Years ago, this massive oak tree fell, but it never gave up. Its roots held strong, anchoring it to the earth. Against all odds, the tree adapted—growing a wide, breathtaking canopy that now stretches out like nature's umbrella.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber offers each facet of romanticism: the city itself with its picturesque lanes, sleepy corners and lovingly restored buildings invite a stroll through a long-forgotten time.

A thousand years of history and a fairytale setting mix with cosmopolitan hospitality to create the very special charm of the town.

Living in 1886, when this log cabin was built, it couldn't have been easy during the winter months - outdoor plumbing, freezing cold, a smoky fireplace, and only a lantern to light the long dark nights. The people of that time must have been a resilient lot.

This image was taken at the Moreston by candlelight event, which is an annual display held by the Grey Roots Museum and Archives. The young lady's smile was inviting but central heating and indoor plumbing won out for me.

Though we've had some sub-freezing nights recently, daytime temps have really improved allowing more and more Camellias to blossom without damage. There are thousands of beauties this week at the National Arboretum.

Most Camelia varieties have blossoms 3-4 inches in diameter, this one was notably smaller, less than 2 inches.

siamo noi i nostri piedi?

dove dimorano i sentimenti?

O...

Chissà cos'altro

Crocuses against the snow in my garden. Spring is finally here!

A story:

The rain beat down on the motel parking lot, while street lamps above provided refuge from the inky darkness that had descended with the storm. My sixteen year old self stood, hugging my body against the chill, wishing for nothing more than to be swept away into oblivion. Fighting within, I longed for the quiet and peace of nonexistence, while a force inside urged me to fighting and breathe against the drowning sensation.

It was the night that would mark the end of six-month months of homelessness: of living on couches, in dark mountain cabins and the occasional dive motels. For those aching months I had lived with my possessions in a pillow case tucked under the seat of a van. Many days my sister and I tried to comfort our three younger brothers in the chaos that our lives had become, while we eyed our mother in the driver's seat, steering our lives further into oblivion.

She had left our father, and found many backs turned and many doors in her faith community shut to her as a result. It's a story that I still have not had the strength to write about in full. It has left deep scars. But during that time, even though our mother knew that the journey was breaking us, she spoke of the resiliency of the human spirit.

That word became a beacon for me. More than any god, or religion, that was what I began to invest my faith in: we were resilient.

We have had a very cold winter here in DC including 10+ inches of snow and many sub-freezing nights and days. In spite of that, the Camellia collection at the National Arboretum has been prolific throughout the winter.

They produce thousands of buds and that open throughout the season. When the temps fall into the 20's the blossoms get "burned" and turn a brownish color but when the temperatures rise the new buds bloom beautifully.

Many of these plants are the product of a breeding program utilizing cold hardy camellias, and include a series of popular hybrids that were bred at the Arboretum after severely cold winters in the 1970s devastated the original collection.

I had a lot of fun making this one. It's nice to do an asymmetrical conversion once in a while, it makes it need a lot less fine tuning. I did have to refine the holes a bit though, and I think one of them might be too big. I like the overall result though.

Right back to the tropics just in time to wish you that kind of view for the upcoming weekend.

We return to San Blas Archipelago for the day, insisting on its fragility.

How else could it be when you're made of sand, your top altitude is a few centimeters above sea level, and you're rising in a region where storms are legion when they are not hurricanes?

Those who say "I'll do it," who are willing to take on a challenge even if they are alone, are true winners. The determination, the commitment to take action yourself, is the force that leads to victory. As Buddhism teaches in the principle of a life-moment possesses 3,000 realms, our mind or attitude can change everything.

Our "big" snow [of six inches] is melting back to reveal the early daffodils that were in full flower. As many of you predicted, they survived quite well. I wouldn't go so far as to say they are 'happy', since cold, snowy, windy, wintery weather continues.
