Skeletal extensions of land reach like bony fingers across a section of Liverpool Bay along the northern edge of Canada's Northwest Territories. Only small villages are thinly scattered in this remote and inhospitable region of Arctic tundra bordering the Beaufort Sea. The relatively flat landscape is dotted with shallow lakes during the extremely brief summer season.

Since 1972, Landsat satellites have collected from space information about Earth’s continents and coastal areas, enabling scientists to study many aspects of the planet and to evaluate changes caused by both natural processes and human practices. This image was created by visualizing both visible-light and infrared data in colors visible to the human eye; band combinations and colors were chosen to optimize their dramatic appearance.

Woomera in remote desert country in South Australia was the site of early satellite launches, missile tests, huge explosions and sundry other aerospace research related activities. The base has been largely scaled down in recent decades.

ESA's Volare Space Robotics Challenge finals at ESA's technical heart ESTEC in the Netherlands.
Seven teams were invited to the finals to battle their remote-controlled robots on a mock-up of the International Space Station. Their mission: to unload as much cargo from ESA’s Automated Transfer Vehicle as possible in a given time.

I'm impressed with how well Digicel is extending mobile telephone service to remote areas. Incoming calls are free. Outbound calls are pre-paid with "top-up" cards that can be sold by street vendors. They also sell hand-crank cell phone chargers, since they also noticed the fact that only about 10% of the people of Papua New Guinea have electricity.
On a remote stand at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport in a late cloudy afternoon after the flight from CNX. This was captured on Thai Airways A333 registered as HS-TEH. Those buses are going to take us to the terminal.
Not exactly the prettiest remote, but I think I really dig using my iPad and/or iPhone as a remote control for my TV.

It was such a gorgeous day, I decided to try a low angle remote. fired with Pocket Wizards. results are the following 2 images. will continue to use remotes at upcoming sports assignments, including my company Canon 1-D's, which have faster motor drives than my personal Nikon D-1X bodies. stay tuned.

We were lucky with the weather on the third Plague Trip when we camped for a week in Michigan, as it was clear and cool every day except one. But we knew going in that Tuesday was supposed to be bad, with heavy rain scheduled to move over the Munising area sometime in the afternoon, so we built a vague schedule that mostly involved driving around but started with a short hike. This was the day we planned to walk the mile-ling trail to the Au Sable Light, one of Lake Superior's more remote lighthouses.
The Au Sable Light sits along the shore in the middle of one of those pieces of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore where there aren't any roads, and you have to come at it from the North Country Trail. You can either walk a mile east from the parking lot at the Hurricane River Campground or two miles west from the lot at the Log Slide Scenic Overlook. We weren't sure how soon the rain would get here, so we took the shorter path from the west.
Don't be deceived by this picture, though, which shows us coming to the lighthouse from the east along a narrow track. We overshot the lighthouse a little bit looking for a nice place for a picnic lunch, and I took this as we were coming back. While the path from the Log Slide is more typical of the remote North Country Trail, the path from Hurricane is mostly just a gravel road. I suspect the Park Service uses it to drive trucks out to the lighthouse, though we didn't see any of those. We did see a lot of fellow tourists. The path from Hurricane to the Au Sable Light is popular.
The problem with the current iPod earphones is the susceptibility of the jack to get twisted thereby creating loose contact. To buy a replacement of the original would mean purchasing as well, by default, a remote. The remote is cool but if my earphones would go awry again, do I have to purchase another supererogatory remote? What a ripoff!
My Nikon ML-L3 remote is used as often as I use my camera, can't live without it!

Wii remotes in various colors. No colors have been announced for launch. The official title for this controller is "Wii remote" nothing more nothing less.
Not exactly the prettiest remote, but I think I really dig using my iPad and/or iPhone as a remote control for my TV. The keyboard is definitely a better experience this way compared to either the onscreen keyboard or the keyboard built into Vizio's Bluetooth remote. Then again, I'm a much bigger fan of the iPhone's style keyboard than something like a Droid or a Sidekick (both similar in style to Vizio's remote keyboard).
We just returned from a vacation out to Eastern Oregon.
We drove down this gravel road for nearly 80 miles without seeing another car, building, or living being.
More photos to come of the amazing geological formations that are hidden in the vast emptiness that is Eastern Oregon (Steens Mountain).
Geltsdale is a beautiful, remote area at the NW end of the Pennines. The wild fells are marked still by the remains of the coal workings, rail inclines and lime kilns of the early industrial revolution and a few remote buildings remain.
We went to Kanchanaburi to see the Bridge over the River Kwai, and whilst we were there we hired a motorbike and drove out to the more remote parts of the country.
This is about a thirty minute drive out from the Chungkai War Cemetary. I took this at about ten in the morning, I think morning light has a lovely quality to it for this kind of picture.
I think this scene has something of a timeless romance to it.
