Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is composed of resistant red sandstone beds, formed from deposited silt and desert dunes and cemented by infiltrated carbonates. The rocks are intensely colored by red iron oxide and other minerals, particularly bluish manganese.

This creates incredibly beautiful structures and hues. The most famous formation is The Wave in Coyote Buttes North. However, there are countless lesser-known spots with enough hoodos, arches, slot canyons, and brain rock formations to keep a photographer busy for a lifetime.

Paired with extremely dark skies, the area is a landscape astrophotography paradise, and since my first visit, in 2016, I have been waiting for my chance to return. In MayI plannec to spend one week in the area. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate, but at least I got one partially clear night.

This image, showing amazing layers of reddish rocks in front of some white brainrock formations beneath a perfect Milky Way, is one of my favorite compositions from that night.

Someone should say that the Saxon forest is not resistant (at least if it is a naturally grown forest and not a plantation).

Here from the top of the mount Heringskegel in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains we see a mixed forest (well ok a grove) of birch and pine trees that has formed on bare rock and is just being beautifully lit by the rising sun.

There is hardly any water and hardly any soil here and it is completely at the mercy of the weather. And yet it seems to me quite robust and healthy.

Even more, in this light it looks like a little paradise to me. The only thing that would be missing now would be a few colorful exotic birds circling around the summit, screeching loudly. Or maybe pterosaurs or dragons, depending on your imagination.

Close up of a damaged texture of the artwork 'Houseball' by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen in Berlin. They tried to set this on fire. Fortunately, the artwork was quite fire resistant.

And yes, it's double: on the one hand, the texture has become a bit more interesting, but on the other hand it is an indictment to vandalism.

Heat-resistant silicone tongs. I originally planned to submit a photo of the tool with a piece of dry pasta in its grip, but I worried the up-front placement might not be by the rules, so I went with an open claw instead.

Nature's spiral secret, unfolding in a dance of green and white. An Aloe aristata, commonly known as the "Lace Aloe" or "Guinea-Fowl Aloe." This succulent is recognized by its rosette shape, spiky edges, and white spots on dark green leaves.

After a two hour boat ride in a fog bank EVERYTHING was covered in water droplets, including my camera and everyone on board. The manufacturer’s claim that it (the camera) is water resistant (thankfully) proved true.

Shell Falls in Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming plunges for 120 feet above PreCambrian Granite. During the summer, water drops over Shell Falls at a rate of 3,600 gallons per second. The Creek and Falls follows fractures in the resistant granite. The creek and canyon were named for the shell fossils found in the sedimentary canyon walls above the granite.

Broom flowers make a wonderful splash of colour from Springtime and when the flowers are finished they have nice seed pods that eventually turn black and in late summer these seed pods which look like ‘pea pods’ burst open and if you are standing near them you can actually hear the pop. I am not sure that all varieties of Broom are resistant to fire but those that are, you will find that the fire only destroys the growth that is above ground but given time this plant with start to grow again from its roots which were protected below ground and it is also a good place for the germination of stored seeds in the soil to start to grow.

I’m so happy for the way this portrait turned out. I rarely take photos of people but I’ve been waiting to take one like this for quite some time. This gentleman hasn’t shaved nor cut his hair since March, 2020.

Well last night was a bit of a disaster:-

Heavy rain and high winds resulted in a "power cut" as I was cooking the evening meal for my 95 year old mother in law.

So out with the torches and the camping stove.

NOW you should NOT put a gas camping stove too close to an electric toaster!

Working by torch light means that only one spot is illuminated at a time, so while retrieving some ingredients (pepper) from the cupboard I noticed an odd yellow flicker out of the corner of my eye. I should have turned round more quickly - but no I got the pepper out of the cupboard before turning round.

Burning plastic is harder to extinguish than I expected.

Oh well it could have been a lot worse.

(I would have expected the plastic on a toaster to be fire resistant).

Stay safe.

Mutrah Souk

The market was built two centuries ago using palm leaves and mud resistant to high temperatures.

The Mutrah souq was also called Al Dhalam, meaning dark in Arabic, referring to the narrow aisles that did not allow the sun's rays to infiltrate to illuminate the stalls, so much so that people advanced with lamps along the street.

Burney Falls is a waterfall on Burney Creek, within McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, in Shasta County, California, USA.

The water comes from underground springs above & at the falls, which are 129 feet high, & provides a constant flow rate of 379 million litres per day, even during the dry summer months. The falls are an example of river drainage regulated by stratigraphically-controlled springs, & of a waterfall formed by undercutting of horizontal strata. The falls were called "the Eighth Wonder of the World" by President T. Roosevelt, & were declared a National Natural Landmark in Dec 1954. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burney_Falls#p-search

A quick peep inside a geode --

Geodes are spherical to subspherical rock structures with an internal cavity lined with mineral materials. They have a durable outer wall that is more resistant to weathering than the surrounding bedrock. This allows the geode to survive intact when the surrounding bedrock weathers away. The mineral lining the cavity is often a scintillating druse of tiny quartz crystals underlain by multiple bands of translucent gray and white agate. Many are lined with more spectacular treasures.

Rich purple amethyst, perfect white calcite crystals, and colorful banded agate are other common linings. Rare geodes can be filled with beautiful blue gem silica, pink rhodochrosite, spectacular opal with vivid play-of-color or other rare materials. Geodes range in size from under one centimeter to several meters in length. From the outside most geodes look like common rocks, but when they are opened the sight can be breathtaking.

"Alas! an Earthen Berm!"

The КAЛMAЗ Tифyyн is a Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected [MRAP] amphibious vehicle of the Khakas National Garrison. With four large wheels with variable hydraulic height for optimal off-road performance and a powerful engine, the Tифyyн is a very adept APC. The Factory КAЛMAЗ, the military branch factory of Кoи Automotives, developed this vehicle upon request by the Khakas Provisional Government, and was completed under the foresight of the National Garrison. One might think a tall, windowed, eerily-similar-to-a-airport-fire-engine Armored Personnel Carrier would be ineffective, but to the contrary, its remarkable ability to resist improvised mines and strangely high speed makes it a favorite amongst the mechanized portions of the Khakas National Garrison.

I think this counts as tension in a photograph! This sea otter was struggling to bite off portions of its breakfast (poor octopus!).

Morro Bay, CA.

Native to China, tree normally reaching a height of 20–35 m (66–115 ft). A combination of resistance to disease, insect-resistant wood and the ability to form aerial roots and sprouts makes ginkgos long-lived, with some specimens claimed to be more than 2,500 years old. Ginkgos are dioecious, with separate sexes, some trees being female and others being male. Male plants produce small pollen cones. Female plants produce fruit-like seeds. (Wikipedia)
