On a remote stand at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport in a late cloudy afternoon after the flight from CNX. This was captured on Thai Airways A333 registered as HS-TEH. Those buses are going to take us to the terminal.
Not exactly the prettiest remote, but I think I really dig using my iPad and/or iPhone as a remote control for my TV.

This guy has a remote control unit strapped to his chest. He was very graceful with his movements, even bumped a few cars off to roll down the grade under their own momentum. This was at the CSX Parsons Yard in Columbus, Ohio
We were lucky with the weather on the third Plague Trip when we camped for a week in Michigan, as it was clear and cool every day except one. But we knew going in that Tuesday was supposed to be bad, with heavy rain scheduled to move over the Munising area sometime in the afternoon, so we built a vague schedule that mostly involved driving around but started with a short hike. This was the day we planned to walk the mile-ling trail to the Au Sable Light, one of Lake Superior's more remote lighthouses.
The Au Sable Light sits along the shore in the middle of one of those pieces of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore where there aren't any roads, and you have to come at it from the North Country Trail. You can either walk a mile east from the parking lot at the Hurricane River Campground or two miles west from the lot at the Log Slide Scenic Overlook. We weren't sure how soon the rain would get here, so we took the shorter path from the west.
Don't be deceived by this picture, though, which shows us coming to the lighthouse from the east along a narrow track. We overshot the lighthouse a little bit looking for a nice place for a picnic lunch, and I took this as we were coming back. While the path from the Log Slide is more typical of the remote North Country Trail, the path from Hurricane is mostly just a gravel road. I suspect the Park Service uses it to drive trucks out to the lighthouse, though we didn't see any of those. We did see a lot of fellow tourists. The path from Hurricane to the Au Sable Light is popular.
The problem with the current iPod earphones is the susceptibility of the jack to get twisted thereby creating loose contact. To buy a replacement of the original would mean purchasing as well, by default, a remote. The remote is cool but if my earphones would go awry again, do I have to purchase another supererogatory remote? What a ripoff!

Initial Challenge: I can't use the GigaPan Epic Pro with the Nikon 1 V3 which is perfect for a 300mm gigapan, something difficult with the D800 due to weight of body and lens combo.
I have been scratching my head on how to get the V3 to work with the gigapan, but there are no corded release ports, only IR via the ML-L3 remote. I sent a note to GigaPan with no response so decided to take matters into my own hands.
Before looking at these images understand that I am not an electronics person, I was finance and now back to our alternate channels with the sales team. The soldering is atrocious, however it works and I am proud of my work.
Roughly 2 hours after starting, I now have a remote that interfaces with the gigapan via micro usb cord to ML-L3 and a secondary IR transmitter from an old slingbox cable (had to google to determine how to tell which side of an led is neg vs positive). This remote can still be used as originally built by Nikon, can be push button with extended IR, or can interface with gigapan and trigger shutter on the V3.
Now anyone in same situation I was in can build their own solution as I have not seen this done before. This was a fun challenge and if a knuckledragger like me can figure this out wonder was someone schooled in this stuff would do (besides better soldering).
Now just need to find time to go shoot a gigapan.

A couple of years ago we went out to Rood Bridge park to see if there were any birds around and found a young family out there with this toy... The little boy was trying to learn how to operate this remote control car that he had gotten for Christmas.. It was fun just watching him and he finally handed the control to his mom and wanted her to run it for him... :-)

The keyboard is definitely a better experience this way compared to either the onscreen keyboard or the keyboard built into Vizio's Bluetooth remote. Then again, I'm a much bigger fan of the iPhone's style keyboard than something like a Droid or a Sidekick (both similar in style to Vizio's remote keyboard).
Something i knocked up quickly to enable me to attach the wireless remote control onto the tripod (freeing up the hotshoe on the S100fs)
It just clamps onto your tripod leg and plug remote into camera.
You need:
1x Cold Shoe adaptor
1x Tool Clip (correct size to fit your tripod leg diameter)
1x 6mm long bolt

We went to Kanchanaburi to see the Bridge over the River Kwai, and whilst we were there we hired a motorbike and drove out to the more remote parts of the country.
This is about a thirty minute drive out from the Chungkai War Cemetary. I took this at about ten in the morning, I think morning light has a lovely quality to it for this kind of picture.
I think this scene has something of a timeless romance to it.

Our TiVo is one of the models manufactured by Humax. This is actually a replacement remote we ordered from the TiVo web site. But it differs only in minor ways from the original on which the power button wore out. (You would think the channel selector, which gets a lot more use, would have been the first to go.)

Dec 2 337/366- These three pretty girls have been bugging me to put up their photo on the "wall o'photos" in my classroom. I explained that the only way I would put up the picture would be if they were on flickr. They agreed and helped me stage this FGR shot.
Today FGR invades the "Show Some Remotes" group. Teaching video production I have this huge drawer of leftover remotes to things we probably don't even own, but we can never find the one we need. Ten remotes and six hands, still nothing on but the commercial!

Schematic to connect an ordinary Family Radio Service walkie-talkie to a DSLR to trigger the shutter with an audio signal. Earphone audio has enough amplitude to drive an optoisolator input directly: no amplifier or battery required. The optoisolator output can drive a camera shutter release input directly, too, so it makes for a trivially simple circuit.
One extra component is usually needed: the small signal diode allows current to flow "backward" during the negative half of the audio waveform. Without it, the output capacitor that's usually present on these cheap radios will charge up quickly from the constant "forward" current (DC rectified by the optoisolator), to the point of not passing any more signal. In practice, without the diode, you get one shot off.
I don't know if my radio is weird, but its single jack is used for audio out, microphone in, a dedicated headphone/microphone, push-to-talk, and also power in to charge it. They manage to pack all those functions into three connections (Tip, Ring, Ground). For some reason, that means the audio appears on the ring, not the usual tip.
This is the ultimate "Get away from it all" cottage with fantastic views across the loch to the Torridon mountains.
