365 Days in Colour - 154/365
I'm sure many homes are now over run with remote controls for various electronic items. I remember the days when we had to get up to switch the TV onto a different channel. Of course, when I lived at home with my parents my dad acted as if he had a remote - he would just point to me and say, "Carol, turn the TV to BBC1." It worked a treat for him!

In July 2020 in a brief window the travel warnings were lifted and sailing resumed to and from Svalbard. I made my way from Denmark to Longyearbyen and then out with Hurtigruten on the first ship out of port for a journey to the northern tip of Svalbard and Moffen Island where we crossed 80 degrees north.
These are the photos from that journey.

She's just started playing with Lego, and made some pretty unusual things. (Especially compared to the things boys build.) First thing she made was a cake. She's made plenty of exotic vehicles, but often containing a shop "for baby food".
St Mary, Langham, Essex
Leaving Boxted church, I descended out of its remoteness along narrowing lanes, and after a couple of miles I eventually reached the track to Langham Hall. Langham church is set away from the road beside the Hall, and as I cycled up the approach lane I could see someone waiting on their bike ahead of me. I'm always conscious of the etiquette of greeting other cyclists. If you're in the countryside and they're cycling towards you then you always say hello, whether they're male or female, young or old. True, some of the more be-lycrad sporty types occasionally might not reply, but in general everyone is polite. But here we were off of the road, and I could see as I approached that she was a young woman, standing with her bike and looking down at her phone. I could hardly just ignore her, so what to do? But in the event, as I approached she looked up and gave me a beatific smile, and wished me good afternoon, and so with some relief I returned the greeting and skirted down to the churchyard.
This church has an idyllic setting near to the Suffolk border, pretty and remote. I had last been here some five years previously. The only sound that day was the wind in the trees and a cock crowing somewhere off towards Stratford St Mary. Today there was no wind, no sound hardly, the temperature into the thirties and the long grass of the churchyard baked into a hay meadow. This was the first church of the day where the churchyard grass had not been cropped, and it added to the sense of wildness, of remoteness. A square structure in the corner of the churchyard has a cast iron notice which tells us that this building is designed for the daily instruction of the poor girls of this parish in the principles of the Church of England. Another, more famous cast iron notice is up in the porch, removed here from the steep hill up from Dedham and Stratford St Mary. It is known as 'the dumb animals humble petition', and it implores us to Rest, drivers rest, on this steep hill, dumb beasts, pray use with all good will, Goad not, scourge not with thonged whips, Let not one curse escape your lips.
On my previous visit I'd been greeted by Jerry, the church cat, and what I took to be his brother, or perhaps it was one of his wives. The cats are obviously well used to greeting hikers through the Dedham Vale who stop here for lunch. A sign on the door asked me to make sure that Jerry was not left inside when I left the church, as 'he can't reach the handle'. Now, in Summer 2018, Jerry was nowhere to be seen, but the sign was still up and so I hoped it was only the furnace heat of the day which had made Jerry decide to hole himself up somewhere for the duration.
This church is open every day, and it really is lovely inside and out. Nothing terribly exciting perhaps, just a feeling of its own 19th and early 20th Century past, and the crispness of a restoration in 2000. A sense of simplicity and beauty pervades. This church was very much in the patronage of Darling family of the Hall who were known for their philanthropy, and it is interesting that Mayer & Co's east window depicts Faith, Hope and Charity, subjects more ordinarily relegated to a nave window. The best of the glass is a window in the south aisle from the turn of the 20th Century, depicting two angels, at once powerful and sensual. An 1833 memorial nearby to Margaret Eleanor Maude shows her levitating from her tomb up to heaven, as if this might be an entirely natural thing to do in this spot. At last I left, and headed up back up to the road, with a smile and a nod leaving all the angels behind.
