This was my first time at Reflection Lake! I was really excited that the lake had at least partially thawed, I wasn't expecting it to still be so frozen. I guess that's mountains for ya :)

The last vestiges of snow is about to disappear from the shores of the smaller of the two Reflection Lakes. Here, at dawn, the lake has not yet been stirred by the breezes that will soon come and the reflection is flawless.

It was snowing lightly the day before and I am glad the low hanging finally cloud move out of the way just in time at sunset. Not a spectacular sunset at Mt. Rainier but I am consider very lucky to have a sneak peak of Mt. Rainier during a half day trip to the Mt. Rainier National Park!

Reflection Lakes at Mt. Rainier National Park is a bit like Oxbow Bend at Grand Teton National Park in that its moods and ever changing beauty draws me back morning after morning. In both places I search for new angles and foreground elements to compliment the stunning mountains off in the distance. And to capture the reflection of those mountains in still waters. Reflection Lakes are much more reliable for predawn stillness but are apt to pick up quickly once the sun peaks over the mountains behind. Never are there as many people at Reflection Lakes as at the Oxbow but then Rainier is a place for hiking and everything is uphill. Not to say that you can't see stunning beauty from your car, or get into the wildflowers in a very short walk on paved paths, but it is different. They are all different. It is a challenge to get everything in focus in these shots and so is necessary to have a wide angle lens - though while at Zion I began to hear about the benefits of a tilt shift lens for landscapes.

After holing up for the past several days, while editing photos, I stepped outside today for a little reading in the sunshine and a walk around the park to say hi to some folks. There are some really nice people in this park - just super nice. The man who disturbed my owl shooting yesterday, bought a new outdoor matt and asked if I wanted his old one. Heck yeah. So he is the nice man next door. Never did I imagine, though, that living in an RV park full of snow birds, seniors, would be party central! The folks like to have fun. Right around me are some people who like to decide for everyone else when they are going to listen to music, what kind of music it will be and what the volume will be. Ahhh, but I am learning some tricks and have decided that early on Sunday morning is my favorite time to rock out, while sitting on my deck, reading the Times...Some times a person has to take their power back and say enough is enough. Today the ladies from Company B had an all day pajama party while drinking bloody mary's until two or so and then switching to screwdrivers because they figured that they needed to stick with vodka. Not sure what they were drinking when they gave the free concert this evening. I live a dull life and find all of these goings on to be quite interesting. I feel like "Bones," when she says, "I don't know what that means." Well, they did me a favor and got me out for a little while.

This time period is all about editing and I am trying not to take more photographs.

Really soft indirect light flooded into the Reflection Lakes area at sunrise and lit up this early morning shot of Mt Rainier.

Got up early and snapped this shot as I was cooking breakfast and getting ready to head out for some snowshoeing into the Tatoosh Mountains south of Mt Rainier.

This is the sunrise from Sunday morning, yes July 10th, from what used to be called the Reflection Lakes area in Mt Rainier National Park! Here is a shot of what the lakes normally look like around this time of year www.flickr.com/photos/fresnatic/3812119264/ I spent the night up in the park shooting time lapse shots of the Milky Way as it traversed the sky and as the moon set. Once I figure how to put those all together I will post! That was a first too!

I hiked around above the Paradise lodge later in the morning. Again, normally you would be walking on paths, but our tremendous snowfall this winter and spring has prevented that. Somewhere beneath all that snow, our wildflower season is waiting!

This is a combination of three exposures (-2,0,+2) merged and tonemapped in Photomatix. I moved to Photoshop to clone out some dust spots and ran through Topaz Adjust to recover details. I adjusted clarity and did some noise removal in Lightroom.

The thing that I remember most about shooting this image was fighting off the abundant number of mosquitoes that were harassing me as I setup the view camera (not exactly a quick task). This is a scan of a 4X5 Fujichrome 100 transparency.

There are few areas in the National Park that have stands of old growth trees. I did not visit these areas on this trip. After more than 150 years of logging, only about 15 percent of old-growth forest remains in the entire Pacific Northwest, and about half of that is protected within Mount Rainier and Olympic National Parks.

I am ranting inside my head....

Mirror Lake, km 57 Milford Road, Fiordland.

The Earl Mountain Range beautifully reflected in the lake surface. Mirror Lake - definitely an apt name!

By the way, I saw a big salmon here. errr...or was it a trout? I have no idea...if it is a Toman (snakehead) i'd be very sure! :D

I took this picture in Mt Rainier National Park, WA during the July Fourth weekend from Reflection Lake. Normally you would get a beautiful reflection of Mt Rainier, but because of the unusually high levels of snow this year, there was a lot of snow on the ground, and the lake was still frozen. I picked up this s-curve on the thawing lake which adds depth to this picture.

Mt Rainier at Reflection Lakes. A Crystal Clear Day

On a clear summer day you can see incredible reflections of Mt. Rainier here. On this day... I managed to get some forest reflections in the thawed out parts!

Captured in the early calm, Lake Matheson lives up to its reputation as New Zealand’s most reflective lake. Snow-capped peaks, lush native bush, and a mirror-like surface come together to create a postcard-perfect scene. A moment of nature’s quiet perfection, where sky and earth blur into one.

Info about this location:

One of the most iconic views of Mt. Rainier in the park can be found at Reflection Lakes. Summer and fall, sunrise and sunset, it is perhaps the single-most photographed view for both budding and experienced photographers, who return again and again. In summer, the lakes are bordered with wildflowers and come autumn, they are a mirror of fall color. Many consider this area to be the park at its best — colorful blooms, enchanting animal life, and scenic, awe-inspiring beauty of mountain peaks and alpine lakes.

Early morning at the Reflection Lake. The wind died down to reveal the namesake of this place. Such a majestic mountain.
