It was created in order to used as a new site for several cemeteries that would be submerged by Folsom Lake, newly created by the construction of Folsom Dam on the American River. Remains from the Gold Rush mining camps of Mormon Island, Salmon Falls, Negro Hill, Condemned Bar, Carrollton Bar, McDowell’s Hill, Natural Dam and Doton’s Bar cemeteries, plus five individual graves were relocated to relocation cemetery after its construction. In 1996, remains from the Prairie City Cemetery were interred after being discovered during the construction of the Prairie City Road on-ramp to Highway 50.

“The Aultman Depot”
“Built in 1878 in Aultman, Ohio, our depot began its life as a part of the Valley Railroad, later becoming the Cleveland Terminal and Valley Railroad in 1895. In 1915 it was purchased by the B&O (Baltimore & Ohio) Railroad, and it remained in service as such for the next 52 years. By 1963 the B&O RR was no longer using the depot, and in 1967 it was abandoned and scheduled for demolition.
Geauga County Historical Society president, B.J. Shanower, heard about the plan and negotiated with the B&O RR to donate the depot to GCHS and transport it to Middlefield for free, if GCHS members would do the dismantling and reassembling. And so, it commenced without a hitch … until the transport ride. Sadly, the dismantled depot was ‘lost in transit’ for a weeks before its parts and pieces were finally rediscovered on a siding in Middlefield. Apparently, the pieces had been mistaken for rubbish by yard workers!
Once relocated, the pieces were transported to Century Village Museum grounds in Burton. Three years passed before the depot was finally reconstructed from volunteers’ memories, with no blue prints or plans available! The newly reconstructed depot was opened to visitors for the first time in 1971.”
