Car Day 2 !
Work continues to try and get to the impossible to get to sensor ! - Buried deep behind the black inlet manifold pipes mid left of picture !
Well, today I achieved the impossible - changed the sensor and it works !
I gave up on trying to get to it from below, and went for the dramatic act of removing all the Black pipes mentioned, together with the throttle body and many hoses and connectors.
We live in a world where it's so easy to just give up on complicated tasks, and the easy option is to scrap and buy something else. I get great satisfaction from taking on a task like this, and seeing it through to resolution !
Thanks to Vanessa for her invaluable assistance !
Now for the MOT retest !!

Calif. top court to consider employer liability for COVID infections
(Reuters) - California's top state court has agreed to decide whether employers can be held liable under state law when their workers contract COVID-19 on the job and spread it to their relatives.
The California Supreme Court on Wednesday granted a request by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to take up a case brought by Corby Kuciemba, who says she became seriously ill with COVID-19 after her husband was exposed to the virus at his job with Victory Woodworks Inc in San Francisco.
Kuciemba in a 2020 lawsuit accused Victory of negligence and creating a "public nuisance" by failing to adopt safety policies to stop the spread of COVID. She is appealing a ruling by a federal judge in San Francisco that said her claims were covered by workers' compensation and she could not sue Victory in court.
Business groups have said allowing employers to be held liable for so-called "take-home" COVID infections will prompt lawsuits not only by workers' family and friends but by anyone infected by that circle of people.
Companies including Amazon.com Inc, Walmart Inc, McDonald's Corp, and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd have faced similar lawsuits.
Lawyers for Kucimeba and Victory Woodworks did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In April, the 9th Circuit asked the California Supreme Court to take the case, saying the state court should decide whether state workers' compensation law covers the COVID infections of workers' relatives and whether employers have a general legal duty to prevent the spread of COVID.
Federal appeals courts can ask state courts to answer novel questions that arise under state laws. The California Supreme Court will decide the legal issues, leaving the 9th Circuit to apply its ruling to Kuciemba's case.
Earlier in April, the California Supreme Court declined to review a state appeals court's ruling that said a See's Candies Inc employee whose husband died after she transmitted COVID-19 to him could sue the company. It was the first ruling of its kind.
The current case is Kuciemba v. Victory Woodworks, California Supreme Court, No. S274191.

Five COVID Numbers That Don’t Make Sense Anymore
Katherine J. Wu
The past two and a half years have been a global crash course in infection prevention. They've also been a crash course in basic math: Since the arrival of this coronavirus, people have been asked to count the meters and feet that separate one nose from the next; they’ve tabulated the days that distance them from their most recent vaccine dose, calculated the minutes they can spend unmasked, and added up the hours that have passed since their last negative test.
What unites many of these numbers is the tendency, especially in the United States, to pick thresholds and view them as binaries: above this, mask; below this, don’t; after this, exposed, before this, safe. But some of the COVID numbers that have stuck most stubbornly in our brains these past 20-odd months are now disastrously out of date. The virus has changed; we, its hosts, have as well. So, too, then, must the playbook that governs our pandemic strategies. With black-and-white, yes-or-no thinking, “we do ourselves a disservice,” Saskia Popescu, an epidemiologist at George Mason University, told me. Binary communication “has been one of the biggest failures of how we’ve managed the pandemic,” Mónica Feliú-Mójer, of the nonprofit Ciencia Puerto Rico, told me.
Here, then, are five of the most memorable numerical shorthands we’ve cooked up for COVID, most of them old, some a bit newer. It’s long past time that we forget them all.
2 doses = fully vaccinated
At the start of the vaccination campaign, getting dosed up was relatively straightforward. In the United States, a pair of Pfizer or Moderna shots (or just one Johnson & Johnson), then a quick two-week wait, and boom: full vaccination, and that was that. The phrase became a fixture on the CDC website and national data trackers; it spurred vaccine mandates and, for a time in the spring and summer of 2021, green-lit the immunized to doff their masks indoors.
Then came the boosters. Experts now know that these additional shots are essential to warding off antibody-dodging variants such as the many members of the Omicron clan. Some Americans are months past their fifth COVID shot, and the nation’s leaders are weighing whether vaccinated people will need to dose up again in the fall. To accommodate those additions, the CDC has, in recent public communications, tried to shift its terminology toward “up to date.” Katelyn Jetelina, an epidemiologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, prefers that phrase, because it “allows for flexibility” as recommendations evolve. It also more effectively nods at the range of protection that vaccination affords, depending on how many doses someone’s gotten and when their most recent dose was.
But fully vaccinated has been hard to shake, even for the CDC. The agency, which did not respond to requests for comment, maintains that the original definition “has not changed,” and the term still features heavily on CDC websites. Maybe part of the stubbornness is sheerly linguistic: Up to date means something different to everyone, depending on age, eligibility, health status, and vaccine brand. Fully vaccinated is also grabby in a way that up to date is not. It carries the alluring air of completion, suggesting that “you’re actually done with the vaccine series,” maybe even the pandemic overall, Jessica Malaty Rivera, an epidemiologist and adviser at the Pandemic Prevention Institute, told me. All of this may be partly why that uptake of boosters—which sound optional, even trivial, compared with the first two shots—remains miserably low in the U.S.
< 6 feet + > 15 minutes = close contact
Since the pandemic’s early days, Americans have been taught to benchmark our risk of exposure to the virus by two metrics: proximity and duration. Get within six feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes over a 24-hour period, and congratulations—you’ve had a “close contact.” Even now, the CDC advises that this kind of encounter should trigger 10 full days of masking and, depending on your vaccination status and recent infection history, a test and/or a five-day quarantine.
Thresholds such as these made some sense when researchers weren’t yet savvy to the virus’s main modes of transmission, and at least some efforts were made to contact trace, Jetelina told me. “You needed some metric so you could call people.” Nearly all contact-tracing attempts, though, have long since fizzled out. And scientists have known for years that SARS-CoV-2 can hitch a ride in bubbles of spittle and snot small enough to drift across rooms and remain aloft for hours, especially in poorly ventilated indoor spaces. Pathogens don’t slam up against a magic wall “at the six-foot mark,” Malaty Rivera said. Nor will viruses bide their time for 14 minutes and 59 seconds before launching themselves noseward at 15 minutes on the dot. Exposure is a spectrum of high to low risk” that factors in, yes, proximity and duration, but also venue, ventilation, mask quality, and more, Popescu said. “It’s not just ‘exposed’ or ‘not exposed.’”
The CDC acknowledges that SARS-CoV-2 can move beyond six feet—but the scientific justification behind its guidelines on preventing transmission was last updated in May 2021, just before the Delta variant bamboozled the nation. Since then, the coronavirus has gotten even more contagious and crafty—better at transmitting, better at dodging the antibodies that people raise. “Even passing interactions and encounters have led to people becoming exposed and infected,” Malaty Rivera said, especially if people are indoors and a ton of virus is being volleyed about. And yet, the mantra of “six feet, 15 minutes” has stayed. Schools have even cut the guidance in half, counting close contact only when children are less than three feet apart.
5 days = end of isolation
In the beginning, isolation numbers loomed large: Infected people had to wait at least 10 days after their symptoms began, or after their first positive test result, before they could reenter the world. Then, at the start of 2022, the CDC slashed the duration of isolation to just five days for people with mild or asymptomatic cases (regardless of vaccination status), as long as they kept masking and avoided travel through Day 10. You didn’t even need a negative test to go about your life.
This guideline has been perpetually behind the times. For much of 2021, truncating isolation might have made sense for vaccinated people, who clear the coronavirus faster than folks who haven’t gotten their shots, especially if negative tests confirmed the safety of exit. But only after the rise of Omicron did the guidance change—and it was based mostly on pre-Omicron data. The shift in guidance arrived just in time for the coronavirus to bust it wide open. After nearly two years of COVID symptoms starting around the time people first began to test positive, test positivity with Omicron and various iterations is now quite frequently lagging the onset of illness. Many people now report strings of negative results early in their symptom course, then positives that persist into their sixth, seventh, or eighth day of sickness or later, raising the possibility that they remain quite contagious past when formal isolation may end. “I find it impossible to believe you can end isolation without testing,” Malaty Rivera said.
And yet, many workplaces have already embraced the five-day rule with no exit test, using that timeline as the basis for when employees should return. With masks largely gone, and paid sick leave so uncommon, defaulting to five days could drive more transmission—in some cases, likely inviting people back into public when they’re at their infectious peak.
Infection + 90 days = no retest
According to CDC guidelines, people who have caught SARS-CoV-2 don’t need to test or quarantine if they’re exposed again within 90 days of their initial infection. This recommendation, which appeared in the pandemic’s first year, was designed in part to address the positives that can crop up on PCR tests in the weeks after people stop feeling sick. But the CDC also touts the “low risk of subsequent infection for at least 6 months” on one of its pages, last updated in October 2021. Reinfections “can occur” within 90 days, but that’s “early.”
That framing might have once been pretty solid, before the era of widespread at-home antigen testing—and before the rise of antibody-dodging variants, Popescu said. However, reinfections have gotten more common, and far closer together. They were happening even in the era of Delta; now, with so many immunity-evading Omicron offshoots at the helm, and masks and other mitigation matters mostly vanished, they’ve become a quite-frequent fixture. The number of people who have caught the virus twice within just a matter of weeks “has grown so much that we should forget these windows,” Malaty Rivera said. Even the Department of Health and Human Services secretary recently tested positive twice in the same month.
And yet, with these guidelines in place, many people have been lulled by the promise of rock-solid post-infection immunity, assuming that a new crop of symptoms are “anything but COVID,” Malaty Rivera said. That thinking is not only allowing a growing share of contagious coronavirus cases to go undetected—it’s also stymieing the study of reinfection dynamics writ large. Many studies, including those cited by the CDC in its guidance, won’t even count reinfections earlier than 90 days. But the 90-day number, Malaty Rivera said, is no longer relevant. “It has to be deleted from people’s minds.”
200 cases + 10 hospital admissions per 100,000 = mask?
As obsolete as some of America’s COVID calculations may be, updates aren’t a universal win, either. Take the most recent iteration of mask recommendations from the CDC. The agency would like everyone to mask indoors if their county hits a “high” COVID community level, a threshold that is met only when the region logs 200 or more infections per 100,000 people in one week, and if local hospitals see more than 10 COVID-related admissions per 100,000 people in a week, or fill at least 15 percent of their inpatient beds. Currently, roughly 10 percent of U.S. counties are in the “high” category.
But waiting to just suggest masks at those levels of transmission and hospitalization—not even require them—leaves far too much time for widespread disease, disability, even death, experts told me. A bar that high still lets long COVID slip through; it continues to imperil the vulnerable, immunocompromised, and elderly, who may not get the full benefit of vaccines. Case rates, Malaty Rivera pointed out, are also a terrible yardstick right now because so many people have been testing at home and not reporting the results to public-health agencies.
In Puerto Rico, Feliú-Mójer and her colleagues have been struggling to reignite enthusiasm for mask wearing as their community battles its second-largest case wave since the start of the pandemic. A better system would flip on protections earlier—taking a preventive approach, rather than scrambling to react. But that’s a difficult stance for jurisdictions to assume “when the official map looks so green and a little yellow,” Feliú-Mójer said. It’s the problem of thresholds striking once again: No one cares to take up arms anew against the virus until the damage is already done. That’s made the pandemic that much easier to tune out—it’s either here in full force, the thinking goes, or it’s totally gone. If only the calculus were that simple.

My first forage into car ownership began with this Mark I Mini 850. I passed my test in 1976 after 10 lessons in a Datsun Cherry, and bought this twelve year old Mini. It cost £150 with a year's MOT, but by the time of the next retest the rear subframe was on the verge of collapse and it went to the big car park in the sky. Today in good condition they fetch £10K, but that's life as they say.

Founded by Warren Winiarski in 1970 in what is now known as the Stag's Leap District of Napa Valley, Stag's Leap Winery began producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines.
Stag's Leap came into the spotlight in 1976 in what was known as the Judgement of Paris, a panel of French wine experts preformed a blind taste test to rate the top Chardonnays and Bordeaux and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. To everyone's surprise, the top pick for the red wines went to Stag's Leap 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon, beating out all of the French red wines. The French were horrified (or alternatively dismissive) and demanded a retest, and two years later the test was redone. Stag's Leap again won first place. After being publicized by Time Magazine, the test showed the World that California wines, largely dismissed by sommeliers, had come of age and were of comparable quality to French vintages.
Winiarski sold the winery to Chateau Ste. Michelle and Marchesi Antinori Srl for $184 million in 2007. Stag's Leap continues to be highly regarded by wine experts, ranking 6th and 4th in 1984 and 2nd in 2006. A bottle of the 1973 vintage is now at the Smithsonian Institution.

Yes, this is the progress I've made since I ripped it out. I cast on for it the second time on the fourth of July. I'm not doing the "take a picture of my progress every day" thing anymore. I've finished the decreases at the bust and am doing the zigzag cables at the waist now.
This time around I'm using circular needles instead of straight, because I just barely had room for all the stitches on the straight needles before, and making a larger size means more stitches. I'm worried because the circulars are just barely larger than the straights were--the straight needles were a small size US 6, and the circs are a real US 6. I didn't retest my gauge, so I'm just asking for it to be too big now.
Well...with just a smidgen of luck this will be our home for the next 3 nights!
It's not exactly the nice long break that we originally hoped for, but after all of our work over the last week, it's a pleasant reward :D
We finally fixed the problem with the uneven braking today and the MOT tester checked them for us and confirmed that in the retest tomorrow they'll be fine.
Woo hoo!
Finally! After a few rounds with the maker of the inexpensive $37
desulfator kit I finally have two working 12V lead acid battery
desulfators. My neighborhood electric vehicle has two batteries which
are performing badly. At the moment I'm testing one battery which was
working great two weeks ago and now has a voltage of 10.6V. I found
that two cells have a specific gravity of zero. I will retest the
specific gravity in each cell tomorrow and see if there is any change.
This battery should be able to entirely desulfate itself within 10
days. Hopefully I will be able to repair lots and lots of batteries
with these desulfators.

I became increasingly interested in testing specific methods within art during this project. Kwangho Shin's paintings have always sparked my curiosity and using oil paint, craft knife & knife I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome - this was a retest from previously using Shin's style using acrylic and a brush which I felt had a weak impact. As shown, I then tested sgraffito (acrylic & oil pastel) with a knife to recreate Kollwitz's art. I tested fineliner pens (not removing hand from page), and oil pastel.
During the testing of new wagons, poor riding or instability was often caused by insufficient damping in the suspension; this could be attributed to contamination of the friction damper surfaces, which meant that the bogie or suspension had to be dismantled to clean and de-grease before a retest was carried out.

I wonder if they need to retest daily. Color management issues in the cold weather using projector lamps.

was on the run at Stn 27 Redditch, H&WFB. She was new in 1977 and gave long service until around 1996 when the HP at 27 was dis-established, but replaced by a Volvo x6 chassis but with the original booms from WUY322R fitted (after retesting & refurbished). The 'new' HP was then moved to Bromsgrove stn.25.
I'm a little scared and wary now! The gunked Auto Reveunon 50mm beats two better lenses and shows you should freelense old M42 lenses on your Nikon instead of using an adapter with glass. This is with a generic M42 to F-mount adapter with glass, but at F/1.9 it's a blurry mess where the focuspoint (206 on the key) was. I'll need to retest this photo with the more expensive Kipon adapter (with glass for focus to infinity) and a glassless M42 to F-mount adapter. The Auto Revuenon was $3 and can achieve wonderful stuff when freelensed! (see the this photo)

You're Vaccinated for COVID-19, and You Just Tested Positive. Now What?
Like millions of Americans, Kevin was vaccinated against COVID-19 in March to protect himself. But the Tuesday after visiting bars with friends over a rainy Memorial Day weekend in Provincetown, Massachusetts, he had a running nose and some congestion.
“I thought it was typical springtime allergies in New England,” said Kevin, 42, who spoke on the condition that his last name not be used. The symptoms worsened to headaches, body aches and sleepless nights. His doctor told him that it might be the flu but suggested a coronavirus test. The result was positive.
“You don’t think it will be you,” said Kevin, who isolated in his Provincetown townhome for 10 days.
“At the end of the day, the vaccination still worked,” he said. “I didn’t get as sick as people who got COVID prior to the vaccination being available.”
‘Breakthrough’ cases are rare.
If you’re one of the small number of fully vaccinated people who later test positive for COVID-19, what should you do?
COVID vaccines have been highly effective in preventing COVID-19, especially hospitalization and death, and are generally working as expected, doctors say. The vaccines also reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
Although the risk of vaccinated people becoming infected with the virus is low, it can still happen, experts said.
“Yes, this will happen, unusual but will happen," said Dr. Sandro Galea, dean of the Boston University School of Public Health.
Those rare cases are called breakthrough infections and as of April 30, there were more than 10,000 of these infections reported from 46 American states and territories, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC has stopped recording such infections if there are no severe symptoms, so the number for cases, including mild ones, is most likely higher.
What to do if it happens to you?
A fully vaccinated person who experiences symptoms consistent with COVID-19 should isolate themselves from others, the CDC said.
“Broadly, someone who tests positive should isolate for 10 days,” Galea, noting CDC guidelines, said.
Dr. Eric Cioe-Peña, director of Global Health at Northwell Health in New Hyde Park in New York, said the guidelines were not much different from those for someone who tested positive before the vaccines were available.
“You still have to isolate,” he said. “You still have to contact trace with the understanding that your peace of mind is a little bit better.”
People should also inform their health care provider of their positive result. If you leave home to go to the doctor, wear a mask and practice social distancing.
“Fundamentally, though, someone should isolate and then retest, with the latter probably in consultation with a provider,” Galea said.
But what about people in your home?
The infected person should stay in a separate “sick room” or area and use a separate bathroom, if available.
“If possible, maintain 6 feet between the person who is sick and other household members,” the CDC said.
This is important because an infected person — even one without symptoms — could pass the virus to someone who is unvaccinated, including children under the age of 12 or people who cannot get a vaccine because of immune-related or other health issues.
The center noted that the coronavirus spreads between people who are in close contact through respiratory droplets that are produced when someone talks, coughs or sneezes. The virus also spreads through respiratory droplets among people who share the same indoor space.
But, Cioe-Peña said, the level of virus in the nose and droplets are not as contagious in a vaccinated person.
“You probably aren’t going to pass this on,” he said.
Residents should frequently disinfect touched surfaces in the household if someone is sick or has tested positive for COVID-19.
It might be helpful to turn on fans and open doors and windows for fresh ventilation in the residence. And do not share household items such as utensils, cups and towels for the quarantine period, the CDC said.
How serious are breakthrough symptoms?
Cioe-Peña said an infected person who had been vaccinated might have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
“In the post-vaccine era, testing COVID-positive is a lot less scary,” he said. For “the vast majority of people — 99.9% of the time — I am going to be OK. I am going to have a mild case. I may not even notice.”
The most serious symptoms include nasal congestion and mild body aches, said Dr. Sunil Sood, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore in New York.
“It would be the mildest of the end of the spectrum of COVID-19,” he said. “It may be just a mild common cold.”
But this may be different in vaccinated individuals with weak immune systems like older adults and people with certain medical conditions or those who take certain medications.
There have been some high profile cases.
TV host Bill Maher was fully vaccinated when he tested positive last month during weekly staff testing, prompting HBO to reschedule the taping of two of his shows. At the time, he said he felt “perfectly fine.”
On June 10, two fully vaccinated passengers aboard a Celebrity cruise ship tested positive and had to isolate, according to the Royal Caribbean Group. The passengers were asymptomatic.
And in May, the New York Yankees’ two-time All-Star shortstop, Gleyber Torres, tested positive after vaccination, as did three coaches and four staff members.
While most infections are likely to produce mild or no symptoms, many of these cases would not have been discovered without routine screening.
Will this become more common?
“We are going to see people pop up and be positive, but it’s not meaningful because your chances of passing it to someone are much lower,” Cioe-Peña said. “Certainly, we will hear stories — my friend’s neighbor got vaccinated and tested positive. If we continue to get people vaccinated, we will hear these stories of one-offs.”
Still, doctors emphasize the effectiveness of the vaccines and encourage people to be fully vaccinated as supplies and appointments are now widely available in the United States. This is particularly true as the new highly contagious Delta variant becomes more widespread during the summer travel season.
“It provides a solid degree of protection,” Sood said. “It provides the freedom to move around and go on with your daily life and activities almost before it was this pandemic.”
I am still working from home while they are taking care of mold remediation at the office. Taking forever. They are still using the hepa filter in the closed off areas and then will retest the air to see if it is clear in order to start building back.
I didn't do a lot today. The weather was still nice so we had the rest of the BBQ'ed food outside as a family. That was cool. Other than that, mum decided to spring up the fact that I have my driving theory test tomorrow so I had 12 hours to revise. Fabulous. This is a retest too because I failed last time by one wrong answer! Absolutely gutted.
This guy always flies around the area, usually really low too. He did his rounds this evening and left again, over the horizon. He flies back and forth a few times, circling the area before leaving again. He must be local. All I know as of now is;
he's a badass.
Joe and I just got home from an overnight hockey game and were happy to see Polly. While we were away, Darren took her to the vet for her first check-up and she tested positive for feline leukemia. We are sad, but hopeful she may fight it off, and will retest her in a few months. And, even if not, we'll just hope she has some healthy years ahead to spend with us.
