Seminole Canyon State Park, Val Verde County, Texas. One of the more remote state parks, tucked into the southwest corner of Texas about an hour's drive west of Del Rio.
This area has been inhabited since the very earliest days that humans set foot in North America, going back nearly 12,000 years - back during the last Ice Age when the land was more verdant with now-extinct animals still roaming the surrounding prairies and forest. But over the millenia, the climate changed to its current, arid desert landscape - and the Indians adapted.
All through these years, the local Indians drew pictograms all over the surrounding canyon walls and caves. In the dry climate, protected by overhanging rock walls, many of these pictograms survived through the ages. Some of the more famous sites, such as the Fate Bell and Panther Cave, are the feature attractions of Seminole Canyon, and can be visited by guided tour through the park.
However, I have not yet visited these sites - instead focusing on other areas of the park. On the first visit (March 9th, 2008), I arrived after the park had closed for the day. I walked along the short 'Windmill Trail', a small loop near the visitor's center. This trail leads down to a small year-round spring and the ruins of a water catchment system that was used by local settlers over the past hundred years.
The return trip (September 27, 2008) was much more fruitful - I chose to hike the Rio Grande River Trail, a six-mile out-and-back loop that leads to the far corner of the park, almost a stone's throw from Old Mexico. With recent rains it was fairly lively and green, with countless butterflies passing through on their annual migration. The trail starts alongside the original 'Loop Trail', the 1882 railroad alignment that was abandoned a decade later when a less strenuous route was forged and the Pecos River High Bridge was built.
The trail itself is pretty boring - a flat, featureless hike across a nondescript desert plain. But the main highlight of the hike quickly comes into view. There is a mile-long spur shooting off to the left called the Pressa Trail, which leads to an overlook looking down at a three-way intersection in the Seminole Canyon below. Here, the waters from Lake Amistad many miles away along the Rio Grande peter out; to the right, the waters are wide and deep, muddied from the recent rainstorms. To the left, the two forks of Seminole Canyon are mostly dry. From the top of the overlook, sheer cliffs lead staight down over a hundred feet to the waters below. The view is, well, *breathtaking* - and worth the trip.
Back on the main trail, a few miles later it comes to an abrupt end at the junction where Seminole Canyon merges with the Rio Grande. The location overlooks the Panther Cave pictograms, on the opposite shore far below, accessible only by boat. To the right, a few hundred yards away, are the hills of Mexico. Here, the water is deeper, the canyons steeper, the chasm wider. An impressive view, although not as amazing as the Pressa Trail overlook.
From here, it is a straight hike back along the south portion of the loop, my only companion a great horned toad trying to hide in the gravel of the trail. I would like to return to this park to take the guided tours, and there are other tours available nearby on private land to other pictogram sites as well. And I am told this park is also fabulous for bird watchers as well.

Brendan loves making silly faces! This story photo was taken during the filming of an object converation written by Rafael at Streamwood High School. He wrote a dialouge between a TV and a remote control. We created this cool effect using an old hollowed out TV.
Remote, small and spoilt by the Irish Yew at its South East Corner which is possibly the cause for the recent re-pointing of the stonework that has been carried out. The quick growing Irish Yew tends to do nothing but damage to sites from my experience.

Cordaid in northern Uganda
In the Imvepi refugee settlement in northern Uganda, 128.249 refugees from war-torn South Sudan are trying to pick up their lives again (March 2018). Imvepi is one of many settlements in Uganda and in total over one million people from South Sudan have crossed the border to Uganda in search of safety. When they arrived, they had no access to basic facilities and essential necessities like food and water.
Uganda has internationally been praised for its friendly 'open door' refugee policy but could understandably not handle this enormous crisis on its own. A large consortium of international NGOs stepped up and helped the Ugandan government to make sure the refugees are protected from disasters like famine, drought and the spreading of diseases.
In Imvepi, Cordaid has built a water supply system that produces up to 80.000 liters a day and serves thousands of people. The innovative solar-powered system is a sustainable alternative to watertrucking, which is an expensive way to transport water to all - sometimes remote - areas of the settlement. Although a necessary first response, with watertrucking the distribution of the minimum of 20 liters of water per person per day isn’t always reached.
Cordaid's water supply provides 22 liters per person per day to 4600 beneficiaries. Throughout the settlement, Cordaid has placed ten tapping stations to ensure easy access to clean and safe water for everyone in the area.
Providing water goes hand in hand with hygiene responsibility. Poor hygienic conditions could cause potentially deadly diseases to spread rapidly. That is why Cordaid constructed latrines around schools and busy marketplaces, as well as hundreds of household latrines. On top of that Cordaid works together with a team of refugees who promote good hygiene to the families through an educational entertainment program.
Through local partner organization Caritas Arua, Cordaid executes a livelihood program in which beneficiaries receive seeds and farming equipment to start growing crops for consumption and income generation by selling the products on the local market.
Cordaid’s activities in northern Uganda have been made possible by funds from the Dutch public donated to the national Giro555 famine campaign in March 2017.

Cordaid in Noord-Oeganda
In het Imvepi vluchtelingenkamp in Noord-Oeganda zitten 128.249 vluchtelingen uit Zuid-Soedan (maart 2018). Zij zijn gevlucht voor de verschrikkingen van de oorlog in hun land en proberen hun leven weer op te pakken. In totaal zijn meer dan een miljoen Zuid-Soedanezen de grens overgestoken.
Bij aankomst in Oeganda ontbrak het ze aan de eerste levensbehoeften.
Oeganda vangt de vluchtelingen met open armen op, maar de overheid kan de enorme omvang van het probleem niet alleen aan.
Daarom is er een samenwerkingsverband in het leven geroepen van internationale hulporganisaties om ervoor te zorgen dat de vluchtelingen niet bezwijken aan de gevolgen van honger, droogte of de verspreiding van ziektes.
In het Imvepi-kamp heeft Cordaid watervoorzieningen gebouwd om 80.000 liter water per dag te verdelen onder duizenden mensen. Het moderne systeem, dat wordt aangedreven door zonne-energie, biedt een duurzaam alternatief voor 'watertrucking'. Dat is een dure methode om water te transporteren naar alle verre uithoeken van het uitgestrekte kamp.
Hoewel het noodzakelijk is om snel water bij mensen in nood te krijgen, lukt het vaak niet om hiermee iedereen te voorzien van het minimum van 20 liter per persoon per dag.
Het watersysteem van Cordaid levert 22 liter per persoon per dag aan 4600 mensen. Er zijn 10 waterpunten in het kamp gebouwd om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen in het gebied makkelijk toegang heeft tot schoon drinkwater.
Bij het leveren van schoon en veilig water hoort ook goede hygiëne. Door slechte hygiënische omstandigheden kunnen gevaarlijke ziektes makkelijk verspreiden. Daarom heeft Cordaid latrines gebouwd rond schoolgebouwen en drukke marktplaatsen en wc's bij de hutten van families.
Ook heeft Cordaid een team van vluchtelingen samengesteld die op een aanstekelijke wijze met zang en dans langs de families gaan om betere en veilige hygiëne te promoten.
Tot slot zorgt Cordaid via partnerorganisatie Caritas Arua ook voor de verstrekking van zaden en landbouwgereedschappen, zodat vluchtelingen gewassen kunnen verbouwen. Voor consumptie en voor de verkoop op de markt.
De werkzaamheden van Cordaid in Noord-Oeganda zijn mogelijk gemaakt door de gulle donaties van het Nederlandse volk aan de actie ‘Help slachtoffers hongersnood’ in maart 2017.

My wife and son like to collect rocks, so when we were in South Dakota we headed over to Fairburn so they could look for some agates.
This is in a small town that we had to pass though to get to the agate fields. This might even be the town of Fairburn, but I am not positive without double checking on a map.
