Coffee is very resistant to fading so there is little contrast between the exposed and unexposed areas. This isn't helped by the light "leaking" underneath the grass seeds making the image less distinct.

It reminds me of those fleeting glimpses you get at the corner of your eye when you are not sure what you've seen.

Substrate: Watercolour paper 180gsm

Light sensitive anthotype dye: coffee

Application: Layer substrate over coffee. Dry and repeat until all the coffee has been absorbed.

Opaque layer: grass seeds

Exposure time: 28 days (2-10h sunlight per day)

...and dead, I think. No greenery is growing from the top of this tree, so I think it is no longer among the living. Of course, that doesn't mean it didn't live a long life. The trees in the grove at the end of Bristlecone Trail range in age between 1,000 - 5,000 years.

This is one of the hikes that I wanted to do more than any other hike. I think bristlecone pines are my favorite trees. I find it mind-boggling that they can live in extremely harsh environments for thousands of years.

The Great Basin Bristlecones are an extremely rare species found only in California, Nevada, and Utah. They live just above tree line and grow verrry slowly, sometimes not even growing a tree ring in a year. Their dense wood is insect, fungi, and rot-resistant.

This tree pictured here is a part of a grove that grows on the northeast side of Wheeler Peak. This grove is actually growing on a glacial moraine of quartzite boulders. Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that originated from sandstone that was altered by heat and pressure.

The Picardie glass is a strong French bistro glass designed around 1927 that is resistant to both cold and hot drinks. The typical shape makes the glass universal and practical because it fits comfortably in the hand and is stackable. It is widely used in both French hospitality and households. There are several sizes available.

The original classical design comes from the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain company and was aimed at manufacturing it mechanically. The uniqueness of the glass is that it forms a whole with the fingers to bring a liquid to the mouth. While the slightly outwardly formed edge of the glass spouts towards the lips, the glass remains on the forefinger and thumb below the smooth surface of this edge, and the remaining fingers find their way to the cannelures. This makes the relatively thick glass feel thinner than it actually is. This profile also increases the light glare. Although created for the practical purpose in the 20s of the 20th century, it has 18th-century characteristics of the French crystal of that time, recognizable by the faceted tulip shape.

Here is a new colour work I have been processing for the past months. This one is the first of a series and I am really happy to post it to see how people react to it. Your comments are very welcome.

These succulent flowers add a lovely splash of colour to autumn / winter gardens - and they're great medicinal plants.

Taken in my garden in Somerset West, Western Cape, South Africa.

Taking the comment of Scoobay into consideration I made another attempt at throwing watches in my fishtank. The result was cleaned up and sharpened in Photoshop. This is the first tabletop shot with my new cheapo wireless triggers (Cactus V2s).

Strobist info: One Speedlite 430EX to the left shot through a white umbrella at 1/8th, triggered by a Cactus wireless trigger. One 300W strobe at 1/16th shot through frosted plexiglass behind the tank. Black acrylic sheets to the left and right were added for more defined reflections in the water.

Fourth District Court of Appeal, New Courthouse, and Parking Garage

WEST PALM BEACH, FL

The 43,711-square-foot courthouse building includes a secure public lobby with bullet-resistant glass and a metal detector; one courtroom with extensive mahogany-stained millwork and intricate barreled ceilings with glass-reinforced panels; 14 judicial suites; and a courtyard on the second floor of the courthouse located directly above the courtroom.

The façade of the courthouse is a combination of cast stone and precast 40-foot architectural columns. In order to place the courthouse’s massive concrete columns, the project team had to navigate around overhead power lines bordering the building’s public entrance without hitting the power lines or poles. A plan was devised and executed to hoist each column above a pre-built steel superstructure protruding from the building before carefully lowering each beam down through it.

Parking is provided in the new precast parking garage located behind the courthouse. The garage is a four-story structure with a total of 334 spaces. The first level, with 95 spaces, is dedicated exclusively to the Fourth District Court and has an entrance from the south. The upper levels are reserved for state employees who have access to the garage through a ramp on the east side of it.

Walks along a beach as a geologist can be both extremely interesting and confounding-- the bicep of Cape Cod, so to speak, is a re-worked glacial morraine, made up of sediment derived from bedrock to the north-- mostly that surrounding Boston. Pebbles, cobbles, and boulders of more resistant types of bedrock, namely, granite, are extremely common on these beaches. Whenever I walk a river or a beach, I can usually tell, with some accuracy, which bedrock unit a given pebble came from. Which is why it's extremely frustrating to me that I can't place this particular granite-- I don't believe I've seen it before. I've seen ones like it: nice pink microcline feldspar (rich in potassium!) is very, very common in the huge mass of granite underlying the eastern 1/3 of the state-- but to have them in nice euhedral crystals, with a little bit of alteration to what-looks-to-be-albitic feldspar along their rims? And the chalky white albitic (?) feldspar? The relative lack of quartz or dark mafic minerals? The pistachio green bits of epidote just hanging out as if they crytallized right out of the magma and weren't introduced later by hydrothermal alteration (although I have my doubts-- microcline doesn't get *this* pink-red without soaking in some juices). It looks a little bit like granites that are lumped into the catch-all unit of Dedham granite (used to describe pretty much all granite around Boston), but, well... I just don't know. The fun thing about geology, and science, is that there are always mysteries to solve. The bedrock geology of the southeastern 1/3 of Massachusetts is very poorly mapped-- many, many different granites all lumped together. I was hoping to eventually take a crack at these rocks amongst others, but, alas, no longer have that job-- it's unclear if anyone will be mapping that geology anytime soon-- it's something I've been wanting to see done, and I was hoping to be one of the people to do it.

Mural "Gabriel Ottelet" by the Spanish artist Dridali (Adrián Mateo) at the corner of rue Brunehaut and Ottelet in Mesvin (Mons).

Dridali is based in Valencia. His specialty consists in drawing poeple's faces in a hyper-realistic style and in spray technique, a very versatile and durable technique.

Mesvin was the scene of extraordinary courage, that of Gabriel Ottelet, resistance fighter during the 1940-45 War. After having killed a German officer, he took refuge in the attic of the postman of Mesvin (in the same house which today bears the mural), unaware that he too was wanted by the Germans for fraud of ration tickets. Thinking that the Germans were coming for him, Gabriel Ottelet escaped over the roofs but was shot dead by a sentry on June 5, 1944.

- Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba), also spelled gingko and known as the maidenhair tree, is a unique species of tree with no close living relatives. The ginkgo is a living fossil, as a unique species recognisably similar to fossils dating back 270 million years. Native to China, the tree is widely cultivated and introduced early in human history, and has various uses as a food and in traditional medicine.

Ginkgos are large trees, normally reaching a height of 20–35 m (66–115 feet), with some specimens in China being over 50 m (164 feet). The tree has an angular crown and long, somewhat erratic branches, and is usually deep rooted and resistant to wind and snow damage. Young trees are often tall and slender, and sparsely branched; the crown becomes broader as the tree ages. During autumn, the leaves turn a bright yellow, then fall, sometimes within a short space of time (one to 15 days). A combination of resistance to disease, insect-resistant wood and the ability to form aerial roots and sprouts makes ginkgos long-lived, with some specimens claimed to be more than 2,500 years old.

The leaves are unique among seed plants, being fan-shaped with veins radiating out into the leaf blade, sometimes bifurcating (splitting), but never anastomosing to form a network. Two veins enter the leaf blade at the base and fork repeatedly in two; this is known as dichotomous venation. The leaves are usually 5–10 cm (2-4 in), but sometimes up to 15 cm (6 in) long. The old popular name "maidenhair tree" is because the leaves resemble some of the pinnae of the maidenhair fern, Adiantum capillus-veneris.

Ginkgos are dioecious, with separate sexes, some trees being female and others being male.

Although Ginkgo biloba and other species of the genus were once widespread throughout the world, their range shrank until by two million years ago, it was restricted to a small area of China. For centuries, it was thought to be extinct in the wild.

The ginkgo is classified in its own division, the Ginkgophyta, comprising the single class Ginkgoopsida, order Ginkgoales, family Ginkgoaceae, genus Ginkgo and is the only extant species within this group. It is one of the best-known examples of a living fossil, because Ginkgoales other than G. biloba are not known from the fossil record after the Pliocene.

Ginkgo has long been cultivated in China; some planted trees at temples are believed to be over 1,500 years old. The first record of Europeans encountering it is in 1690 in Japanese temple gardens, where the tree was seen by the German botanist Engelbert Kaempfer. Because of its status in Buddhism and Confucianism, the ginkgo is also widely planted in Korea and parts of Japan; in both areas, some naturalization has occurred, with ginkgos seeding into natural forests.

Utrecht (The Netherlands) has the Ginkgo seen as one of the oldest trees outside China and Japan, planted between 1730-1767? as a young tree or grown from seed taken to Europe by VOC-ships from the Isle of Deshima (as a result of Kaempfers discovery of the Ginkgo).

Cameroon sheep is a resistant, problem free dwarf breed of domestic sheep mainly found in the savanna of Cameroon in West Africa.

The animal is well adapted to hot and humid climates. It has no wool, as this would be a disadvantage to it in the African heat, but thick, tight hair, with an extra undercoat during winter months. This winter coat is shed once spring arrives.

The shoulder height of a male is 25.5 in. (65 cm) with a weigh around 66 lb. (30 kg). Females stand 20 in. (51 cm) at the shoulder and weight around 44 lb. (20 kg). The males have horns and a thicker fur coat than the females. Their most common colour is brown with a black belly, head, and legs.

They live in flocks and their diet consists of grasses, leaves, buds, shoots and herbs.

One or occasionally two lambs are born in late winter or early spring after a gestation period of 5 months. Their average lifespan is between 10 to 12 years, but it can be up to 16 years.

It is believed that there are less than 1,000 of these sheep left in the world but as a domestic breed it is not evaluated by the IUCN.

Along the riverbed it's thick with green. The overgrowth enshrouds the sky. The undergrowth is dark, damp, and resistant. Fragile, wet tendrils grab and pull at my skin. My movement tears them loose from their fibrous stems. The nettle stings. The grass cuts. I worm my way to the open areas, legs itching. Here, in spring, you could see clear to the river, but now the weeds conceal it. Leafy shrubs, wildflowers, vines, horsetail. A haven for slugs, spider webs, and tiny worms traveling on thread. Dewdrops glisten, ferns sway. Everything stretches up, seeking light. There's enough for all to thrive.

The Fish River Canyon is located in the south of Namibia. The Fish River is the longest interior river in Namibia. It cuts deep into the plateau which is today dry, stony and sparsely covered with hardy drought-resistant plants. The river flows intermittently, usually flooding in late summer. The rest of the year it becomes a chain of long narrow pools like in this photo.

This building currently serves as the Lake Worth Beach City hall. It once held an auditorium that had a capacity for 350 people on the third floor. This is clearly seen on the front of the building because it still bears the words municipal auditorium.

The building features Moorish towers that were designed by G. Sherman Childs. He came to this area in 1913 to work for Addison Mizner until he was able opened his own firm.

ThIs building was built to be hurricane resistant as well as to provide shelter since the Great Hurricane of 1928 destroyed so such property before in this area. Money ran but while the building was being built due to the onset of the Great Depression. Local businesses helped financially and the building was finally on dedicated on November 28, 1935.

The basement and first floor rooms of this building were used for assemblies and meetings. During WWII the basement was used to entertain the Lake Worth USO.

In 1953 the Lake Worth Playhouse began performances in the building but then closed in the 1970's.

Today this building is still in use and holds all of the city governmental departments.

Despite the heat that is making these days, I still publish photos of last winter. Pictures of the top of some of the peaks of the Guadarrama National Park, in Madrid. I started with a snowy forest with red trunks and as I climbed the trees they lost height and density. But as you can see in this, they go from being large trees to small trees but with characteristic shapes because of the strong winds and the harsh winter climate.

1450 Brickell is an all-office skyscraper in the City of Miami, Florida, United States. It is 540 feet (165 m) tall with 35 floors. It is adjacent to One Broadway in Downtown Miami's southern Brickell Financial District. The building is located on the corner of Brickell Avenue and Broadway. Designed by Nichols Architects, and developed by The Rilea Group, the building contains more than 580,000 square feet (54,000 m2) of office space and 10,000 square feet of ground level retail. The project was one of several new office buildings to open in Downtown Miami in 2010.

The building's location was the starting point to the tower's design, according to the Bruce Brosch, architect of the building and president of Nichols Architects at the time. Sitting on a corner with an acute angle, the building extends to the edge of the site creating its sculptural shape. Then, on the lower levels, it recedes to improve street visibility.

1450 Brickell is Miami's first LEED Gold office building. Hill York, a mechanical contractor, built the utiliVisor system in the building to continuously commission the building's HVAC systems.

At the time of completion, 1450 Brickell incorporated the strongest curtainwall window system of any commercial building in the nation. The entire 35-story glass curtainwall system is designed for large-missile impact (hurricane resistance), even though Miami-Dade County only requires glass in the first 30 feet (9.1 m) of a building to be large-missile impact-resistant. DeSimone Consulting Engineers is the structural engineering firm for the project.
