced the largest flood in living memory in the region (the oldest texts written date by the monks a thousand years). These are cubles billion meters of water that hit the top of the mountains causing sludge and billions of tons of rocks to the valleys, devastating everything in their path, village, crops, human and animal lives. The official death toll has never been reported.

Lotus 49R6 B/C - Car of F1-Champion Jochen Rindt, Austria (1969/1970):
Es handelt sich bei dem Lotus 49 um jene Chassisnummer R6 auf der Graham Hill 1968 den Mexico-GP und Jochen Rindt 1970 durch ein exzellentes Überholmanöver in der letzten Runde den Grand Prix von Monaco gewann.
1969 kollabierte bei Hill und Rindt in Barcelona der Heckflügel, ab Zanvoort saß Rindt in Hills reparierter Chassisnummer R6, er fuhr sofort Pole, im Rennen riß die Halbachse.
In Watkins Glen gewann Rindt damit seinen ersten Grand Prix. Das Auto mit dem 450 PS starken Coswort DFV-Achtzylinder wurde bei Hall & Hall in England komplett restauriert und war im Besitz von Joe Willenpart aus Scheibbs (A).

Wie so viele Konstruktionen von Colin Chapman wurde auch der Lotus 49 bei einem Abendessen auf einer Serviette skizziert.
Was dann am 4. Juni 1967 in Zandvoort unter Jim Clark und Graham Hill seine Rennpremiere hatte, und Clark zum Sieg führte, war der erste Formel 1, dessen Motor (Cosworth DFV) speziell für das Auto und das Auto speziell um diesem Motor herum gebaut wurde.
Der Lotus 49, der 13 Jahre nach dem Mercedes W196 erschien, sollte die Formel 1 verändern.
Am 9. Juni 1968 debütierte ein Lotus 49 mit Chassisnummer R6 im Belgien GP. In Monza erschien ein neues Chassis mit Nummer R6.
Hill fuhr R6 in Canada auf Rang vier, in Watkins Glen wurde er zweiter und dann gewann er mit R6 den Mexiko Grand Prix.
Ab Zandvoort 1969 saß Jochen Rindt in Hills reparierter Chassisnummer R6, er fuhr Pole, doch im Rennen riss die Halbachse.
In Clermont Ferrand gab Rindt mit einer Magenverstimmung auf, im GP von England wurde er von der Pole startend Vierter, am Nürburgring fiel er mit Zündungsdeffekt aus, in Monza wurde er Zweiter, in Mosport Dritter und in Watkins Glen gewann Jochen mit R6 seinen ersten Grand Prix.
1970 fuhr Jochen den R6 noch ein einziges Mal, in Spa-Francorchamps. Zweiter im Training, fiel er im Rennen mit Motorschaden aus.
1971 fuhr Willson Fittipaldi das Auto im Grand Prix von Argentinien mit 29 Runden Rückstand auf Platz neun.
Bei der Rothmans Trophy in Oulton Park war das Auto am 9. April 1971 zum letzten Mal im Einsatz und kam auf Platz sechs.
Insgesamt war die Chassisnummer R6 in der 49B/C Konfiguration 24 Mal im Renneinsatz. 19 Mal bei Grand Prix. Drei wurden gewonnen.
Joe Willenpart kaufte den Wagen von dem US-Sammler Bruce McCaw, bei Hall&Hall in England wurde er komplett restauriert. [Quelle: Ennstal-Classic, Helmut Zwickl]

Over the course of the past few months, the car offered here has become one of the most celebrated of all Bugattis, having lain submerged beneath the waters of Lake Maggiore in Switzerland for more than 70 years. The whereabouts of the sunken Bugatti had been known to the local sub aqua club for many years but in February 2008 a tragedy occurred that would eventually lead to its retrieval. On the 1st of that month, Damiano Tamagni was attacked by three youths and beaten so severely that he later died from his injuries. Damiano and his father Maurizio were both members of the local sub aqua club in Ascona (Centro Sport Subacquei Salvataggio Ascona, CSSS) and it was decided to raise the Bugatti and use the funds from its sale to further the work of a charity set up in Damiano's name, 'Fondazione Damiano Tamagi', which seeks to address the issue of juvenile violence.
But how did the Bugatti come to be in Lake Maggiore in the first place? Subsequent research has uncovered much of its history. On the 11th April 1925, chassis number '2461' was registered in Nancy, France in the name of Georges Paiva, 49 Rue des Dominicains with the number '8843 N 5'. A small brass plate found on the car after its removal from the lake bears the name 'Georges Nielly, 48 Rue Nollet, Paris' but the registration plate is only partly legible, the last digits being 'RE 1'. This registration was issued in Paris between May and June 1930, which perhaps indicates that Georges Nielly bought the car earlier in 1930 at Nancy and had it registered in Paris in his name. These French registration plates have remained on the Bugatti ever since.
The Bugatti chassis number plate is missing, as is the enamel Bugatti radiator badge. Apart from that, all the relevant numbers are to be found in their usual places. The chassis number '2461' is on the round boss, located on the right front engine bearer (on the side of the exhaust manifold and steering-box) while the engine number '879' is visible on the little round boss, located on top in the middle of the cam box, as well as at the front face of the lower crankcase, next to the water pump.
The gearbox bears the number '964' at the back as well as the usual place on the cover. The rear axle has no number, which is normal for a Bugatti Brescia, but the ratio is stamped on the central casing and reads '12 x 45'. The radiator is made by Chausson, as indicated on a plate just above the cranking handle, while the two rear spring carriers still bear the little brass plates with 'EB, Bugatti, Molsheim (Alsace)' on them. Contrary to the factory data, which mentions a Solex carburettor, the actual carburettor on the car is a bronze Zenith, correct for this type of Bugatti. The two magnetos (twin ignition) are made by SEV and mounted in the middle of the dashboard as usual for this type of car.
There are indications that the body may have been modified or replaced, the first one being, probably, a simple racing body lacking electrics and mudguards. The valances below the bonnet are in two pieces, where normally they would be in one piece, while the mudguards are slightly flared at the rear, which is unusual for 1925. All this possibly indicates a modified or new body made at the end of the 1920s.
So far, it has not been possible to determine with certainty the identity of the Bugatti's owner in Ascona. However, the most likely candidate is Marco (Max) Schmuklerski, a Zurich-born architect of Polish descent. He is known to have stayed in Ascona from 17th July 1933 until 25th August 1936 when he left and returned to Zurich. At Ascona he designed, among other buildings, the 'Casa Bellaria' an apartment block that has only recently been demolished. If Marco Schmuklerski studied architecture at the famous Beaux Arts school in Paris, it is possible that he bought the Bugatti from Georges Nielly and brought it back to Switzerland but without paying any import duties. It is also possible that he acquired the car from a French tourist (or client) at Ascona. Whatever the case, the Bugatti has always been driven in Switzerland with its last French plates and import duties have never been paid. Nor has the car ever been registered with Swiss plates.
The story going around Ascona is that Marco Schmuklerski left in 1936, leaving behind the Bugatti, which was stored in the yard of a local building contractor, Barra. Its owner at this time is not known, but the local customs officers knew of the car's existence and insisted on payment of the import duties owed. At that point these duties may have amounted to more than the value of the Bugatti, which was 11 years old and well used. In the case of non-payment of the duties, the car had to be destroyed and the simplest way to do so was to tip it into the nearby lake. To facilitate its recovery the Bugatti was attached to a heavy chain, but when this finally corroded away the car fell to the lakebed at a depth of 53 metres.
It remained there, undiscovered, until 18th August 1967 when diver Ugo Pillon located the mythical Bugatti, which was lying on its left side, partly buried in the mud. Pillon had been searching for it for some time and after its rediscovery the car became a popular target members of the local sub aqua club. On 12th July 2009, after a 73-year sojourn in Lake Maggiore, the Bugatti was finally rescued from the lake by Jens Boerlin and his comrades from Ascona's sub aqua club. Local dignitaries and members of the Bugatti Club Suisse were in attendance, and the whole story was covered in a report by Renato de Lorenzi shown on Television Ticinese (RSI 1) on 23rd July 2009.
The Bugatti was transferred by crane onto a trailer for inspection by the sizeable crowd of onlookers. Its long immersion in the lake had resulted in extensive deterioration, ferrous components being badly affected, particularly on the car's exposed right-hand side. Other materials like wood, aluminium, brass, rubber, etc have survived in much better condition. It would, of course, be possible to restore the car, but it has been estimated that only some 20% of the original is reusable. Alternatively, a faithful replica could be created, using '2461' as a pattern, for approximately the same cost as a full restoration. Arguably, it would be more appropriate to preserve the Brescia in its current state for static display, but that is for the fortunate new owner to decide.

3200 metres of Norwegian-made plastic pipes, each up to 480 metres long and 2.5 metres diameter - 4 of them were washed up at Winterton and Sea Palling. Initially it was reported that they 'became loose' as they were being towed from Rotterdam to Algeria.
It appears that the container ship Samskip Courier collided with the tug MTS Viscount, 30 miles north west of Dunkirk which then 'lost' the cargo it was towing ... The collision happened 19th July ... but only hit the news, 10th August when some of the pipes washed up on Norfolk beaches.
They will be towed back to the manufacturer: Pipelife Norway. Presumably, these giant pipes have been floating around the busy English Channel for weeks before being traced to the Norfolk coast.

Bei diesem Rennwagen von Jo Vonlanthen handelt es sich um ein echtes Juwel: nämlich um den original Ascari-Ferrari.
1952 und 1953 wurde die Formel 1 WM für Formel 2-Rennwagen ausgeschrieben. ferrari hatte mit dem Typ 500 einen 2-Liter Vierzylinder-Rennwagen, der 1952 mit 165 PS und 1953 mit 180 PS Alberto Ascari zu zwei WM-Titel mobilisierte.
Ferrari holte sich in diesen zwei Jahren alle WM-Läufe bis auf den Grand Prix von Italien 1953, den Fangio auf Maserati gewann.

The Ferrari F2 was raced for a couple of seasons where it was pitted against competition such as the British HWM, Maserati, Gordinis, and Connaughts. During those grueling seasons, the Ferrari 500 F2 proved its potential by being raced on many weekends throughout the years and emerging victorious in many of the races. The Lampredi powered car carried Alberto Ascari to two world titles and brought fame to the name, Ferrari. The car was not just limited to the factory; many privateers purchased examples and expanded the fame of the 500.
Ingegnere Lampredi was of the strong opinion that the 2-liter car did not need to be powered by a twelve-cylinder unit, but rather a smaller and lighter unit could provide many benefits. He convinced Enzo that a four-cylinder unit would be more competitive and fuel efficient. It would become one of the few Ferrari cars to be powered by a four-cylinder unit. The four-cylinder engine would be used in Ferrari sports cars and single seat racers during the 1950s. The engine was mounted in the front of the 4500 F1 derived chassis and sent power to the rear wheels. A fuel tank sat behind the driver. A small windscreen protected the driver from the elements. The front suspension was fully independent while the rear was a de Dion layout.
In 1952 'organ-pipes' were added to the vehicle. Running along the middle sides of the vehicle was an exhaust pipe which could burn the drivers elbows if not careful. A heat shield was installed right where the elbows might have hit to help ease the potential for a burn.
At the Modena Grand Prix, held in September of 1951, two factory cars had been created and were entered into the race in the Formula Junior class. It was not immediately entered into the F2 class because the competition was pretty stiff at the time and Enzo wanted to win. Ascari drove the car to a victory after averaging nearly 120 km/h.
Ferrari's big break came at the end of the 1951 season. Alfa Romeo announced their retirement from racing and as a result, the sport of Formula 1 went into a bit of a decline. For the 1952 and 1953 season, the World Championship was run under the two-liter Formula 2 regulations which was meant to keep the sport competitive. Ferrari and their 375 had been poised to dominate the season but these regulations meant a new engine was required. The Lampredi four-cylinder unit was modified with four Weber DOE 45 single-barrel carburetors, modified camshaft, and a new fuel system. The bodywork was simplified and the brakes were enlarged.
The debut of the new racer was at Siracusa, a non-championship race, where the 500 F2 easily won the race. The following two races, at Pau and Marseilles, were also non-championship races which the car emerged victorious. During the 1952 season, Ascari drove the 500 to six of the seven Grand Prix victories. The seventh Grand Prix victory was won by Taruffi, Ascari's teammate. The team consisted of three works cars driven by Ascari, Taruffi, and Farina.
Throughout the seasons, the cars were given slight modifications. Ascari's car had two slots in the tail to provide additional cooling to the oil tank and transmission. Some of the cars were given deflector tabs over the front wheels. The works cars had a slightly more tapered nose and were void of the mesh radiator grille.
The cars first defeat came at Reims at the hands of Jean Behra while driving a six-cylinder Gordinin. Ascari and Villoresi had retired prematurely from the race due to their vehicles magnetos overheating. The cars magneto arrangement was reconfigured and ready for the next Grand Prix race. The new configuration proved successful and the cars finished in the top three positions. This trend would continue for many of the following Grand Prix races. The team was victorious at the German Grand Prix at Nurburgring, and the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Ascari went on to be crowned the French National Championship and later, the World Championship.
For two seasons, 1952 and 1953, the 500 F2 dominated. In 1954 the World Championship was again run under F1 regulations with 2.5-liter formula rules. Ferrari responded by increasing the displacement size of their four-cylinder engines to accommodate the new rules, but they were unable to keep pace with the six-cylinder Maserati's and eight-cylinder Mercedes-Benz racers.
In total, six Ferrari 500 F2 racers were constructed.
