Blue leather ledger containing the minutes of the George Waterston Letterpress Machine Chapel Minutes 1913 - 1956.
Accession Number: SH.2009.402
The chapel is a work based print union. The use of chapel is thought to derive from the proximity of Caxton’s printing press to Westminster Abbey or through the close association of the early industry with the church and theological writings.
The General rules of the National union of printing, bookbinding and paper workers 1964 state that 'At every firm where two or more members of the union are employed they shall form a chapel and appoint one of their number to act as father or clerk of the chapel. Any member working in a firm without a chapel is requested to communicate with the branch secretary'.
The chapel would take responsibilty for the day to day management of union members. The chapel would be presided over by either a mother or father of the chapel. The MOC or FOC would be responsible for negotiation with printing house management. The chapel would also be tasked with collecting union dues.

The Gisimba orphanage, located in the Nyamirambo quarter of Kigali, is led by Damas Mutezintare Gisimba. Damas's father founded the orphanage in 1980 with 18 children living in one house. Damas took over in 1986 after the death of his father. During the genocide Damas sheltered over 400 children and adults in the small orphanage compound from the predations of the interahamwe [the Hutu paramilitary squads that carried out much of the genocide]. Though the orphanage was repeatedly menaced, Damas and his colleagues held their ground and did not give in to the genocidaires. He has been honored for his heroism by the Rwandan government and many other organizations.
The orphanage currently houses over 150 children. Ten years ago almost all were genocide victims, but many of the newer arrivals have been orphaned by AIDS. Because their parents were HIV+, a number of them are also infected."

"The warmth of his tiny body snuggled against mine filled me with a peace and serenity that elevated me above the chaos. This child was alive yet terribly hungry, beautiful but covered in dirt, bewildered but not fearful. I made up my mind: this would be the fourth child in the Dallaire family. I couldn't save Rwanda, but I could save this child.
Before I had held this boy, I had agreed with the aid workers and representatives of both warring armies that I would not permit any exporting of Rwandan orphans to foreign places. When confronted by such requests from humanitarian organizations, I would argue that the money to move a hundred kids by plane to France or Belgium could help build, staff and sustain Rwandan orphanages that could house three thousand children. This one boy eradicated all my arguments. I could see myself arriving at the terminal in Montreal like a latter-day St. Christopher with the boy cradled in my arms...
That dream was abruptly destroyed when the young soldier, fast as a wolf, yanked the child from my arms and carried him directly into the bush. Not knowing how many members of his unit might already have their gunsights on us, we reluctantly climbed back into the Land Cruiser. As I slowly drove away, I had much on my mind.
By withdrawing, I had undoubtedly done the wise thing: I had avoided risking the lives of my two soldiers in what would have been a fruitless struggle over one small boy. But in that moment, it seemed to me that I had backed away from a fight for what was right, that this failure stood for all failures in Rwanda.
Whatever happened to that beautiful child? Did he make it to an orphanage deep behind the RPF lines? Did he survive the following battles? Is he dead or is he now a child soldier himself, caught in the seemingly endless conflict that plagues his homeland?
...Engraved still in my brain is the judgment of a small group of beaurocrats who came to 'assess' the situation in the first few weeks of the genocide: 'We will recommend to our government not to intervene as the risks are high and all that is here is human.'"

June, 2005.
Gitarama was a killing field in 1994.
There are thousands of street children in Butare. Everyday they scavenge for food. Some make their home in trash heaps boardering the streets. At night, these children burrow beneath blankets of rotted refuse, heads at odd angles to the highway.
Some of these children are orphans, others come from broken or abusive homes, a sobering fact which can turn street life into near sanctuary.

The Recycle Yourself Project is meant to invoke an emotion and discussion about such issues as Overpopulation, Pollution, Ecosystem Destruction Humans responsibility to the Environment, Culture Jamming, Art intervention and Anti-Commercialism/over-consumption.
The Recycle Yourself Philosophy
For billions of years the earth has recycled the life that has existed on it. Through a natural cycle. At one time the Human race followed that natural cycle. The humans lived hand and hand with the environment taking and giving back to the land. Even after death humans at one time gave their actual bodies back to the planet to decay in a natural way. Over time mankind has forgotten about our beautiful planet and how it created the life that exists on it. Then comes the age of the industrial revolution and corporations built upon mass consumerism. Marketing companies assault us ever day. By the time you are 5 years old you've already had 200,000 images planted into your brain from television and ad campaigns. This false reality is built and constructed into our minds to appear that if its sold on tv there is an unlimited supply. Buy buy buy this constructed ads tell us that there is nothing wrong with this behavior. The status quo is a false reality.
The real reality
Humans have already started what will be known as the 6th mass extinction on our planet. This has been created by the abuse we've done in the last 300 years to our mother earth. The western mindset has infected the entire planet. Kill, rape and pillage, give nothing back. Even in death humans turn themselves in plastic wrapped corspe's that seep poisons into the ground that in turn effect our drinking water. Cancer, disease, and viruses are a by-product of our planet trying to control this over consumerism culture. Mother earth will win this war in the end but it will be at the expense of all forms of life on our planet. Education is the only thing that will change this behavior. If you want to climb the mountain you don't just jump to the top. This change needs to happen in steps. The first is being aware of such steps. If humans so selfishly ignore these warning signs. Some day there will be no fish in the sea, no birds in the sky, no whales in the ocean, no dogs to follow their masters, no flowers to bloom, no bees to pollinate them. This is a reality.
Now you have to ask yourself?
Do you want to be responsible for a dead planet?

"Mbuyisa Makhubo, the schoolboy who picked up Hector [Pieterson], was harassed by the police after the incident and eventually went into exile. His mother, Nombulelo Makhubo, told the TRC that she received a letter from him from Nigeria in 1978, but that she had not heard from him since. She died in 2004.
The first casualty
Hector was not the first child to die in the 1976 Soweto uprising. Another boy, Hastings Ndlovu, is believed to have been the first child to be shot on that fateful day. But in the case of Hastings, there were no photographers on the scene, and his name never became famous. It is believed that Hastings died several days after the shooting. Eliot Ndlovu, father of Hastings, passed away in 2004.

Carla McAuliffe, "Girl Scouts Learning Responsibility on a Trip," photograph, 2003, _Krista McAuliffe's Collection_, Roswell, GA.
This photo was taken in Valdosta, GA on a Girl Scout trip. On this trip, we learned responsibility by taking care of the horses on the farm. Not only do Girl Scouts and Guides travel in present day, but they also traveled when the organization was founded. Although the Girl Guides were started in Great Britain, the effort soon moved to other countries as well. The Girl Guides provided girls the opportunity to travel and leave their homes. During the World War I Girl Guides were trained as nurses and replaced the Boy Scouts to run messages between offices in the intelligence buildings. They also replaced Boy Scouts as messengers in the censorship offices because girls got into less mischief than the boys. Also during the war, girls picked sphagnum moss for wound dressings, made sandbags for the men at the front, collected and sent out newspapers to the front, made scrapbooks for convalescents, taught English to Belgian refugees, worked in canteens, assisted in the export of tobacco to the troops, and helped distribute leaflets from central government offices to assist recruiting. They provided entertainment for wounded soldiers and their wives and mothers. They also made ammunition boxes, other munitions, and ‘treasure bags’ which were cloth bags that the wounded soldiers could keep their valuables in while in the hospitals. The Guides frequently traveled to the dedications of war shrines or monuments of the dead. Not only did Guides travel abroad helping the war effort, but they also traveled to work outside of the home. They would go to work from 9am to 7pm with little break and would bring home ten shillings per week plus dinner. Not only were they expected to fulfill their work duties, but they were also expected to parade every Monday afternoon on the roof of the Waterloo House, which ties them to the military yet again. Once the World Conferences were created, areas would send girl delegates to the conference to vote on important legislation and then report back to their region. In 1926, the first World Conference in America was held. On April 26th delegates from almost every country in Europe met in London to sail to America for the conference. They all met at Camp Edith Macy in New York. After this conference, Guiding and Scouting began growing throughout the world. By traveling to these conferences and helping soldiers in the war, girls got the chance to travel and meet other Scouts and Guides from other countries. They no longer were confined to the feminist roles they once were and although they were closely watched by their parents, they were allowed to leave the home and work and travel. They were being given more and more responsibility, sometimes even more responsibility than the Boy Scouts.

_____________________
There were several homeless men sitting on the various benches in this park. I'd mention to this man that since the fall of 2004 I had been photographing the 1101 New York Avenue block www.flickr.com/photos/perspective/sets/846734/ which is situated behind him. And though, in the past, and out of respect for the subjects, I had not photographed any of the homeless men and women who congregate in this particular park I now plan to introduce myself to them with hopes of capturing them in conjunction with my ongoing documentation of the redvelopment of the 1001 New York Avenue complex.
My memories of this park date back to the fall of 1972 when I'd catch trhe Greyhound bus from Southern Maryland to Washington DC to join friends who lived in College Park and who attended the University of Maryland.
Staying with them in College Park, over the weekend, we would visit the gay bars on 9th Street and go dancing gay dance clubs in SW and SE, The Pier 9 and The Lost and Found in, respectively.
Since the late 80's and through much of the 90's, in the fall and spring of the year, I would visit the uniform store at the corner of 11th and I Street where is where I'd purchase my seasonal supply of chef aprons for catering.
In photographing the redevelopment of the 1101 New York Avenue complex not only will I continue to focus on the architectural changes as well as the construction workers but, perhaps, so as to shed light on the issue of gentrification I have a responsibilty to document and capture the homeless people who congregate, sleep, and live in the park.
Once I got closer to this gentleman and would take some up-close shots of him I would learn that this man goes by Big Country.

Captain Adriannos de Moore ,could often be seen surveying the vast ocean that lay before him , from his vantage point in the Crows nest of the Santa Esmaralda. The Cape lay ahead, he vowed he would not succumb .
The crew were used to his eccentric ways , but held him in high esteem. From De Moore's cabin , many's the night , the midnight oil burned . into the wee small hours ,the sounds of the stringed instrument called the Gibson, played sweet refrains into the night , and on other less solitary occasions De Moore, regaled the crew with tales of the strange and wonderful lands he had traversed , as the grog flowed, the Gibson , under De Moores skilful fingers , played tunes that caused many a salty dog , to abandon their cares and join in the hoe downs .. ......................weaving , and playing a percussive rythmn , Indiana de Stamtos , the first mate often played alongside the captain to the delight of the others, ............................
The young cabin boy a spirited young blade called Nelmac, was the bane of De Moore's life, however, the old sea captain felt a sense of responsibilty for the lad , times he felt he was truly an innocent abroad, however not for the first time , had he threatened, to keel hawl Nelmac as he had been caught at the rum , and always came up with a wild explanation , as to why. They made me test it captain De Moore, they said it didnt taste right, I had to , they made me.
Ah , the boy was a quick learner, and keen as mustard , and even cook , said that young Nelmac, that lad has a way with food, aye indeed , he scoffs more than double he should for such a scrawny young blade.
No , Cappin sir, he showed me the strange ways of the land down under, where he learned a strange thing , called , barrrbeeque. the boy had strange potions in a cache , hidden , and used to pour them on the portions of salt beef, and do magical things with the flames . ah captain , theres a bit of a wizard about young Nelmac, Ozsure about that

How things change: There was a time when intellectuals opposed opening or expansion of private schools, engineering colleges and other professional institutions. English was to be taught only from Class VI. The middle class suffered due to such "revolutionary" ideas coming from the intellectuals. Today - the taboo towards private institutions has receded. English is back in primary schools. But will these intellectuals take responsibilty for the debacle and causing so much harm to students for over twenty years?
