I have been feeling nostalgic lately (yeah I know not really a big stretch for me). While going through some piling paperwork on my desk I ran across the most recent birthday card my uncle Bobby gave me this year that had two pictures of me that he took when I was a kid. As it is with many American raised children I fell in love with Superman as a child---well I wanted to be many different superheros (my favorite was most likely Spiderman---who incidentally also was a photographer as his alter ego). ;-)

I like this picture a great deal, because it reminds me how simple and imaginative children can be. It reminds me of a time when so many things were new and full of interest and yet somehow not as complex and difficult as things often seem today. As a child if I saw a stranger in need of help, my first thought was to simply help them. Now I hesitate and wonder if it is safe to pull over and help a stranger in need. As a child when I saw someone crying, my first thought was to go and hug them. Now I wounder if I would be thought as strange. I so desperately want to believe and know that I still have the spirit and goodness of a child inside of me, but the truth is those days are mostly gone and I can never have them back no matter how nostalgic I get. All things grow old and change. It is what makes us both so great and at times also so tragic.

It is this simple fact that makes pictures like this so important to me; when the world gets too heavy and cynicism starts to creep into our lives we need to be reminded that at times we need to channel the inner child within us and choose to love unabashedly. I think Jesus understood this very well because he said things like, if you see a person who is hungry then go feed them and if you see a person without home or clothing then shelter and clothe them. More simply put, Jesus often told us to act like children. I will never be Clark Kent or Superman anymore or have my childhood back (some stuff from my childhood I would never want back), but it doesn't mean I can't be a superhero still.

A side note about this picture: I recall vividly of being crushed when my mother would not let me go to bed with my cape on. She told me that she didn't want me to accidentally choke at night. I was like, but Mom Superman isn't going to do something as stupid as choke on his own cape! Good thing my mother knew better than the little man of steel!

When you take the boat cruise on Upper Waterton Lake, in Canada's Wateron Lakes National Park, your tour will stop briefly for a view of the international boundary between Alberta, Canada and Montana in the United States. There you will see a very visible line - a clearing in the forest - which marks what is called the longest undefended border between two countries in the world. Actually, the border is defended, but by police and not military personnel.

Clearing of brush and vegetation for 6 meters (20 feet) on either side of the line is the responsibiliity of the International Boundary Commission. Since 1925 the Boundary Commission has had the responsibilty for surveying and mapping the boundary, maintaining boundary monuments (and buoys where applicable), as well maintaining the clearing. Exactly why it is felt a clearing is necessary is anybody's guess.

time to relax...time to abandone all worldy responsibilties...time to spoil your self with ice moca drink that makes everything just too fine !

when you want to feel free of all obligations, think of hot coffee with a piece of paper, called newspaper, to spend your liesure time ! LooooooL

After a few hours at the orphanage, we made our way back to the town's center where we intended to catch a matuka to the little cathedral a few kilometers south. As Valante and I were leaving, the children started doing backbends and jumping up and down. Essentially, they were putting on a show--but they were sincere, innocent, totally unrehearsed and into their impromptu choreography and acrobatics.

I marveled at their limber, pliant bodies torpedoing(sp?) through the air, or wrestling on the grass. It was especially hot this afternoon, the sweat a sleak reminder of the inescapable sun.

We all squinted, but these two boys in particular gestured. The middle, he looks sort of pensive, even angry--doesn't he? When I leaf through my images of him, I remember being captive to a gaze that idled between curiousity and mystery.

Upclose, you can see, he's an old soul.

Gloster/Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF14 at the RAF Museum, Cosford, 8 July 2020. The aircraft was hung from the cieling and the presence of three huge V-bombers beneath it meant that a even half-decent photograph was not easy.

Even though the Luftwaffe had first deployed jet night fighters in the closing stages of WWII (a small number of Messerschmitt Me262B-1a/U1 and Arado Ar234B-2/N), the RAF had no jet night fighters until 1951 when the Meteor NF11 entered service.

Responsibilty for the development and production of the night fighter variant of the Meteor, already an aging design, was handed over by Gloster to Armstrong Whitworth (an associated company) and several marks were built culminating in the impressive-looking, long-nosed NF14 of 1953; it lasted in service until 1961 (1965 as night fighter trainers whilst NF11's converted to target tugs served until 1968).

The Meteor night fighters, together with the de Havilland Vampire and Venom night fighters, were really no more than an interim solution to the need for a modern night fighter until the Gloster Javelin was brought into service, an advanced design which was taking longer to develop than anticipated.

The Meteor NF11, 12, 13 & 14 had a good radar, but only a cannon armament so were not in the same class as the American night fighters of the period such as the missile-armed versions of the Lockheed F-94 Starfire, Northrop F-89 Scorpion and the all-weather versions of the North American F-86 Sabre, all of which had very impressive avionics/radar suites for the era.
