A dedicated team of refugees cleaned up Blackburn town centre as part of the borough-wide Your Call campaign encouraging more people to take responsibilty for their community.
The 25-strong team of community champion refugees from 10 different countries said thank you to the borough by tackling grime and litter in and aroundthe centre on Saturday, December 17.
The group visited the borough's Mayor Karimeh Foster and were inspired to give something back to the borough they have taken to their hearts.
Traditional music from the countries, including: Eretrea; Ethopia; Congo; Zimbabwe; Sri Lanka; Togo; Mali; Uganda; Kenya and Somalia was played throughout the day.
Council leader Kate Hollern said: "This kind of activity is exactly what the Your Call campaign seeks to encourage. It's about the Council empowering communities to help them help themselves and make this borough one we can all be proud of. These residents are fighting for the borough and we want to create an army of willing volunteers.
"I would like to thank the refugees for taking the initative and doing something that will benefit everyone who lives, works and visits Blackburn."
Cllr Hollern added: "Keeping the borough clean and tidy is the responsibility of everyone.
"We would urge everyone to do their bit and take pride in their neighbourhood."
Before dawn on January 2, the first working day of 1884, Conductor George Barber and Engineer Richard Jeffrey picked up their orders at the Hamilton Station and began their usual ritual. Jeffery read the order to Barder: their Special Freight No. 420 was to "Run to Queens Wharf avoiding regulars." The Hamilton operator called the attention of both men to the regular NO. 13 train traveling west from Toronto and told them that they would have to wait at Mimico Station until No. 13 cleared the main track. only then would they be given permission to proceed to their destination. Barber signed the order with the customary "32" signifying that he understoof his instructions. Freight 420 soon pulled out of hamilton.
At 7:00 a.m. the regular No. 13 suburban train left Toronto station in a snow storm and moved along the Humber bay. The dummy engine only pulled two passenger cars. On Board were at least 43 men on their way to work at the Bolt & Iron Factory on the Humber River. Many of them were the sole wage earners for their families. They included James Kelly, a blacksmith, who had none children ranging in age from 15 months to 19 years. The youngest employees were Charles Stanely and john Mackenzie, age 14, and Eddie Robinson, age 12.
John Kenndy, engine driver for the westbound suburben, later testified:
We were running on... as usual, and just after passing High Park I discerned the headlight of another engine. The other train was between 250 and 300 yards when i saw it. I immediately put on the brake and whistled for brakes on the cars. I did all I could.
Kennedy and two crewmen then jumped, They were not injured thanks to cushioned fresh snow.
The shriek of te whistle and squel of the brakes ceased with the thump of the impact. The suburban's dummy engine disappeared, but it boiler and the engine of Freight 420 came to a stop in the front passenger car. The boiler then burst spraying steam and water in all directions while the rear passenger car exploded in flames.
Those living nearby ran to the scene in order to help, but could no have been prepard for the sight awaiting them. A reported wrote, "Every possible phase of disfigurment was to be seen.... limbs cut, bloodied, mangled, half eaten away by fire. no horror was left to the imagination.... No nightmare of the wildest could show anything more awful than this scene... The relief part were obligated to almost tear men from under the wreck notwithstanding their groan and cries."
The three words repeated most frequently in the newspapers the next day were "mangled, scalded and burned." in all 32 died as an result of the collision. After the public funeral for 18 vixtims, Alex and William Turriff were buried in a ravine at the Toronto Necropolis Cemetery. Their mutal cause of death is inscribed on a zinc marker.
Immediately following the disaster, Conductor George Barber was jailed for his own protection because the public blamed him for the accident. They suspected that he was asleep in a caboose car when it took place. At the inquest he accepted full responsibilty for the event:
I was aware the suburban train was a regular train. I was aware it was my dty to avoid ths train. A conductor has full control of the running of the train. I read over the orders to the engineer, and he understood what they meant.... I forgot all about this train. We should of stopped at Mimico for order if I had thought of the suburban train.
Today commuter trans, buses and cars speed around Humber bay oblivious of the drama that occured there more than one hundred years ago. There is no plaque. Only lines on a few eroding gravestones in downtown cemeteries suggest that Toronto once had a horrendous train disaster.

My best mate Tom and his other half Emma are due to have their baby at the end of December.
So a sort of last weekend of carnage was in order before Tom's impending fatherhod & responsibilty.
8 hardy souls journeyed to Croyde for the weekend. These 4 fella's Paul, Duncan, Algy & Phil, plus Guru & Tom all braved the cold water for a bit of surfing.
Meanwhile Jesus and I spent the weekend topping up the evenings drinking by boozing during the day & completing lego starwars on the PS2.
Though i did nip out for a brief walk along the beach and to take my photo of the day.

The Gisimba orphanage, located in the Nyamirambo quarter of Kigali, is led by Damas Mutezintare Gisimba. Damas's father founded the orphanage in 1980 with 18 children living in one house. Damas took over in 1986 after the death of his father. During the genocide Damas sheltered over 400 children and adults in the small orphanage compound from the predations of the interahamwe [the Hutu paramilitary squads that carried out much of the genocide]. Though the orphanage was repeatedly menaced, Damas and his colleagues held their ground and did not give in to the genocidaires. He has been honored for his heroism by the Rwandan government and many other organizations.
The orphanage currently houses over 150 children. Ten years ago almost all were genocide victims, but many of the newer arrivals have been orphaned by AIDS. Because their parents were HIV+, a number of them are also infected."

Uploaded as a counterpoint to the "Power of processing", this capture has only been slightly cropped, thus preserving all of its native, uncorrected colour cast (colour temperature), "sharpness", contour, natural shading, as well as more strictly assuring its expected sense of place (that is in front of an ordinary wall). Its extremely rare that I do not process but when truly warranted I will forgo it, even in an intrepretive image such as this versus a straight documentary or informational one. Ultimately all photo images are edited in the sense they are either retained or not but the ultimate decision to process lies with the photo producer and reflects our responsibilty to perform our own work and interpret our peer's with a truly open mind.

Denise Kiyetesi translates my English instruction into Kinyarwanda. Her little brothers and sisters eagerly follow their older sister's teaching. Only 17, Denise is already a natural teacher--patient, thoughtful, and encouraging.
Life at the orphanage encourages a true collaborative and collective spirit so that each child feels themself part of a huge extended family. Mother to many, Denise is always ready to nurture and nuzzle a younger sibling. She takes her role seriously, often comforting the smallest orphans with a quick embrace or a gentle squeeze.
Denise hopes to become a doctor one day and return to care for Gisimba's next generation. I'd like to see her dream realized.
How would you like to help Denise and her brothers and sisters realize their dreams?

There are thousands of street children in Butare. Everyday they scavenge for food. Some make their home in trash heaps boardering the streets. At night, these children burrow beneath blankets of rotted refuse, heads at odd angles to the highway.
Some of these children are orphans, others come from broken or abusive homes, a sobering fact which can turn street life into near sanctuary.

Notice - SKAM does not endorse the killing of oneself or others. SKAM endorses an open communication about the damage humans have done to our planet.
The Recycle Yourself Project is meant to invoke an emotion and discussion about such issues as Overpopulation, Pollution, Ecosystem Destruction Humans responsibility to the Environment, Culture Jamming, Art intervention and Anti-Commercialism/over-consumption.
The Recycle Yourself Philosophy
For billions of years the earth has recycled the life that has existed on it. Through a natural cycle. At one time the Human race followed that natural cycle. The humans lived hand and hand with the environment taking and giving back to the land. Even after death humans at one time gave their actual bodies back to the planet to decay in a natural way. Over time mankind has forgotten about our beautiful planet and how it created the life that exists on it. Then comes the age of the industrial revolution and corporations built upon mass consumerism. Marketing companies assault us ever day. By the time you are 5 years old you've already had 200,000 images planted into your brain from television and ad campaigns. This false reality is built and constructed into our minds to appear that if its sold on tv there is an unlimited supply. Buy buy buy this constructed ads tell us that there is nothing wrong with this behavior. The status quo is a false reality.
The real reality
Humans have already started what will be known as the 6th mass extinction on our planet. This has been created by the abuse we've done in the last 300 years to our mother earth. The western mindset has infected the entire planet. Kill, rape and pillage, give nothing back. Even in death humans turn themselves in plastic wrapped corspe's that seep poisons into the ground that in turn effect our drinking water. Cancer, disease, and viruses are a by-product of our planet trying to control this over consumerism culture. Mother earth will win this war in the end but it will be at the expense of all forms of life on our planet. Education is the only thing that will change this behavior. If you want to climb the mountain you don't just jump to the top. This change needs to happen in steps. The first is being aware of such steps. If humans so selfishly ignore these warning signs. Some day there will be no fish in the sea, no birds in the sky, no whales in the ocean, no dogs to follow their masters, no flowers to bloom, no bees to pollinate them. This is a reality.
Now you have to ask yourself?
Do you want to be responsible for a dead planet?
Educate
Reduce
Reuse
Recycle Yourself!

I'm finding the my birthday is becoming less significant for me with each new year. The sad truth is I don't have many friends any more and the few that I do have or spread across the country and I'm not really close to my family, though they are trying (long story). My friend Tim and his partner are in Austin, My friend John is in San Jose, Honey is in Boston still I think (I can never keep track), and my friends here in Houston (Eric, the two Michaels, and Albert) are kind of busy doing there own thing so we often talk on the phone more than we see each other in person. So for me my B-Day is kind of Just another Day. So my friend Eric tries to take me out to eat to celebrate the day whenever we can arrange it. This year was the first time in a while that we were able to do it on the actual day, for the past few years it has been falling on days that I work. So we went to an Indian Restaurant that I had never been to before, Shiva, and just hung out. I really had a good time. There hasn't been too much of that lately.
Actually I am feeling a bit overwhealmed and the only way that I think I'm making it through it is by not thinking about it at all and just doing what I need to do to keep everything from falling apart. The say the past year has been rough is an understatement. The main theme for the past year was dealing with health issues. For the first part of the year I had foot problems which culminated with having to have a growth removed from the sole of my right foot. Thankfully it came out benign but I'm still in the healing process and am not quite back to 100%. They told me it could take at least a year before all the nerves grow back and that it would hurt periodically throughout that time. All I'll say is that they didn't lie. Having to stay off my feet brought other issues but I won't go into that. Needless to say I've pretty much gained back whatever weight I lost and have been dealing with unnecessary pain because my insurance refused to pay for something that my Doctor's requested. That was going to be another running theme for the year. But I guess it is what it is. But I was kind of bummed about not being able to get out and take pictures and such.
My real running problem is my mom. I think I've alluded to the fact that she can't really live by herself. Her health has been slowly deteriorating over the last 12 years or so and it seems lately that process has been speeding up a bit. I've been noticing that she is fogetting things more and more. And she fell twice while I was at home. One of the times I couldn't get her up by myself and had to try and talk her through doing it herself. I'm a little out of my element trying to help people when they are in that much pain. There were several times over the past year where I've had to deal with situations that were clearly beyond my scope. She has good days and bad days but I can kind of see where things are going to be five to ten years down the road if things continue along the route they're going. She can still do most things for herself but there are times I have to push her to at least try. That has been a challenge in itself. I'm learning new levels of patience and new levels of failure. He,he,he Being an only child a lot of the responsibilty falls on me. Truth is I probably take on more than I should. I have been in the parent role for a really long time and have missed out on a lot of things that many of the people I know have gotten to experience. I kind of feel bad for her though. She went in for rotator cuff surgery and wound up in the hospital for six weeks from complications. That situation was bad enough that she doesn't want them to do her other arm even though she needs it. So between all of the physical therapy and the other health complications she had a really rough year. I think after her third time in the hospital last year I was starting to think maybe I'm in a little over my head.
I have been working nights to help accomodate all of the stuff that I do for her. I have been working that schedule for thirteen years. My job decided that I didn't need to work that schedule anymore. Without asking me they put me on a 5 AM to 4 PM schedule pretty much ruining everything I used to be able to do. In fact I'm finding I have even less time to take care of myself because I'm having to squeeze everything I used to do in two of my days off. I guess the only good thing is I'm sleeping a little more as opposed to the 3 or 4 hours I used to get on the old schedule. When someone mentioned that I take care of my mom to management they informed them that schedule was changed for business needs and if I or anyone else had any problems with that then we could seek employment elsewhere. The funny thing is they never said it to my face. My mom was a little upset by the changes but I told her not to worry about it. If I needed to take her somewher she needed to go to that she couldn't get to her by herself then I wouldn't be into work that day. At this point I don't care if I get paid for missing that day or not. You can replace a job, you can't replace a person. Unfortunately what all the changes mean is I can't do most of the stuff I used to and it means putting her in a situation where she was at home by herself after having cataract surgery to put all of her drops in her eyes and do simple things around the house when she was not supposed to be lifting or doing anything strenuous. She's hard headed so i know she did things she wasn't supposed to. My fear is she's going to fall and have to lay there for eleven hours until I get back home.
So to say that I've had more on my mind lately is a bit of an understatement. I'm not usually this gloomy but Winter is always hard for me. We've had stretches of uncharacteristic cold a quite a bit of rainy, gloomy days that were starting to get to me as well as my mom's upcoming surgery. Like I said I have a bit on my mind. I'm sure everything will work itself out. I just needed to get this somewhere besides stuck in my head. Sorry I got a bit long winded.
Anyway, Dinner at Shiva's was excellent. Indian is the only vegetarian food that I really, really enjoy. My mom is treating me to lunch or something today so I have to figure out where I want to go. Yay, for free food two days in a row!!!

"Centre Memorial de Gisimba (Gisimba Memorial Center)

New tram deliveries tend to be of highly standardised designs, such as the Siemens Combino. Helsinki was an early customer for the Variotram, as designed by ABB (which became Adtranz in 1995) and took 40 between 1998 and 2003. HKL (Helsinki City Transport) has been far from satisfied with their performance and had threatened to send them back. As successors to Adtranz, Bombardier agreed a compromise with HKL, undertaking the responsibilty for the trams' maintenance.

About GerryPADI Open Water Scuba Instructor
Pareja Subdivision is located on a 10 hectares area. We lived at the end of the First Street of about 1,000 meters distance away from JCAquino Avenue leading to the commercial district of Butuan City. There were then only few houses built on a 300 sq.m lots where Gerry Beltran lives with his siblings and Parents. He grew up with my children Antonio and Wilfredo, Jr. when they were yet below the required age for admission in Grade One.
