Founded on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland in the thirteenth century.
It became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan Macrae. The Mackenzies' involvement in the Jacobite rebellions led to the castle's destruction by government ships in 1719.
The castle was rebuilt by Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap between 1919 and 1932 and has been open to the public since 1955. Half a million people visit the castle each year.
But I simply cannot resist my impulse to share this image which always brings a smile to my face when I need it most. Jonathan smiling at his alter ego TINTIN who I seriously think has to be a relative of his....the hair a dead giveaway lol...😂😂
Using her nose to find a member of the patrol team buried (intentionally) on an avalanche training drill.
In a quaint mood on a Saturday evening, we had the captivating idea to make a sunrise hike on the next morning. As the alarm went off at 2:30 AM, our bones felt to be tied to the bed – but hey, we had our plan! So, we got up, brushed our teeth, headed to the car and found lots of abandoned and empty streets on the way.
We left the car at the parking site at around 4:00 AM (even the ticket machine was still sleeping) in utter darkness, new moon had just passed the day before. We walked silently with our backpacks through the pitch-black forest, only the two small light cones of our headlamps revealed the next few steps. A sudden scream of a waking bird scared the hell out of us. A fragment of the lyrics of a famous Radiohead song immediately came to my mind...
Slowly, we made our way up, passing forests, mountain pastures and even some sleepless cows. Oh boy, even the sound of near cow bells is somehow scary in the dark – especially if you can’t really see the cow it belongs to. The second we saw the fence between the cows and us, both of us sighed with relief.
After a while of hiking, the first light of the day became visible, and as we turned our heads, we saw the dawn at the horizon. What a beauty!
As we arrived at the summit round about 6:00 AM, we could not quite believe our ears: there were voices! So we said Hello to three further sleepless souls, which got up even earlier. We did not expect that. By the way: greetings to our three young and funny fellow summiteers at this point! Nice to meet you =)
It was quite windy and cold at the summit, and sadly, a little cloudy. But finally, we saw the sun rising. A true feel-good moment!

Merry Christmas to all my Flickr friends around the world.
Joshua Tree National Park Ca. A rare sight to see the whole park covered with two feet of snow last year. Keeping my fingers crossed to see this again.
The snow is gone and it almost felt like spring today. This might be my last bicycle picture of the year - unless I sneak out tomorrow and take one more ride instead of packing and getting ready for our trip (without bicycles). I found some undecorated Christmas trees for my shot to wish everyone, and fellow bikers in particular, a happy holiday season.
These two schooners no doubt sail in the San Juan Islands but this is a combination of three of my photos as I imagined them sailing together. Alcyone is an 81 ft. gaff-rigged topmast schooner that carries eleven sails: mainsail, foresail, staysail, jib, flying jib, main and fore gaff topsails, fisherman, fore course, raffee and stunsails (only 7 sails are set in the photo). She is easy to spot with that square-rigged yard on the foremast. That yard can carry the square forecourse and the triangular raffee when going downwind. The black-hulled, 72 ft schooner Red Jacket was built as a private yacht in 1920 originally named “Katedna”. Based in Seattle, in 1931 she was renamed Red Jacket after a local Indian chief. She later burned and sank in Lake Washington. She was rebuilt her in cedar, oak, teak and spruce with a staysail sail rig. The San Juan Islands photo was taken on a Adventuress Schooner cruise. The schooner photos were taken at Port Townsend’s Wooden Boat Festival on a windy day.
two travelers moved through the same light at different speeds. the airport kept no memory of their shadows. by evening, both would be elsewhere entirely.

one red jacket in a universe of white and shadow. she walks through the eye of a sleeping giant, unaware that she is the only thing that makes it alive. calatrava built the frame. she became the painting.

the city empties itself of everything unnecessary. what remains is movement, color, and the quiet certainty of direction.
Watches over the dogs, searching for an intentionally buried person during an avalanche training drill.
A candid street photo of a young beautiful lady who sits on a granite stone bench by the granite stone wall and is fully absorbed by reading an interesting book about great love and adventures (maybe). My guess is she is waiting for her friend or friends and either she is a bit early or they are a bit late. A kind of minimalistic street scene. May the happiness be with her.

the shadows stretch long across the ground. they reach for the girl, for the dog, for anything that moves. the glass facade doesn’t care. it reflects the sun, cold and distant. the girl rides ahead, unaware. the wolf follows, its mouth slightly open. the game is older than her. maybe older than the city.
red against black. a fairytale that forgot how it ends.
calatrava built a city of the future. she brought a banana. they sit surrounded by genius, talking about whatever married people talk about after forty years. the water reflects everything except what actually matters.

a man stands on the cobblestones. a simple fact. his back is turned, his face is a secret. all you know of him is the hat on his head and the violent red of his jacket. it is the color of a stop sign, of a warning, of life. he holds a bag of the same color. he is looking at something, perhaps a menu, perhaps a memory from long ago. for a moment, he is a bright, solitary question mark on the gray street.
