De DJ's in het Glazen Huis in Heerlen zetten zich in december 2015 samen met Nederland in voor de generatie van de toekomst in oorlogs- en conflictgebieden: kinderen en jongeren die leven onder de meest extreme omstandigheden en daardoor weinig kans hebben op scholing en ontwikkeling. Zij zijn de stille slachtoffers van de oorlog. NPO 3FM geeft ze met Serious Request een stem. Wijnand Speelman reisde naar Congo, een land waar de oorlog een enorme impact heeft op het dagelijks leven.

De opbrengst van 3FM Serious Request 2010 gaat naar de stille slachtoffers van aids. Op de markt van Eindhoven nemen Giel, Coen en Gerard plaats in het Glazen Huis.
A couple of years ago I got a request from the guy who was boss at the time for some pictures that showed what the area I had chosen as my new home looked like. It struck me as a pretty simple request but one that ultimately left me kind of scratching my head. Sure, a bunch of pictures of the area around our lake would give you a bit of an idea of the look of this part of the world but it is not really indicative because of how much everyone has tamed their property and turned it into what we want it to be. Lake Petersburg really gives one an idea of what my neighborhood looks like but it doesn't capture the environment.
I then thought of all of the agricultural land around my place. The old barns, farm houses, and fields are a huge part of the landscape but, once again, they are portions of the area that have been tamed. We don't often think about it living in the city but farming, while an absolute necessity for our survival, is similar in its impact on the environment to that of cities. Don't get me wrong, I understand the need for this land to be used to produce food and fuel but it eliminates wildness in a way that is not different from paving it over.
Then, a few days ago while I was out hunting down my 14th picture, I sat and looked at a point sticking out into Prairie Lake at Site-M and I realized that it really does show what the wild places look like in central Illinois. This is actually a manmade lake in an area that was heavily strip mined for coal for many years so it is not a truly wild place but it is a place where wildness has actually reclaimed what man once tamed. This is what wild central Illinois looks like now.
Correction: The information above is incorrect and was issued from a faulty memory. I had been reading about this location along with several others almost a year ago and when I extracted the information from my brain to write this, I got it completely wrong. This area was, indeed intended to be the site for an electrical power plant and there was supposed to be a multi-thousand acre cooling lake somewhere on the property. That plan was hatched in the late sixties and the land was ultimately sold to the state of Illinois in the nineties and turned into the cool fishing, hunting, and photographing mecca it is today. Thanks to Larry for clearing up my error.
