Sue Wong may have cast the biggest shadow at Los Angeles Fashion Week, but a handful of smaller and emerging brands here captured the hearts of attendees..
Wong's fall 2015 "Mythos & Goddesses" collection, which on Monday kicked off four days of shows under the Art Hearts Fashion umbrella at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, was the designer's homage to the goddesses Aphrodite, Artemis and Athena. The result? Lots of draped, regal-looking pieces that would seem right at home in the halls of Mount Olympus: long beaded gowns with trains trailing out behind them, strapless peplum gowns, drop-waist gowns with pleated lace skirts and Grecian halter gowns with beaded neckbands. Many of the looks — which were heavy on intricate beadwork and embroidery — were accessorized with statement-making headgear: jeweled crowns, fan-shaped peacock-feather headdresses, Medusa-like headpieces and even a warrior-goddess spiked metal helmet that caused audible gasps from the audience. From the glamorous clothes on the runway to the chaos of the crowd, it was a fashion show scene right out of Central Casting.

UNESCO, with the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), financial support from the Government of Japan, and in partnership with the Institut de la Francophonie pour l'Education et la Formation (IFEF), the International Center for Girls' and Women's Education in Africa of the African Union (AU/CIEFFA), the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) and Microsoft, is organizing a regional training of trainers for representatives from the Ministry of Education and teacher trainers on gender-responsive STEM education in order to engage, inspire and empower more girls and women to undertake STEM studies.
The training adopts a theory-to-practice approach, drawing on UNESCO’s Cracking the Code report, the US Mission to UNESCO’s TeachHer initiative, and other resources and programme experience. The modules explore the situation related to STEM education in Africa, gender-responsive STEM education, gender-responsive pedagogy, gender-responsive teaching resources, and ICT integration in STEM education. The methodologies employ a mixture of interactive pedagogy including guided group activities, role play, group-based problem-solving and field visits, to build on participants’ facilitation skills.
The training of trainers is currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya (3-14 September 2018). The regional training will take place from 22-26 October with national teams of 6 to 8 people from 12 French-speaking African countries (Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Comores, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, and Senegal). Responsive Textiles was created in relation to the idea that clothes are a second skin to the body, and therefore they should be as unique and human as we are. This is why designer and founder, Kristine Rodriguez, personally creates the fabric and structure of every garment by hand. Each piece is a product of labor, love and conceptual thought. "How do you like the A-20 airplane?" I asked.
"Oh, It's a wonderful airplane. Very responsive, and fun to fly. We're having a great time."
We talked some more about the airplane and the crew that he had.
He had only been at Mitchell Field for a few months, and hadn't had a chance to get acquainted in the area at all.
I gave him the names of two girls that I had gone to High School with who still lived I the area and were not 'attached'.
He said that he and his friend would give them a call.

Floater is a chaise longue designed together with Mathias Bernhard at the Chair for CAAD, ETH Zurich and was produced in close collaboration with Kläusler Acrylstein AG.
The elegant sinuous design is based on the distinctive material properties of acrylic stone combined with advanced digital design and fabrication techniques. Generative modeling and analyzation tools were used to maximize the available area on each sheet of 12mm “HI-MACS solid surface” and minimize stress due to bending. The design was adopted according to these parameters and split in three parts to be manufacturable from standard sheet dimensions. The 2D-CNC cut flat pieces were then vacuum formed on 3-axis CNC milled MDF molds and afterwards seamlessly glue-joint to form a single monolithic shell. The wings on each side appear to hardly touch the ground and emphasize the floating appearance of the chaise. They also enable the user to gently rock back and forth while relaxing on the smooth and durable surface.
Four prototypes have so far been realized in Alpine White, Fiery Red and Black. The project is still under development but different colors are available on demand.
