Day 132 of my 365 Project
Well, the long anticipated "Woking Weekender" finally arrived and delivered a magnificent array of vehicles operating rail replacement services out to Weybridge, Guildford, Aldershot and Basingstoke throughout both days. No less than 34 different operators provided in excess of 70 buses, coaches and minibuses across both days including three 75-plates. And Burrows Coaches had "both" their East Lancs Darts out - EDIT - STOP PRESS! On Saturday it was LK55ADX and on Sunday it was J8UFX - first with the news!!
Now then, Woking is not the photographer's friend at this time of year due to high-rise office blocks surrounding the station area. Saturday started wet, eased off but remained rather gloomy all day, and Sunday was almost a write-off with clear blue skies and low sun. The one sunny spot we found came with a time limit as a ruddy great big lamppost shadow edged its way into shot therefore limiting use of that corner. All in all though, it proved to be a belter!! Maybe have it in the Spring next time please Network Rail?
If you live in the UK, you will recognise the horror of the Replacement Bus Service. You think you will be travelling by train, but end up in a bus facing traffic jams, roadworks and pot holes. Not fun. But she is sitting very prettily on her suitcase!
On Aug. 24, 2015, crane crews from Mammoet used a custom-built crane to lower the SR 99 tunneling machine's reassembled front end back into the ground. The newly repaired piece will be reinstalled by the contractor as part of their work to resume digging the SR 99 tunnel beneath downtown Seattle. A further shot of one of the five Optare Solos that transferred in April 2017 from the First Potteries fleet to First Cymru's Swansea Ravenhill depot, which are replacements for four leased 56-plate Darts and an Enviro200.
53829 is an 8.8m 'Slimline' model, which, with sister 53828, was to Connex's Jersey fleet carrying registration number J 108027. Connex did of course become Veolia, but that's another story.
In this mid May 2017 shot in St Helen's Road, Swansea she was operating Service 19 (City Centre-Uplands), which, with Service 14, has become the Solos' regular allocations.

Rail replacement bus services have been around fro decades and to demonstrate the point here are a selection of shots from Basingstoke back in March 1997 with coaches running up to Clapham Junction.
I went mainly to snap my local firm Fleet Coaches who had six of their Volvo B10Ms out alongside a few other operators. It's almost 26 years ago now...
Now onto the short double-track section between Bendigo Yard and Kangaroo Flat, Steamrail's R761 catches a burst of sun as it powers through Bendigo's outer suburbs and passes the former station in Golden Square leading A66 & N452 on train 8094; the return leg of 707 Operations' Riverlander tour from Rochester. R761 was substituted for R707 due to the latter being deemed unfit to operate the trip, with this being R761's first non-Steamrail outing since repainting into As-Restored VR black & red. 28/7/24
all our town bridges were destroyed or damaged two years ago in the worst floods we have ever known , this is the first one to be replaced. l think it looks like a mini Sydney Harbour Bridge..........lol

The rather inclement weather had me pondering whether or not to venture out to Basingstoke today (05/01/2025) but in the end curiosity won again! A good few captures here for you to enjoy.
It was back to Basingstoke today (12/01/2025) for another look at the rail replacement operation with an impressive 13 departures an hour. A bit of a Barnes-fest certainly added brightness to an otherwise grey day.
From 2000 the preferred chassis manufacturer for new and replacement vehicles for the First Aberdeen Ltd fleet was Volvo. This came about as a result of a decision to contract out maintenance to a Volvo franchise with First Aberdeen engineering staff transferring to that new contractor. Consequently, plans were made to replace Leyland Atlanteans, Mercedes Benz 0405, Scania and Dennis Dart types with brand new and young second hand buses Volvo buses from other First fleets.
Six new Volvo B7LA / Wright Eclipse Fusion artics and six new Volvo B7TL / Alexander ALX400 double deckers were overshadowed by what eventually amounted to a total of one hundred and seven Volvo B10BLE single deckers, of which thirty-nine were new and sixty-eight were between one and four years old. The second hand vehicles came from First Manchester (twenty-eight) and First Glasgow (forty). Wright Renown bodywork featured on all of the new single deckers and thirty-eight of the second hand acquisitions with just thirty of the forty buses from First Glasgow having Alexander ALX300 bodies. The influx of these new and second hand buses with the consequential disposal of Leyland Atlanteans, Mercedes Benz 0405, Scania and Dennis Darts to other FirstGroup companies spanned a period just short of eighteen months.
Fleet numbers –
2 – 7 Volvo B7LA artics, 132 – 137 Volvo B7TL double deckers, 601 – 639 new Volvo B10BLE, 640 – 677 / 801 – 830 second hand Volvo B10BLE, (Registration numbers and other details are given below the images of individual vehicles).
In 2002 six Volvo B6-41 / Alexander Dash bodied buses came from Essex Buses Ltd These were allocated fleet numbers 201 – 206.

It was rail replacement time today (Sun 22/10/2017) on the South Western Railway mainline with Mortons Travel of Little London providing the bulk of services for stations between Basingstoke and Weybridge. There was also a Farnborough to Guildford direct service.
Here we see Mortons Volvo B10M-55 / Alexander PS DP48F SJI1960 'Janice' departing Farnborough Station. The East Midlands Trains liveried bus was new to Stagecoach Ribble as L338KCK in 1994.
So, due to some dubious roofing in one of the house extensions, rainwater had seeped into the extension and flooded most of the back wall. Unfortunately, all of my Aliens, Predator, and AvP comics that were in storage were destroyed. I may have not showed it because I know more "valuable" things were lost to the water, but I was devastated.
I've been reading comics for a long time, and the Dark Horse series featuring the two FOX icons were the first comic books I ever really sat down and read. They were the series that I would always pick up whenever young me saw a new one on the shelves. The sight of them soaked and ripped in a mass of torn pages and draining ink was incredibly upsetting.
Luckily, my parents were kind enough to come to the rescue and reimburse me the costs for all the ones I lost. While they'll never be the same as the issues I'd read in my childhood, it's great to see them with new, shiny covers. A lot of them are in even better condition than they were before the water, so that's a big plus!
If you haven't read the books, they're really fun and enjoyable (albeit a bit mature). If you're a fan of either series, you'll probably love them. The Aliens books in particular go down some great alternate visions of what an Alien movie could be, while the AvP books show you what the AvP movies SHOULD have been. The Predator books are also great, and give a much more in-depth look at a character who isn't quite so fleshed out in the films. I liked the Predator when I saw the movies, but I loved the Predator when I read the comics.
Pick them up if you get the chance!
Another day of rail replacement yesterday with Pavilion Coaches Volvo B10M-62 Plaxton Excalibur UIL 4207 (ex M473 SBT) on Dorking to Horshams. After a few weeks with a motley collection of vehicles, this route is expected to settle down with London General vehicles from Monday for a few weeks.

Although Buses Excetera have lost the Surrey CC contract for Sunday services on the 479 to Stagecoach, on the first day of Stagecoach operation, 2nd September 2018, they were still present on the corridor.
The day saw their buses more gainfully employed running Guildford - London Road - Clandon - Horsley - Bookham - Leatherhead rail replacement, on a day of engineering work and SWR guards striking.
They seemed to be running the entire service, with several of their buses in use. Enviro200 MX08 ZFA is seen here at Bookham station on its way to Guildford.

Moving to Belfast, and Ulsterbus 1665 is noted here during what was a torrential downpour operating the 0815 219 Goldline service exBallymena to Belfast (however displaying 218.)
Given the B69F 3+2 schools layout onboard, this 13 year old coach is obviously quite unsuitable for such a service.
