BUHMC-FMS, 15 November 2012. On 6th Aaron, patients are lined up side-by-side along the length of the corridor enjoying the songs of a guitarist who has volunteered to play for them. Increasingly, more families come to visit. Life at BUHMC seems so normal, yet this is a deployment. This is testament to the enjoyable environment the hospital and PHS-1 team has provided in response and relief efforts to Hurricane Sandy. Normally, Rapid Deployment Force Teams such as PHS-1 staff a 250 bed FMS and utilize a cache of equipment supplied by the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response in a building of opportunity. Usually that building is a large gymnasium, a school, or an empty warehouse. To be co-located in a hospital is the best possible scenario for the patients. In the tumultuous times of the hurricane, it is important to give the patients the most normalcies available. We have done that here. This only happens with good relationships and leadership.
