This is a giant sequoia that fell more than 300 years ago. Giant sequoias are resistant to decay, so their remains can linger for a long period of time if undisturbed. The remaining root system is about 5-6m high.

It is found in the Mariposa Grove, located near Wawona, CA., in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park. It is the largest grove of giant sequoias in the park, with several hundred mature examples of the tree. Two of its trees are among the 30 largest giant sequoias in the world.

The Mariposa Grove was first visited by non-natives in 1857 when Galen Clark and Milton Mann found it. They named the grove after Mariposa County, CA., where the grove is located.

One of the giant sequoias, named Grizzly Giant, is between probably 1,900-2,400 years old, making it the oldest tree in the grove. Abraham Lincoln signed an Act of Congress on 30 June 1864, ceding Mariposa Grove and Yosemite Valley to the state of California. Criticism of stewardship over the land led to the state's returning the grove to federal control with the establishment of Yosemite National Park.

"This image shows a CCN-51 (Colección Castro Naranjal 51) cacao pod growing on a Theobroma cacao tree.

CCN-51 is a high-yielding, disease-resistant variety of cacao developed in Ecuador in the 1960s.

It is widely cultivated and known for its productivity, often yielding two to three times the typical harvest of traditional varieties.

The CCN-51 variety is a hybrid cross involving Iquitos, LAN 21 Criollo, and Amelonado genetic groups.

It is commonly used in the commodity chocolate industry due to its robust nature. "

www.thechocolatejournalist.com/blog/good-bad-ugly-cacao-c...

The characteristics of CCN-51 appeal to those that prioritize productivity. This is in fact a high yield kind of cacao that can grow in full sun and is resistant to fungal diseases. It produces four times more than fine flavor varieties. A real cacao machine! But it's not gold all that shines. CCN-51 is also known for its mediocre, if not awful flavor that chocolate expert Ed Seguine defines as “acidic dirt”. In a more polite way, top craft chocolate reviewer C-Spot emphasizes the lack of a "flavorful rainbow" in any new and improved varieties of CCN-51.

Presented as the solution to a potential cocoa shortage, this kind of cacao is dreaded by fine palates. But what is dreaded by fine palates is often a matter of survival for farmers. The high-productivity of CCN-51 can be a blessing for cocoa farmers that are dealing with wages below the poverty line.

We can now understand why CCN-51 unleashes a wide range of emotions among chocolate professionals. Opinions are different and vary based on expertise and specific positions in the supply chain. Here are the biggest topics of such tangled debate.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobroma_cacao

Theobroma cacao (cacao tree or cocoa tree) is a small (6–12 m (20–39 ft) tall) evergreen tree in the Malvaceae family.[1][3] Its seeds—cocoa beans—are used to make chocolate liquor, cocoa solids, cocoa butter and chocolate.[4] Although the tree is native to the tropics of the Americas, the largest producer of cocoa beans in 2022 was Ivory Coast.

Our second stop was at Waimea Valley Botanical Garden.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waimea_Valley

Waimea Valley is an area of historic cultural significance on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The valley, being an important place in Hawaiian religion, includes several historical structures including stone terraces and walls constructed during the time of the Hawaiian monarchy. The nutrient-rich volcanic soil combined with a rainy environment provided the resourceful Hawaiians of the area the opportunity to create one of the most prosperous farming communities in all of Polynesia. The area had complex fish ponds, domesticated animal pens, various large farming beds, and was famous for the cultivation of pink taro root stock, a coveted item to the Ali`i (the Hawaiian elite).[1][2] Much of the garden floor was once cultivated for taro, sweet potato, and bananas, with new crops and orchards introduced by Europeans after their arrival.

Formerly known as the Waimea Valley Audubon Center and the Waimea Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Waimea Valley is a historical nature park including botanical gardens. It is located at 59-864 Kamehameha Highway, Haleiwa, Oahu, Hawaii and is open daily except for Christmas and New Year's Day; an admission fee is charged.

Communicating thoughts of ways

To never have to speak again

Let me be the fire in your head

Bring what's yours, I'll take what's mine

And meet you on the other side

We'll leave a sign so anyone can find us

A better place, a sweeter time

We won't need any wings to fly

A place beyond the sun

Look for me

The way you would if you were blind

Don't be so resistant

I've been known

To travel much too fast

Is that you in the distance?

Athena assembly building. This building it is seriously hardened. For example, the small semidetached structure bottom right with the word "Rook" scrawled on it has a four inch thick steel blast door and the walls and roof are well over a foot thick and made of reinforced concrete. That part seems to have been some sort of control area with tons of cables running from there into the larger structure.

This building is located just below the water tower and next to the Uranium Disposal Cell shown in the previous two frames.

The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone is the official tester of bear-resistant containers in Yellowstone. Since the containers are getting better, the GWDC sometimes gives the bears an easy one - so they try for the food reward. The good folks brought out one of the easy coolers for our crew to film for an online course we're developing.

The GWDC is a great, AZA-accredited facility that should be part of your Yellowstone visit.

The second impostor is the white acacia, or Robinia pseudoacacia (Robinia pseudoacacia), which is completely non–native for Russia, also, like the silver acacia, from ponaekh, only not from Australia, but from North America. More than four hundred years ago it was brought to Europe and from there it has already reached the southern part of Russia, where it settled down. For the most part, it is located south of the Kursk-Voronezh-Saratov line, but it is moving north. Individuals have been spotted in St. Petersburg.

It is the white acacia that is sung in the story of A.I. Kuprin, the operetta of I.O. Dunaevsky with the subsequent film adaptation. And also in the wonderful romance "White acacia clusters fragrant" in several versions. After standing near a flowering tree, it becomes clear why creative people were so inspired by it. The fragrance is really magical. And I don't want to leave. And something romantic starts to start in my head.

But still, she is not an acacia, so, distant (geographically and genetically) relatives in the legume family.

Robinia is a fairly large tree, up to 30 meters can grow, fast–growing and with a powerful root system. It is prone to the formation of overgrowth. Blooms already at the age of six. It is not demanding of soils, like many legumes, it gets nitrogen fixers on its roots, it has enough.

It is used not only in decorative and park gardening, but also, due to its valuable characteristics (unpretentiousness to soils, wind resistance, a powerful root system and rapid growth), it is widely used as forest protection strips in steppe zones, to strengthen the slopes of ravines, railway slopes.

In decorative gardening, like karagana, it is used as a solitary plant and for hedges, because it tolerates shearing well and grows thickly. Flowers, bark, leaves and shoots have medicinal properties, and as a honey plant robinia is above all praise. Honey from the nectar of its flowers is hypoallergenic, transparent greenish in color and does not crystallize during the year.

Fyero was a little annoyed with me today; I had to go back to work after spending so much time at home with her.

So when I came home and started pestering her with the camera she was a little peeved and tried to ignore me.

I persisted and ended up with a decent shot of her, so it's a win for me and I fed her dinner a little early so she wins too!

Hope everyone has had a good day.

The "Dom Fernando II e Gloria", the last sailing ship to serve in the Portuguese Navy and the last man of war on the "India Run", a regular military route that linked Portugal to that former colony during more than three centuries. She was the last tall ship of the Navy to be built at the Royal Navy Shipyards in Damao (India).

The first-rate Teak of the forests of Nagar-Avell, considered to be the most resistant and the best quality was used in her construction. She was launched in 1843 and towed to Goa to set the masts and to be fitted out as a full-rigged vessel.

The frigate was christened D. Fernando II e Gloria as a tribute to D. Fernando Saxe Coburgo-Gotha, husband of Queen Maria II of Portugal, and as a tribute to the Queen named Maria da Gloria.

During thirty years she sailed over 100.000 nautical miles, which correspond to five turns around the world. Her armament consisted of 44 guns. The crew varied, depending on the mission to be undertaken, from a minimum of 145 to a maximum of 379 men.

In 1963 the "Dom Fernando" was seriously damaged by a fire, having remained stuck in the river Tagus until 1992, when she underwent restoration in the "Ria Marine" shipyard, in Aveiro. In 1997 the Frigate returned to Lisbon to complete restoration works and realized the final fitting out and rigging on the vessel, including masts, rigging and sails at Alfeite Arsenal, in addition to fitting her out as a museum. In April 1998 she was delivered to the Navy as an auxiliary unit and opened to the public at EXPO 98.

The Explosive Resistant Armored Transport or ERAT is the latest in Titan Industries line of Security Vehicles.

After the slew of IEDs and other explosive ordinance that King International encountered on the Mexican border it was clear that a switch had to be made to a vehicle that was better equipped to protect their operatives in the combat area. Titan Industries answer to this call was the ERAT. Fitted with all manner of counter explosive measures and heavy armor, the ERAT is more than capable of surviving even the most testing combat situations.

The Oshkosh Defense Mine Resistant Ambush Protected All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) is a utility vehicle in service with the US Armed Forces and numerous other counties worldwide. Intended as a replacement for the Humvee in frontline combat roles, it entered service in 2009. The ‘Matvee’ was designed to provide the same levels of protection as larger and heavier MRAPs types, but with improved mobility, a job it accomplished extremely well in the mountains of Afghanistan and deserts of Iraq, Syria, and the Horn of Africa. However, it is still a large and relatively heavy vehicle, and is currently being supplanted in all US military branches with Oshkosh's L-ATV, which won the DoD's Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) competition.

Samples of the Biofilms experiment are headed to the International Space Station on the SpaceX CR23 cargo resupply mission this weekend to help maintain astronaut and material safety in space.

A common piece of advice of the past 18 months has been to make sure you wash your hands thoroughly. This is because microorganisms are easily spread across common surfaces like door handles and light switches, and it is no less true in space. The Space Station is, after all, a lab as well as a home to astronauts. It is especially important to keep this environment safe for the long-term health of astronauts and equipment on board.

Funded by ESA and developed by the Chair of Functional Materials at Saarland University and the Working Group for Aerospace Microbiology at German Aerospace Center DLR, Biofilms will test the antimicrobial properties of laser-structured metal surfaces such as steel, copper and brass under microgravity conditions.

But what is biofilm? When growing on surfaces, bacteria can ooze a mixture of microbial structures such as proteins and lipids. The biofilm is what makes microbes resistant to antibiotics and disinfectants. Left to grow, biofilm can be hard to clean and can erode surfaces, especially metals.

To combat microbial growth, Biofilms will test the growth of bacteria such as human skin-associated bacteria Staphylococcus capitis with a novel approach. The innovation of the experiment lies in the structured surfaces of common metals. Using Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) to add texture to the surfaces, researchers will study how well microbes grow (or not) on copper, metal and steel. Findings could help prevent microbial contamination in space.

Researchers performed a dry run of the experiment on Earth and all parameters, including hardware provided by Keyser Italia, checked out. The experiment will soon take center stage in space, where 24 experiment cultures will grow in the European Columbus module of the Space Station.

This view of plants among stone covered ground is one of many photos I took of the extensive cactus garden along West Field Road north of the terminals at San Francisco International Airport when Melody and I went to the Post Office there. I am always amazed at the drought resistant landscaping along W Field Road. Actually, the airport is similarly landscaped throughout the roadways and buildings at the airport. I shot this while taking about a 15 minute walk up and down the road before we headed back home. I shot this using my Canon Powershot SX50.
