Water taxi on the Spree, at the heart of Berlin's government district. The buildings are, from left to right: 1) the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus, a parliamentary building named after Jakob Kaiser (1888 - 1961), a member of the Zentrumspartei, Christian trade unionist, and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime. 2) The Reichstagspräsidentenpalais which, until 1919, was solely used as a residence for the respective president of the German Reichstag. During the Weimarer Republik democratic panels were held there. Nowadays, it houses the Deutsche Parlamentarische Gesellschaft (German parliamentary society), a non-party association of members of the German Bundestag, the German state parliaments, and the European Parliament. 3), of course, is the Reichstag building, the seat of the German government. Hoisted up on the roof of the Reichstag building are the German national flag and also the flag of Europe (on the left, unfortunately, you can't see the wreath of stars here).

Processing-wise, I did a lot with Lightroom's new masking tool. I have mentioned it earlier, whenever I think that I'm done with the subscription and am finally ready to cancel it, Adobe comes up with something good that makes me "stay". The new (auto) masking tools in LR are such a "good something", they make it so easy and convenient to process different parts of an image with different adjustments. Since it's (Sliders) Sunday, I didn't leave it at LR adjustments, of course. I also went into Color Efex and applied several filters (please don't ask me which, I can't remember) for that "over-processed Sunday look" ;).

HSS, everyone, have a nice week ahead, and take care!

I learned technical drawing at school with this kind of pens (Rotring Isograph).

The pens on the picture deliver lines of respective thicknesses 0.20mm (8 Mil), 0.35mm, 0.5mm and 0.7mm.

They could be a delight to use, delivering perfect lines with a constant thickness and a deep black color if you were in a good day.

They could also be a source of frustration and refuse to get enough ink on the paper... or drip on an almost finished drawing.

But with hindsight, this had mostly to do with how good you took care of them and how relaxed you were when using them. 😉

Amazing extra feature: you could erase mistakes once the ink had dried by carefully scratching the paper with a razor blade.

In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol comprising a visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals, or particles suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body. The droplets and crystals may be made of water or various chemicals. On Earth, clouds are formed as a result of saturation of the air when it is cooled to its dew point, or when it gains sufficient moisture (usually in the form of water vapor) from an adjacent source to raise the dew point to the ambient temperature. They are seen in the Earth's homosphere (which includes the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere). Nephology is the science of clouds which is undertaken in the cloud physics branch of meteorology.

There are two methods of naming clouds in their respective layers of the atmosphere; Latin and common. Cloud types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adaptation of Luke Howard's nomenclature. Formally proposed in 1802, it became the basis of a modern international system that divides clouds into five physical forms that appear in any or all of three altitude levels (formerly known as étages). These physical types, in approximate ascending order of convective activity, include stratiform sheets, cirriform wisps and patches, stratocumuliform layers (mainly structured as rolls, ripples, and patches), cumuliform heaps, and very large cumulonimbiform heaps that often show complex structure. The physical forms are divided by altitude level into ten basic genus-types. The Latin names for applicable high-level genera carry a cirro- prefix, and an alto- prefix is added to the names of the mid-level genus-types. Most of the genera can be subdivided into species and further subdivided into varieties.

Two cirriform clouds that form higher up in the stratosphere and mesosphere have common names for their main types. They are seen infrequently, mostly in the polar regions of Earth. Clouds have been observed in the atmospheres of other planets and moons in the Solar System and beyond. However, due to their different temperature characteristics, they are often composed of other substances such as methane, ammonia, and sulfuric acid as well as water.

Taken as a whole, homospheric clouds can be cross-classified by form and level to derive the ten tropospheric genera and the two additional major types above the troposphere. The cumulus genus includes three species that indicate vertical size. Clouds with sufficient vertical extent to occupy more than one altitude level are officially classified as low- or mid-level according to the altitude range at which each initially forms. However they are also more informally classified as multi-level or vertical.

Checking the respective Flickr groups as well as some of your – my dear readers' – Photostreams, I came upon some very impressive wide angle close-up work. My love for this particular discipline rekindled, I simply couldn't sit still any longer. But what to shoot?

Mantis religiosa in the Ruhr region are sadly still a few years of climate change away. We have no colourful geckos, hand sized spiders or tropical katydids...

But wait, we've got palearctic katydids! :D

The Great Green Bush-Cricket is quite common and might not seem very fancy a subject to people in Central Europe. "It's not even endangered", they might mewl. But on closer inspection I find it quite interesting. Did you, for example, know that these cute little "Heupferdchen" (literally: hay horsies) are primarily predators of other insects and don't shy away from some opportunistic cannibalism either? Well, I didn't.

So after listening to some audiofiles of their stridulation and arriving in probable habitat I was able to locate and photograph four male individuals in a few hours. The shot above features the last and most cooperative of the bunch.

Edited scene of „CLAY AND SEED“ by Haveit Neox with Bamboo Barnes and Lilia Artis in second life.

----------------------------------------

Comment by the creators:

„CLAY AND SEED

A collaboration of art, utilizing 3D, 2D, and Text. For the Clay and Seed exhibit, Bamboo Barnes chose to focus on 2D artwork, Lilia Artis on poetry, and Haveit Neox on sculpture and architecture. The goal was to have these disciplines unite into a single work, which in this case of three like-minded artists, occurred organically.

Haveit’s galleries provide the supporting walls for Bamboo’s imagery, while Lilia’s poetry garnishes the windows of these clay buildings and thus closes the circle. During the process, each artist’s work contained a seed of inspiration for the other two. Being admirers of each other’s works for many years, it seems destiny smiled on these three with the opportunity to share their visions together and in an art region that inspired their creativity.

Describing the erosion of the environment and human relationships, the work of all three artists explores the fields of destruction, growth, abuse, hope, gratefulness, and loneliness..“

A pair of Union Pacific eastbound trains appear to be in competition as they drag their respective trains through Uintah, Utah.

If I were to bet, I would lay my money down on UP 9100 will arrive first at Strawberry, where CTC ends and ABS current of traffic begins.

In theory, UP's Evanston Sub dispatcher is routing 9100 through the CTC crossovers ahead of UP 3715 for the lengthy ascent through Echo to the summit at Wahsatch.

A pair of trains from BNSF and NS are found west of the 10th St crossing in North KC, neither of which have power for their respective roads.

Sitting dead on Main Track 1 of the joint BNSF Brookfield Sub - NS Kansas City District is BNSF train H-BRCKCK1-14A with a pair of Canadian Dash 8's, a BC Rail "barn" C40-8M and a CN C40-8W built originally for the Santa Fe.

Next to it on Main Track 2 is NS train D70 led by power from last night's transfer from BNSF's Argentine Yard to NS's Avondale Yard, an Ex-BN SD60M and an Ex-ATSF GP39-2. They have with them a train of autoracks being transferred across town from NS's Voltz Yard to Argentine, and they're holding here until BNSF's Ustick Dispatcher to call them down to the signal at Block 224 once Argentine's released them.

At this time, I had Friday's off, and upon receiving intel the afternoon before about a BCOL barn leader on the BRCKCK, things began lining up pretty well for a decent day of phoaming. This train commonly ran the former Q across Missouri at the time, and it was called at Brookfield, MO at 0030. It arrived here at 10th St around sunrise, providing the possibility of a good chase through town with such an exotic leader, but even with several hours left to work, the train never got route and Argentine ultimately refused the train. It wouldn't be until sometime after before it was recrewed.

The day wasn't a total loss, as we shot some other cool things, namely a Santa Fe Yellowbonnet SD40-2 pair and NS's Reading heritage engine on a UP train. I decided to at least come over here and shoot it tied down in the afternoon, as it is in fairly good spot with the elevator in the background and the code line poles on the left. On my way there, I got a tip that D70 had pulled up alongside it with a Cascade Green SD60M leader, which I have to say, definitely enhanced this shot and sort of made up for being skunked earlier that morning. I've posted a more head-on shot of these two before, but I kind of like this angle, too, since the code line poles are gone now.

Both the BC Rail barn and the CN C40-8W have been retired and I believe sold for scrap, if they haven't been cut up already. The BNSF SD60M No. 1455 lived around Kansas City for a few more years in the transfer pool before being sent to Galesburg, IL in 2020 to be used as part of a hump set. It's now in Topeka LUFS. 9/15/17.

Urgut is a town in the Samarqand Region of Uzbekistan and the capital of Urgut District. It is known for the grove of plane trees, some of which are more than 1000 years old. Urgut is located in mountainous areas.

Urgutlik (also known as Urguti in Tajik) people are a subgroup of ethnic Uzbeks who track their ancestry to people from a town of Urgut. There are almost 500,000 people who describe themselves as Urgutlik. Urgutlik people frequently use Tajik words in their daily conversation. Majority of the population speak Tajik and Uzbek.

Urguti people are heavily involved in basic mercantile trading in their respective locations and in farming. In the town craftsmanship is also well-known which has been maintained traditionally throughout the centuries.

Urgut's biggest market with varied and relatively inexpensive merchandise attracts folks even from Samarkand, the capital of the Region.

Roald Amundsen (often abbreviated Roald; named in honor of Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen), originally named Vilm, is a German steel-ship built on the Elbe River in 1952. Having worked in different areas, she was refitted in 1992 to 1993 as a brig (two-masted square-rigged sailing ship) and now serves as a sail training ship. During summer, she usually operates in the Baltic Sea, and usually embarks for journeys to farther destinations for winter, including several trans-Atlantic crossings.

Description

Roald Amundsen has a length overall of 49.8 m (163 ft), a length of hull of 40.8 m (134 ft) and a waterline length of 38.2 m (125 ft). The vessel has a beam of 7.2 m (24 ft) and a maximum draft of 4.2 m (14 ft). Roald's masts reach a height of 34 m (112 ft) and are rigged with 18 sails with a total area of 850.0 m2 (9,149 sq ft). The vessel has a displacement of 480 tons and has a tonnage of 298 gross register tons (GRT).

Roald Amundsen has an 8-cylinder Buckau-Wolff diesel engine rated at 220 kW (300 hp). The vessel is equipped with two generators, one of 48 kW (64 hp), the other of 53 kW (71 hp). The ship can carry 180 tons of ballast. Roald Amundsen has crew of 17 with up to 31 trainees embarked.

Ship history

The hull of the ship was built at the shipyard Roßlauer Werft on the Elbe River in Roßlau, German Democratic Republic, in 1952. Originally intended for fishing as a deep sea fishing lugger, plans were changed before the completion of the ship, and she was then instead built as a type of tanker. The vessel was completed at the shipyard Peene-Werft in Wolgast, Germany, on the Baltic Sea.

Named Vilm, the ship was put to use for the National People's Army (NVA), first as a tanker and supply vessel, operating out of Peenemünde and crewed mainly by civilian seamen. Converted to a transporter for bilge water in the 1970s on the Peene-Werft, Vilm then made regular trips to the bases of the National People's Army to take the ships' bilge water to a centralized treatment facility. This service was discontinued at the end of 1988.

After not having been used for a year, Vilm was towed to Neustadt in Holstein and there at the navy base used as living quarters. At the beginning of 1991, the ship was put up for sale by the Vebeg GmbH, a corporation to sell federal property.

Detlev Löll and Hanns Temme purchased the ship at an auction and, with the help of some of the former crew, sailed the ship to Wolgast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In spring 1992, a complete overhaul began, in the course of which the ship received a new exterior keel and was refitted as a brig; the rig includes five square sails at each mast and includes lifting yards for the upper-three yards (upper main topsail, topgallant and royal) at each mast, lowering the center of gravity of the ship when sails are furled. The overhaul was subsidized by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Bundesagentur für Arbeit and formed part of the job creation program "Fridtjof Nansen" (led by the owner), which comprised the refitting of this ship as well as other sailing ships Fridtjof Nansen and Nobile.

In 1993, the ship was put to its new use under the name of Roald Amundsen. It was chartered by the newly founded sail training club LebenLernen auf Segelschiffen e.V. (short: LLaS; German: learning to live on sailing ships). After a short intermezzo with another sail-training club, Segelschiff Fritjof Nansen e.V., in 1993, Roald Amundsen has since been chartered by the LLaS and used for sail training.

Roald Amundsen now operates all year around as a sail training vessel with voyages lasting between one and three weeks. Her home port is Eckernförde, a harbour city in Schleswig-Holstein near Kiel in northern Germany. Summer months are spent with voyages on the Baltic Sea from Denmark to Baltic countries or the North Sea. Winters are spent in warmer regions. Roald Amundsen has repeatedly crossed the Atlantic Ocean, bound for South American ports in Brazil and French Guiana (1998), for tall ships events in North America (2000, 2010), and for the Caribbean (2001, 2011/12, 2012/13). Further destinations include Iceland (1995), England and Ireland (2006), the Mediterranean (2006/07, 2007/08), the Canary Islands (1995), and others. During her North American voyage in 2010, Roald Amundsen visited the Great Lakes and there met with the US brig Niagara; the two brigs formed an unofficial friendship, and as of 2013, Roald Amundsen still flies a flag of Niagara at some occasions such as the Tall Ship Parade at Kiel Week. Another friendship, based on their respective crews on board for Kiel Week, has been formed with the German wooden schooner Amphitrite; both ships have established a tradition of berthing next to each other during the event.

The ship has participated in the Tall Ships' Races and is rated as a Class A tall ship by Sail Training International.

Canyonlands National Park is a U.S. National Park located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab.

The park preserves a colorful landscape eroded into numerous canyons, mesas, and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. The park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the combined rivers.

This image is made from 'the Island in the Sky' and you can see the meanders of the Green River.

The stage as a whole reminds me a lot of the series 'WestWorld' that's why I have titled it that way.

I hope you are all having a happy Sunday. Greetings. Wishing you a happy week ahead.

Castello del Trebbio was built in the twelfth century. It is surrounded by a 350 hectare estate (54 hectares of vineyards and 10,000 olive trees) and is bordered by native forest. Once owned by the Pazzi family, it was the scene of the attempted murder of the Medici brothers in 1478. The current family bought the estate in 1968 and have restored it to its respective architecture. The family currently lives in the castle.

(Continuation of a story I began with Portugal #1)

Marvin and I returned to Cascais to resume our respective lives. He did buy a condo in Portugal that he ultimately shared with a Portuguese woman. The man who had encouraged me to exercise my newly found freedoms in Morocco was actually someone who was drawn to traditional women. He continued to try to fulfill the endless bureaucratic requirements that were asked of him in order to gain permanent immigration in Portugal.

I moved closer to the center of town and to the sea. I continued to write and continued to be very critical. I wandered the little fishing village and visitors struck up conversations with me. One woman observed that it was difficult to think of me as a writer because I was so gregarious. I was beginning to agree.

As the fifth month of my stay in Cascais arrived, so did sad news from America. My mother’s health was declining. It was necessary for me to return home. Marvin and I had kept in touch and he offered to take me to the airport. I packed up all of my yellow legal tablets and my meager belongings.

In the back of my mind, the Orient was a plan and a dream. I missed Asia. Perhaps I would end up on the other side of the world after being with my mother.

This picture was taken more recently when I returned to Lisboa on a cruise ship. It is a landmark of Lisboa. The 25 de Abril Bridge on the Tagus River was built in 1966. It was built by the same construction company that built the San Francisco – Oakland bridge. They even used the same color of paint on both bridges.

On that return trip, I raced off of the cruise ship and hired a taxi to take me to Cascais. Twenty years had not changed the little town very much, but now it was called a boutique fishing village and was drawing a good number of visitors. They had added a large super market and that seemed to be the extent of the modernization. The taxi driver was thrilled to show me around and explain the changes. Was Marvin still there? Sadly, we had lost touch with each other over the years which happens so frequently in our hurried lives so I didn’t know the answer.

When I got back to the cruise ship, I saw the cruise director and the enrichment director who I had befriended. They asked about my activities for the day. I told them that I had taken a taxi to Cascais. They looked at me and warned that doing such a thing could be quite dangerous. I am certain that I looked at them with some distain when I told them that I used to live there. I’m not sure they comprehended as the American man who was in charge of enrichment lectures on board the ship for years had rarely gotten off the ship.

Listen, when things get a little too hot, sometimes you need to make a break for it... and break a few things in the process! Take it from the O.G. space cowboy himself.

The Big Sioux River forms a natural dividing line between South Dakota and Iowa, separating each other at their respective southeast and northwest borders. Following along the banks of the Big Sioux atop rail through the far edges of both states and tasked with hauling heavy amounts of aggregate, cement, grain and ethanol products through the areas' sprawling prairies, fertile farmland and quant small towns is class III shortline operation, the Dakota & Iowa, or DAIR for short. A wholly owned subsidiary of L.G. Everist, Inc, the railroad's biggest customer, the DAIR operates traffic on nearly 140 miles of track through the two states via several different BNSF lines, running trains down its main artery from Dell Rapids, SD in the north, location of company headquarters, to Sioux City, IA at the line's southern end, as well as a short branch that leaves the main at Hawarden, IA, extending west for Beresford, SD. The line for the DAIR was established in 1981 after the state of South Dakota subsequently purchased and leased much of the current track to pre-merger Burlington Northern, as well as then new shortline DAIR circa-1985, from a retrenched Milwaukee Road following there ultimate bankruptcy and later abandonment of the route, saving this little portion of the old, vast MILW system. The BNSF eventually purchased outright from the state their portion of the track(s) in 2005 while continuing to allow the DAIR to operate under trackage rights with the class 1 carrier on their Madison, Canton and Aberdeen Subdivisions. However, it wasn't until just recently, in the summer of 2020, that under an agreement between the SDDOT and DAIR, that the shortline railroad finally took full ownership of this section of the route from here in Canton, south, to Elk Point.

It's Monday morning, September 23rd, and the conductor, traveling via utility truck, has just lined and locked the wye switch back for the BNSF mainline from Sioux Falls behind this morning's "MDRSC" road freight as its engineer makes the turn back onto home rails, bringing his 49 car consist past the CHS grain bins in downtown Canton. Beneath the glass blue skies, a trio of immaculately kept six-axle EMD SD40-2s have on there drawbars today a block of 20 rock loads from the L.G. Everist pit in Dell Rapids, as well as 29 empty ethanol tanks at the rear, picked-up from the BNSF interchange at Sioux Falls to be set-out at the POET Bioprocessing facility a short distance away in Hudson. L.G. Everist, Inc. are owners of one of the largest privately owned fleets of railroad equipment to any aggregate producer in all of North America, and one can really appreciate the sheer size of their operations upon visit to this region. In season, the DAIR runs at least one train load of rock south to Sioux City for L.G. every Monday through Friday. The entire roster of Dakota & Iowa's locomotive fleet are kept very clean and even all of L.G.'s rolling stock are regularly washed, rid from any dirt and graffiti build-up, making for some very sharp looking trains that are much more presentable than most trash currently wandering the big class 1's today. It's a nice change to see a company that actually takes such pride and care of their equipment. I suppose when you're wholly owned by your largest customer, they want their equipment looking as such in the proper condition.

Clean EMDs, long and heavy freights, and a predictable schedule makes the DAIR a must visit as I certainly have the urge to go back and explore them deeper.

Later afternoon sun aided by Picasa2.

Reflect on today's Scripture: March 23, 2008, Easter Sunday: His Resurrection

Acts 10:34a, 37-43

Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23

Colossians 3:1-4

John 20:1-9

Easter has come suddenly, with a burst of light!

Now we know that Jesus stands by his promises! In a flash, Christ has changed darkness and death into light and life. Our journey through the struggles of Lent and the pain of Holy Week is over. With malicious sacrilege, evil has done its worst to the sacred body of God's Son. With Mary and John, we saw Him die. We wept at the tomb. Then, before dawn on Sunday, Christ broke through the rock, shattered the power of sin and, according to tradition, appeared first to His Mother, then to the women and the apostles.

As we listen to today's first reading, we hear one of Peter's very first sermons. The curious bystanders were astounded at the change in this man. He comes fresh from the fiery tongues of Pentecost, still in shock at the dream he had on the way to Cornelius' house. Nothing was to be considered unclean. So he is free to preach to Gentiles the Good News of God's forgiveness and freedom for all. Peter and the others are commanded to baptize any who believe in the Christ. So the word spreads through the whole countryside and beyond. Resurrection is the hope of every living person. No wonder the apostles preached with such courage and enthusiasm!

They preached about a God who cared first for people who were poor and powerless, a God whose love governed all His relationships. And He taught us to not only believe in justice, but to act justly.

The Scripture readings during these fifty days between Easter and Pentecost are among the most exciting in the Church year. We burst into "Alleluias" over and over, and joyfully shout "Christ has Risen" this Sunday. But more than just singing, we settle into a new time of reflection on our own program for resurrection in these very troubled times. After all, it is our mission to bring new life to a troubled world. If we don't do it, who will? So let's repack for travel!

As followers of the Risen Christ, the time has come for greater efforts on our part to influence politicians and others on all the vital life issues that are integral to the teaching of Jesus Christ—from abortion and embryonic stem-cell research to corruption in government and all institutions—to proper medical care for the sick and elderly. Jesus teaches respect for every human person, whether alien or citizen. We need to study the document of the Bishops on Faithful Citizenship. Hopefully, many of us will continue our Why Catholic groups. Faith and action begin with understanding and loving the teachings and plans for action of our Church. We have so much to do as hope-filled Easter Catholics. These are critical times, and we must not fall back into laziness or complacency now that Lent has ended.

Let's hope our spiritual blood-pressure is just a bit higher as we proclaim the Good News.

Christ is Risen, Alleluia!

Pope Urges Youth to Form Friendship With Christ, for this is Best Relationship Key for Responding to Modern World

VATICAN CITY, MARCH 19, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI greeted university students gathered for an annual conference sponsored by Opus Dei, and encouraged them to foster a personal relationship with Christ so as to be able to respond to the great questions of our time.

The Pope greeted in three languages the 3,000 participants of the international UNIV congress, gathered today in St. Peter's Basilica. He then gave the traditional catechesis during his weekly general audience in Paul VI Hall.

"I offer a cordial welcome to all of you who have come to Rome from various countries and universities to celebrate Holy Week together, and to take part in the International UNIV Congress," the Holy Father told the youth. "In this way, you will be able to benefit from moments of common prayer, cultural enrichment and a helpful exchange of the experiences gained from your association with the centers and activities of Christian formation sponsored by the Prelature of Opus Dei in your respective cities and nations."

The conference this year, which ends Easter Sunday, is focused on the theme "Being, Appearing, and Communicating: Entertainment and Happiness in a Multi-Medial Society."

The Pontiff reminded the youth that with a "serious personal commitment, inspired by the Gospel values, it is possible to respond adequately to the great questions of our time.'

"The Christian knows that there is an inseparable link between the truth, ethics and responsibility," he said. "Every authentic cultural expression contributes to form the conscience and encourage the person to better himself with the end of bettering society. In this way one feels responsible before the truth, at the service of which, one must put one's own personal liberty."

A commitment

Benedict XVI said this implies "a mission requiring commitment." And to fulfill this commitment, he affirmed, "the Christian is called to follow Jesus, cultivating an intense friendship with him through prayer and contemplation."

"To be friends of Christ, and to give testimony of him wherever we are, demands, furthermore, the strength to go against the grain, remembering the words of the Lord: You are in the world but not of the world," he added.

The Pope encouraged the youth: "Do not be afraid, then, to be nonconformists when it is necessary; at your university, school and in all places."

"Dear young people of UNIV, be leaven of hope in the world that desires to meet Jesus, often without knowing it," he urged. "To better the world, make an effort above all to change yourselves through an intense sacramental life, especially through approaching the sacrament of penance, and participating assiduously in the celebration of the Eucharist."

The UNIV conferences began in 1968, inspired and encouraged by Opus Dei's founder, Monsignor Josemaría Escrivá, who was canonized in 2002.

There are literally several thousand distinct asbestos products and respective applications collectively known as "asbestos products"; this image depicts but a single brand and one type of an often overlooked asbestos material: packing.

There are a few other applications for packing materials, however asbestos packing was most commonly used for creating internal seals around industrial pump shafts and pipe valve stems. As much as 1/2-pound (or more) of asbestos packing could be installed inside each larger pump or pipe valve housing (stuffing box) and packings are oftentimes not even considered during asbestos surveys or exposure assessments primarily due to their inherent concealment.

Essentially a rather durable rope-like material, asbestos packings can range considerably in thickness and construction (e.g.- braided, twisted, rubber/metal composite, round, square, etc.). Most packings are typically handled by dry cutting with saws or serrated knives and are usually crudely extracted from mechanical parts by picking the asbestos material apart piece-by-piece with simple corkscrew-type/hook implements, which creates potential conditions for airborne asbestos exposure.

Canyonlands National Park is a U.S. National Park located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab. It preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas, and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries.

The park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the combined rivers—the Green and Colorado—which carved two large canyons into the Colorado Plateau. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character.

This is what the Earth Cafe typically looked like when I first arrived in the morning: dark and empty and closed. Inside the cafe, the chairs are turned upside-down on their respective tables.

During the second week that I visited the cafe, it was so cold that the staff had actually placed all of the outside tables and chairs inside the cafe -- so the outer area was completely bare when I arrived.

This photo was taken at 47 seconds past the hour of 7 AM,so the cafe should have been open for business. But it clearly was not ...and I found that it was usually a good idea to wait until at least 7:15 before walking inside. Even then, the croissants and pastries were typically not ready; so I had to satisfy myself with an initial cappuccino and then come back 15 minutes later in hopes of getting a warm, tasty croissant.

**********************

As I’ve mentioned in a couple of recent Tumblr blog postings, I’m working on an exercise for a new class that I’ve started taking at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in the fall of 2015.( You can see the earlier Tumblr postings here. and here.).

In addition to taking a bunch of photos (see the other Tumblr postings for details and descriptions of what the photos are supposed to illustrate), we also have the task of editing our images down to a maximum of 10 “presentation images” that we will share with the ICP class next week. When our instructor, Joanne Dugan, asked me last week if I anticipated having any problems with this aspect of the assignment, I shrugged and said, “No, I do this all the time …”

Well, yes and no: I do do a lot of editing/winnowing of my photos before deciding which ones should be shared with anyone else. But I had forgotten that I also do a lot of cropping, color-adjustment, tweaking, and general post-processing before I upload my photos to Flickr, Facebook, or even Instagram. For this particular ICP exercise, we were also told not to crop the photos, and not to do any post-processing. That makes things a lot more difficult …

On the other hand, part of the exercise is to assemble and share a maximum of ten photos that collectively tell a “story” of some kind – and to “tell” that story with anywhere from a word, to a sentence, to a paragraph for each of the photos. That makes things a lot easier … after all, if a photo has to be presented in isolation, then it truly stands alone. And it is intended to be viewed without any accompanying text, then it really stands alone. There’s nothing wrong with that; indeed, one might argue that that’s the whole point of photography: a picture should “tell” a story all by itself, without any extraneous verbiage to “explain” what might not be obvious to the viewer.

But not very many things exist in complete isolation of the rest of the universe, especially in today’s interconnected world. I suppose some people would debate that point quite vigorously; and some people might argue that a photograph of a person, place, or thing should be able to “stand alone” without anything else. I certainly have seen photos that fall into this category, and I suppose I’ve taken a few like that, too. Or, maybe if I never intended my photos to be considered in complete isolation from one another, perhaps that’s how some people prefer to look at them …

But for me, that’s a pretty rare phenomenon. Almost always, I find myself telling a story. The photographs obviously present one “dimension” of the story, in a visual form; and I’ve been trying to remind myself lately that videos can present can present one, and sometimes two, additional dimensions (motion and sound) that can add enormously to the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of the underlying story.

But even if one uses only traditional photos, I find that it’s almost impossible for me to crate (or make, or take) one photo by itself; invariably, I take dozens, if not hundreds or even thousands, which collectively tell a story. It may be a story about someplace I’ve been, or some event in which I’ve participated, or some individual (or group of individuals) that I want the viewer to know and appreciate in more detail than would be possible to communicate in a single photo.

And then there are the words … maybe it’s because I spend part of my time as a writer and teacher that I find it almost impossible not to augment my photos with words. Lots of words. Indeed, sometimes far too many words; and sometimes clumsy words, or the wrong words. And I do realize that there are times when the situation would be improved if I would just shut up, and let the photograph do all of the communication. But for better or worse, I guess I’m a photojournalist.

With that in mind, I began the process of editing the photos for my recent ICP assignment. Here’s what I found:

1. It’s not as easy as one might think, when you start with a large number. I began winnowing the original images when I had 2,700 (after 9 days of shooting), and I still had 5 days of shooting left).

2. It’s much more difficult than I had imagined, given the constraints of my ICP class: no cropping, no post-processing, and a maximum of only 10 images. I’ve worked within those constraints for the final images that I’m submitting to the ICP class; but for these Flickr uploads, I’ve ended up with 40-45 images – and they have been heavily cropped, tilted, color-corrected, noise-dusted, and tweaked in various other ways. C’est la vie…

3. Using the collection of photos to “tell a story” is both easier and harder than I thought it would be. I’m including these background notes in all of the photos that get uploaded to Flickr … because I’ve learned (form past experience) that some visitor will zoom in on just one particular photo, without necessarily looking at all of them, and/or without seeing the overall notes for the entire album. And I don’t think I’ll find it difficult to write a few sentences to provide the background details for each photo … but whether they “flow” and create one overall, coherent “story” remains to be seen.

4. Aside from a narrative “story,” there are some “themes” that I noticed throughout this entire two-week exercise. The most significant one was exactly what I had anticipated: patterns. If you are lucky enough to sit in the same spot at the same time, day after day, you see the same rhythms, the same people, the same repetitions of life’s little actions and emotions. Many people have the opportunity to see these patterns, because they do follow the same schedule, day after day, on their way to their job or their school. But some of us have irregular routines, and any, most of us don’t pay any attention. If you slow down, and pay attention, you’ll see the patterns.

But sometimes the pattern involves uniqueness – i.e. strange and unusual people or events that seem to happen only once. But I have to keep reminding myself that my visits have lasted only two weeks; if I was here for a month, or a full season, or perhaps an entire year – then perhaps I would see these strange incidents repeating themselves

5. Another theme – which I did not anticipate, but was delighted to see – was the pervasive sense of affection and caring between and among everyone on the street. Mostly it was apparent in the interactions between parents and children; but sometimes it was between dog-owners and the dogs they were walking; sometimes it was between friends who happened to be walking along together; and sometimes it was between complete strangers and me, as the strangers would smile and nod and say “hello” if they noticed I was watching them. It was a great experience.

The Big Picture (aka My Wallpaper)

The Japanese Tower and the Chinese House are located on the estate of the Belgian Royal Residence. They were erected at the behest of King Leopold II for the occasion of the 1900 World's Fair of Paris. The two buildings are constructed in the monumental styles of their respective countries of origin. The structural work was performed by European architects and builders; the decoration was executed by Japanese and Chinese specialists. They have been open to the public since 1913. In 1946 collections of fine Japanese and Chinese pottery and furniture were added to augment the buildings' architectural and decorative appeal.

Rounding off their respective railtours in the south west, Ex-LMS Rebuilt 'Royal Scot' Class - 46100 "Royal Scot" double headed with BR Standard 'Britannia' Class 7MT - 70000 "Britannia" to work Saphos Trains' 'Devonian Express'.

The railtour started out of Cardiff Central, with BR Class 47 - D1935 "Roger Hosking MA 1925 - 2013" at the helm. D1935 would work the tour as far as Bristol Temple Meads, where a reversal saw 46100 & 70000 take control for the charge south west to Plymouth. The pair would work the return leg back as far as Bristol too, before D1935 regained the reins for the return to Cardiff Central.

Castello del Trebbio was built in the twelfth century. It is surrounded by a 350 hectare estate (54 hectares of vineyards and 10,000 olive trees) and is bordered by native forest. Once owned by the Pazzi family, it was the scene of the plotting of the attempted murder of the Medici brothers in 1478. The name Pazzi was used in the film Hannibal (2001). The fictional character was Chief Inspector Rinaldo Pazzi played by Giancarlo Giannini

The current family bought the estate in 1968 and have restored it to its respective architecture. The family currently lives in the castle.

Though not as prevalent as graffiti placed by counter culture warriors, this gang tag is not lonely, as there are many gang tags interspersed with the anti-establishment and socialist expressions. This tag stands out as a gang tag, however, because it was placed out in the open on the base of a light pole along Jefferson Street near the east entrance of the tunnel. The gang tags tend to stick out, because they are meant to serve as visual markers of territory for respective gangs, similar to a dog marking territory with urine.

“A.I. - About Apple’s Identity”

### Will Apple Listen to Mark Zuckerberg’s Criticism?

I Don’t Think So—At Least Not for Someone Enchanted by the Apple Vision Pro.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently appeared on a well-known podcast, where he criticized Apple for failing to release an innovative product since the iPhone and for experiencing a decline in sales.

Appearing on a podcast originating from Apple and then proceeding to criticize the company might seem like a lighthearted joke, but I believe he was serious.

Why? Because he now wields a weapon—the AR glasses.

With the support of various institutions and a team of highly skilled professionals, he has likely achieved some notable milestones. Yet, as someone who has been a devoted Apple user since the PowerBook 540c, I still do not sense any real craftsmanship or identity in what he creates.

This sentiment extends to other IT giants that currently dominate the world—Meta, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, and Google.

Just by listing their names, readers of this text are likely already picturing their respective CEOs.

In the past, I wrote that Steve Jobs was not an artist.

What he excelled at was weaving together scattered ideas from across the world, expanding upon them, and linking them to the future.

The true creator was Jonathan Ive.

A minority of people may share this perspective with me.

However, when I see these IT moguls quickly shifting their corporate stances the moment the possibility of Trump returning to power emerges, I feel compelled to speak my mind.

The AR glasses, the cars—everything they create lacks a fundamental concept.

Call it ideology or, in lighter terms, identity.

It is true that Tim Cook and Apple’s current team have become more prone to letting slip details about upcoming products before their official release.

I have always loved music.

Artists shut themselves in a studio, cutting off the outside world, pouring their anger, hatred, joy, and sorrow into each note with intense focus.

It’s as if they are entrusting something to their music.

And when they finally release their album, they explain the emotions and thoughts behind its creation.

(Prince, whom I admire, rarely spoke about his work, so understanding his art required engaging with the final product itself.)

Until an album is complete and released, artists say nothing.

It was those artists who moved me to my core.

The faint glow of Apple’s innovation still remains within me.

Not even last year’s widely criticized "failure"—the Apple Vision Pro—could extinguish it.

In fact, it shines even brighter than the iPhone.

Because beyond its cutting-edge electronic components, I can sense a concept, an ideology.

Unfortunately, I will never feel the same from Meta’s AR glasses or Tesla’s cars.

I have written at length, but here is the key article:

**Tim Cook Donates Over $1.5 Million to Trump’s Inauguration Ceremony**

🔗 [Gigazine Article](gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...)

At first glance, this might make it seem like Tim Cook, like other tech CEOs, has sold his soul. But that is not the case.

While Cook personally donated to Trump, Apple itself did not follow the same path as other companies.

Apple refused to bow to Trump.

If asked what Apple’s ideology truly is, I would answer this:

**Apple is a group of individuals who believe in themselves.**

Steve Jobs, watching from heaven, is probably chuckling at this overly serious text I wrote.

A company that does not pander to Trump—

That is Apple. :)

### January 15

After reading a heartwarming article.

8mm film of our honeymoon resurrected after decades.

youtu.be/zH-dG7bMeL4?si=yLF5_f1m-LhAVdPp

We found the 8mm film of our honeymoon for the first time in decades, and burned it onto a DVD.

On June 6, 1993, we got married, and headed straight to Nassau, Bahamas, via New York.

Our destination was the pink sand beach where the late Princess Diana went on her honeymoon.

If you're heading to the Bahamas, this might be a good reference.

The hotel we stayed at was the Ramada Hotel, which no longer exists.

My wife is showing us the hotel room.

But now you can see the beautiful scenery in real time.

When I played the DVD that arrived, it showed footage of our arrival in the Bahamas.

Please take a look if you'd like.

This time, we asked Fujifilm to make the DVD.

I'll post the link below.

Main story

There are two reasons why a person faces the sea.

One to enjoy a slice of shine in the sea like children bubbling over in the beach.

The other to brush the dust of memory like an old man who misses old days staring at the shine

quietly.

Those lead to only one meaning though they do not seem to overlap. It’s a rebirth.

I face myself to change tomorrow a vague day into something certain.

That is the meaning of a rebirth.

I had a very sweet girlfriend when I was 18.

After she left I knew the meaning of gentleness for the first time and also a true pain of loss. After

she left # how many times did I depend too much on her # doubt her # envy her and keep on telling lies

until I realized it is love?

I wonder whether a nobody like me could have given something to her who was struggling in the

daily life in those days. Giving something is arrogant conceit. It is nothing but self-satisfaction.

I had been thinking about such a thing.

However I guess what she saw in me was because I had nothing. That‘s why she tried to see

something in me. Perhaps she found a slight possibility in me # a guy filled with ambiguous unstable

tomorrow. But I wasted days depending too much on her gentleness.

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

My Novel : Unforgettable'

(This book is Dedicated to the future artist.)

Kei Kitami, a student preparing for university entrance exams, meets Kaori Kamimura, an event companion six years his senior, through social media.

Kaori has come to Tokyo with a dream—to befriend famous artists.

To achieve this, she needs the influence of Ryo Osawa, a well-known radio producer.

During a live radio broadcast, Osawa speaks directly to Kaori:

*"I have a wife and child. But still, I want to see you."*

Meanwhile, Rika Sanjo, Kei’s classmate who secretly harbors feelings for him, is closely watching Kaori’s every move...

Now I finally can convey how I felt in those days when we met.

www.flickr.com/photos/stealaway/54271473379/in/dateposted...

gigazine.net/news/20250104-apple-ceo-tim-cook-donates-1-m...

Preah Ko (The Sacred Bull) was the first temple to be built in the ancient and now defunct city of Hariharalaya (in the area that today is called Roluos), some 15 kilometers south-east of the main group of temples at Angkor, Cambodia. The temple was built under the Khmer King Indravarman I in 879 to honor members of the king's family, whom it places in relation with the Hindu deity Shiva.

Preah Ko (Sacred Bull) derives its name from the three statues of sandstone located in the front of and facing the temple's central towers. These statues represent Nandi, the white bull who serves as the mount of Shiva.

Preah Ko consists of six brick towers arranged in two rows of three towers each perched on a sandstone platform. The towers face east, and the front central tower is the tallest. The sanctuaries are dedicated to three divinized forefathers of Indravarman and their respective wives. The front central tower is dedicated to Jayavarman II, the founder of the Khmer empire. The tower to the left is dedicated to Prithivindreshvara, King Indravarman's father; the tower to the right to Rudreshvara, his grandfather. The three rear towers are dedicated to the wives of these three men. The central towers all bear images of the Hindu god Shiva.

So I know I'm pretty late to the party, but man, the holiday's are hard to schedule around! I'm finally getting back into my groove, and what a great way to really start off my 2017, than with this fantastic figure!

Myles has done it again, bringing us probably one of, if not the most sorely lacking versions of Green Arrow in the Lego community! It's amazing that no one has jumped on printing a Bronze Age/Neal Adams GA until now! Seriously, if you haven't already, go buy this fig! CyclopsBricks are selling a couple color variants of this fig (Bright/Dark Green) and almost immediately they've both been prepped for many projects to come! It's a good price for a fig, great quality PAD Printing ...yeah this sounds like an ad or something... (They didn't pay me to do this!) :P

(To tell you the truth though, the Dark Green fig is sold with a hood, and the bright green is sold with the cap. I combined the two for the sake of artistic integrity, but I figured I should probably point it out so no one gets upset :P)

Anyway, this alley build was a pretty quick set up with just a bunch of greebling, nothing fancy. It's kinda inspired a teeny tiny bit by my love for Phil Hester's and Bruce Timm's re-design's of the character and their respective Star City's!

Patreon has a few more images of the build if you wanna check those out, plus an alternate take of this image as well!

Yeah geez, all I want now is a Black Canary to accompany him! You hear that Myles? Get on it! :P

ps. GO BUY THIS FIG SO THEY CAN MAKE MORE FIGS! I don't think I could stress that enough :P

US Route 66 was designated in 1927; by 1929 Kansas and Illinois were the first to completely pave their respective segments of this highway.

Little's Service Station installed its fuel pumps on the former site of the Banks Hotel (demolished 1933) at 119 North Main Street in Galena; an automobile repair shop was added later. Before Interstate 44 opened in the area in 1961, bypassing Kansas entirely, US Route 66 in Kansas was a vibrant part of the "Mother Road" which led from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California.

In 1979, US 66 in Galena was taken off its former Main Street alignment (which came in from Missouri as Front Street, turned south on Main Street, then followed the current K-66 route to Riverton) and routed directly onto 7th Street, bypassing the station. US 66 would become Kansas State Route 66 in 1985, but the station sat vacant, closed and largely abandoned until its 2007 restoration.

Restoration

The Kan-O-Tex Service Station bears the branding of the former Kanotex Refining Company (1909-1953), a now-defunct regional fuel brand named for Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The Kan-O-Tex logo was a Kansas sunflower behind a five-point star.

The station is home to a 1951 International boom truck on which Pixar's animated character Tow Mater was based; Joe Ranft, a Pixar animator, discovered it during a research trip for the movie Cars. In April 2011, a Disney/Pixar crew returned to interview the station's owners for a DVD release of Cars 2. As the "Mater" name is a Disney trademark, the original truck has been named "Tater."

The station was restored in 2007 and renamed 4 Women on the Route. Following an ownership change and the death of one of the founders of 4 Women on the Route, it was renamed again, becoming Cars on the Route, to emphasize its connection with Cars. Located seven blocks north of the current (7th Street) Kansas Route 66, the station retains the original aesthetic design of the fuel pumps and exterior façade but places a diner-style lunch counter in what once would have been the service bay of the station's repair garage. It operates seasonally, closing for the winter and reopening in the spring. (Wikipedia)

On this day at this station you'll see "RED" a Chevrolet Spartan 80 fire truck built by Howe, International customized tow truck and a 1951 International boom truck.

KCS 3929 leads the CP 473 out of Bensenville Yard in spectacular golden light. This was the second train today to have a KCS SD70MAC leading, and on respective trains too. We had planned to shoot this at Wood Dale past the searchlights but shadows were coming in quick and we made a quick maneuver down here. Boy am I glad we did. And not to mention, we ran into 2 CP police officers throughout the day including here. Both of them were shockingly nice compared to what I've heard about them. Overall, a great day to be up here. 1/16/16

A former Conrail SD80MAC is the lead unit for NS train 297 moving past Tower 2 at Old Union Depot Interlocking on Track 79 of the KCT North-South Corridor with autoracks bound for UP's Armourdale Yard. Before UP adopted PSR and Armourdale still handled automotive traffic, NS ran about two daily, or at least almost daily, autorack trains over there. 297 and 239 both interchanged with the UP at Armourdale, while 33J, a manifest, ran to 18th St. Yard.

EMD's SD80MAC acheived 5,000 HP from a 20 cylinder 710G prime mover. Only 30 SD80MACs were ever built, with two being demonstrator units. The remaining 28 were production units all purchased by Conrail. This SD80MAC, NS No. 7219, was originally built as CR No. 4107 in 3/1996, and it was one of the 28 production units. When Conrail was split between NS and CSX in 1999, NS got 17 of these units and CSX got the remaining 13. The 4107 went to CSX and became CSXT No. 802, and then later repainted and renumbered to CSXT No. 4592. It was announced in 2014 that all the SD80MACs on CSX's roster would be traded to NS for 23 SD40-2s, and this deal was complete in March of 2015. A month, they were delivered to NS, and this one, the NS No. 7219, was painted into NS colors in May of 2015.

The NS No. 7219 is razor blades, now. In February of 2020, just about two years after I took this photo, NS retired its entire remaining fleet of 29 SD80MAC's. Six were sold to CP for use as parts sources for SD70ACU rebuilds, while the rest were sold to Progress Rail and later scrapped.

As for the trailing units, the NS SD70M-2 No. 2710 was sold to Progress Rail in 2021. The SD70M-2's, which were once very common on the NS, are basically a rarity now, as only 46 remain on the roster, yet currently stored. The KCS and UP units are still active are working system wide on their respective roads. 1/28/18.

The original photo is taken from Google.com,

According to Telegraph & Argus, it was announced that THE Metro branding that had been in place on West Yorkshire's public transport network for over 50 years was retired. West Yorkshire bus brands including Arriva Yorkshire and First West Yorkshire would soon be run by West Yorkshire Combined Authority after a decision to operate a franchising system was made by Mayor Tracy Brabin last year.

On the other hand, First Halifax, Calder Valley & Huddersfield is an amalgamation of the First Halifax and First Huddersfield operations, running services in their respective towns as well as the Calder Valley region. HX Connect and the Olympia-Hybrid Urban livery were replaced by the new FirstGroup (Ultraviolet) corporate livery, with the pre-existing fleet already starting to wear this new livery.

The respective liveries of BR Corporate Blue, Inter City Swallow and Virgin Trains are all represented at Stone on 28th June 2002 as Class 86/2 No. 86253 'The Manchester Guardian' heads Class 47/8 No. 47840 'North Star' over Stone Junction with Table 51 service 1V97 1710 Manchester Piccadilly - London Paddington.
