I¹ve been experimenting with remote controlling my Mac Mini in the past few
days. I realized I could use the attached webcam to view and snap photos
from the remotely-controlled machine. Unfortunately I inadvertently left the
chair in the wrong position in front of the webcam...

St Mary, Fryerning, Essex
Fryerning is one of those fat, pretty little villages you find so often in Essex, made to seem more remote than it is by local authority planning. In fact, it is really a suburb of the town of Ingatestone, only a few fields separating them, and their medieval churches a short walk apart. I had been here a few weeks previously, but on that occasion I had found that all five of the keyholders on the keyholder notice were out. Keyholder notices are unusual in Essex - churches are either open or locked, and mostly they are open -but I had seen enough from the outside to make me want to come back.
This is another fine red brick church, quite small, but it has lots of excellent modern glass, mostly dating from the 1980s and 1990s. The best is the outstanding Airey Neave memorial window by his niece Penelope. Neave was a lawyer ans Conservative politician with an extraordinary war record. Among other things, he had escaped from Colditz (the castle is depicted in the window), headed the MI9 secret service and read the indictment to the Nazi leaders at the Nuremburg Trials. A hard-line right winger, he played queenmaker to Margaret Thatcher, ensuring that she was elected leader of the Conservative Party in 1975. Neave was assassinated by a car bomb in the Houses of Parliament car park in 1979, apparently by the Irish National Liberation Army, although in recent years there has been increasing speculation that there was British Secret Service involvement in his killing. The window depicts St Michael and St Christopher, as well as Colditz and the Houses of Parliament, and was by made by his cousin, Penelope Neave. As well as other good modern glass, there is a super 13th Century foliage font, most un-East Anglian. All in all I liked it, but the church itself is perhaps no greater than the sum of its parts.
Many people told us about the beautiful remote beaches on the natural reserve, Cabo de Gata. Although its known as being one of the driest regions in Spain, it just so happened to storm when we arrived! Never the less, we savored the moment as a special one since it was one of the only times of the year that the plants and animals living there refresh their water supply for the year.
We visited the village of Las Negras and walked from there to squatted beach Cala de San Pedro where ruins still stand from century old pirate castles.

Petropovlosk, Russia (Aug. 7, 2005) – Remote operated vehicle equipment is fitted aboard a Russian ship in Petropovlosk, Russia as part of the rescue mission of the Russian mini-submarine AS-28 Priz. The Navy transported two "Super Scorpio" remotely operated vehicles in an effort to assist the rescue of seven Russian Sailors trapped on the ocean floor in a mini-submarine off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The Super Scorpios and a team of U.S. Navy technicians were flown from San Diego to Petropovlosk, and then transported by truck prior to embarking on a Russian ship before making a descent to the stranded submarine. After peeling off the cover, this is what the generic remote I'm using looks like. There's a lot more buttons than are implemented.
I spent a night with my friend Sparky who invited me to attend his visit to a local hobby club. It was a fun couple of hours of photo enjoyment for me.
This is a home made remote for my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI. The black button sets the focus and exposure, the red button fires the shutter and the toggle works the shutter in bulb mode. It seems there are still uses for film canisters even in the digital age.

Had my camera sitting down on the headboard, testing my remote I had bought minutes earlier for an exiting project Im working on.
I usually get carried away with editing if its not for a client. I love extremely blownout images.
The guts of the remote to a Garmin GPS, which suddenly stopped working. New batteries were of no help, and it didn't seem worth pestering their support department when I have a perfectly good screwdriver.
The button contacts are on the other face. Notable here are the backlight LEDs mounted active face down in holes in the board, the IR transmitter at the left end, and the contacts to the battery compartment visible just to the left of the only chip on the board.

The northern lights (aurora borealis) as seen from Smith Lake on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus.
In 2011 I spent many incredibly cold nights at remote locations trying to capture images of the northern lights. There are many obstacles to achieving a good aurora image and this one is one of my early problem pictures.
It is recommended that one have a lens of at least f/2.8 maximum aperture, mine was f/3.5 with some pretty nasty chromatic aberration (ca) distortion due to my uncorrected (read "inexpensive") lens. Many of the stars look as though they have bright blue comet tails because of this and cannot be resolved as points of light. The camera was firmly fastened to a tripod and a remote shutter release was used but in-camera optical image stabilization was left on accidentally causing a small, jagged "J" shape in the short star trails (visible in the large raw image file). Finally, color balance; where, oh where do I set color temperature and hue for an accurate representation of the event?! This problem is worsened by my partial color blindness; the reason I now shoot more black and white than color images.
Nevertheless, this image still seems to capture the imagination of those who have never experienced the aurora personally before. I chalk this one up to several important lessons learned and hope you can enjoy it for what it is.

While the NS 702 is not remote equipped, many of its later produced sisters are. These signs have been popping up at Norfolk Southern yards all over the system as a result of these remote switching operations.

Our guide took us to this clifftop to get some nice sunset photies. Slightly cliched but - hey - who doesn't like a nice sunset :-)
Many of these electricity boxes have been painted, they add lovely colours to the otherwise grey streets of the city.
While COVID-19 makes it hazardous to approach strangers; I have decided to start on this new project of photographing electricity boxes in Helsinki.
