this is one of my favorite photoshop products. my goal in photoshop has never been to make things look "cooler" by adding a bunch of stupid effects to them. i've always tried to make any work i do in PS besides color and curve adjustments to look as realistic as possible.
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853 - 1890 ), Farmhouse in Provence, 1888, oil on canvas, Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection
In this shot, I wanted to replicate another of Hurrell's pictures, a profile portrait he did of Hedy Lamarr. In that picture, he has the light positioned directly Infront and above of her, so this is what I did for this picture. In lesson 59, Duchemin says that we have four voices, one of them is the critic, but that we have no use for the critic. I found this to be true when I would get frustrated because the picture didn't turn out exactly like Hurrell's. But I had to let go of that and try my best and I'm actually pleased with how this image turned out. For editing, I really wanted to get that dream-like and ethereal feel that you get with Hurrell's photography, so I blurred the skin a little more than my other pictures to get soft edges and to make the skin glow. I made it B&W, and made levels adjustments to get the background darker.
