The Fiat G.91 served as the definitive aircraft for the Frecce Tricolori (the Italian Air Force’s National Aerobatic Team) for 18 seasons, spanning from 1964 to 1981. Affectionately known by pilots as the "Gina", it replaced the American-built North American F-86E Sabre, marking a proud milestone as the team’s first indigenous, Italian-designed and manufactured jet.
The first two modified aircraft arrived at Rivolto Air Base on December 28, 1963. The team flew a 9-aircraft formation over Rome for Republic Day on June 2, 1964, followed by their first full aerobatic display at Turin-Caselle on June 7, 1964.
Designed by legendary engineer Giuseppe Gabrielli, the G.91 won a 1953 NATO competition for a lightweight tactical strike fighter. Its aesthetics heavily resembled a scaled-down North American F-86K Sabre.
The G.91 PAN Variant Modifications: to optimize a combat cacciabombardiere (fighter-bomber) into an agile showstopper, Fiat engineers developed a lightweight, specialized variant designated the G.91 PAN (Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale). Key modifications included weapons Removal. The nose-mounted machine guns, ammunition bays, and armor plates were stripped out. Dead weight was re-introduced into the empty gun bays to maintain the aircraft’s strict center-of-gravity requirements during extreme high-G aerobatics.
The Smoke System: an aggressive oil-and-dye smoke injection system was plumbed directly into the engine tailpipe, giving birth to the team’s famous tricolor white, red, and green smoke trails.
Flight control systems were fine-tuned, and a pitch damper (smorzatore di beccheggio) was added to maximize low-altitude stability during tight formation flight.
The G.91 PAN era is widely considered the golden age that cemented the international prestige of the Frecce Tricolori. The jet was incredibly robust and responsive, allowing the team to expand its routine to a staggering 9-plane formation plus a solo soloist, showcasing intricate, high-speed maneuvers like the Cardioide and the thrilling Azzurro.
Over 18 seasons, the G.91 fleet suffered the loss of 12 airframes and sadly claimed the lives of 8 team pilots. To offset these operational attrition losses, the team supplemented its original pre-production airframes with standard G.91R/1 reconnaissance variants converted to PAN standards.
The G.91 PAN was officially retired from aerobatic duty at the end of the 1981 season, handing the mantle over to the legendary Aermacchi MB-339PAN.
the G.91 was retired from military service completely by April 1992.

Responsive ASCII will display a website through ASCII art. The pointsize of the monospaced font won’t change while resizing the window. This makes the resolution depending on the size of the window, not on the size of the monospaced font. This website, made for the introduction of the monospaced font Zeitung Mono, has a button to switch from normal view to ASCII view.
