A very red rooster and a speckled hen living on a farm in New South Wales, Australia. The rooster's feathers were a lovely dark rich red and had a beautiful shine as if he conditioned them with hair conditioner. I loved the speckled hen with all the texture and varying colors in her feathers.

I couldn't resist adding the speech bubble with the hen asking the rooster - "Will You Marry Me?" There were numerous other hens that lived on the same property and I felt this one was jealous! Just adds a bit of comedy to this chicken portrait.

On August 30, 2010 a Seattle police officer shot and killed John T. Williams, a Nitinaht member of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations. Williams was well known in the community as a wood carver. The in-car video camera from the officer's car shows Williams crossing the street in the crosswalk. He held a piece of wood and a 3-inch carving knife in his hand. The officer stopped his car, got out and according to his statement: called out multiple times. It is unclear if Williams heard the officer since he was deaf in one ear, partially deaf in the other and wearing a headset.

According to the autopsy report Williams was not facing the officer when he was shot 4 times. It has been reported that the SPD Firearms Review Board made a preliminary finding that the shooting was not justified and the officer's badge and gun have been surrendered.

This observation was one of the most magical and emotionally overwhelming moments of my life.

During later explorations I was able to photograph it at a closer distance! See photograph in the comment box below.

"The ʻiʻiwi (pronounced /iːˈiːviː/, ee-EE-vee) (Drepanis coccinea) or scarlet honeycreeper is a species of Hawaiian honeycreeper. The ʻiʻiwi is a highly recognizable symbol of Hawaiʻi.

"Linguists derive the Hawaiian language word ʻiʻiwi from Proto-Nuclear-Polynesian *kiwi, which in central Polynesia refers to the bristle-thighed curlew (Numenius tahitiensis), a migratory bird. The long decurved bill of the curlew somewhat resembles that of the ʻiʻiwi.

"Although 'I'iwi are still relatively common in Hawaii, they have lost over 90% of their range and are being considered to be listed on the endangered species act. ʻIʻiwi was formerly classified as a near threatened species by the IUCN, but recent research has proven that it is rarer than previously believed. Consequently, it was uplisted to vulnerable status in 2008. The species was listed as threatened by the United States Department of the Interior on 20 October 2017."

Great informational signs like this erected by the National Forest Service are few and far between. Wouldn't you like to know if your favorite campground is open before you drive the additional 28 miles up the hill. Peninsula Campground was indeed filled with mud and snow IN JULY. I saw it with my own eyes. PLUMAS National Forest

A shot that falls under our sister-project, Alchemy in Imagery (the crazier idea side of LunahZon)... this one is probably going to be the first piece in an idea of people who aspired too high/too long and fell as a result... while this one is called the White Queen, her character, in my head, is closer to Anne Boleyn.

I don't write like I used to.

Driving home from Ft. Collins on Sunday, Taylor and I were discussing the merits of some such thing over another, or whether or not some things ever transpired, and whatnot; turning a corner we fell silent as we came upon this incredible scene unfolding before us.

I almost stopped immediately but decided to take the Red Feather Lakes road a little closer towards this parting in the clouds. I don't think it made a difference.

Pulling over, stepping out into the biting winds, leaving the coat in the car -- not much time now to capture what's going on -- running up to a small hill where we might get the best vantage.

Taylor found an aluminum arrow lying in the grass next to us. In front of us, a turmoil of clouds vying for position over the land, breaking like waves on a shoreline. As quickly as we witnessed this scene, unfolding just for us, it was gone again. The clouds moved into empty spaces, swallowing up all the sunlight.

A few minutes later, a little further down the road, a tiny hole of bright cyan was all that remained of the light. A doe caught notice of our actions and starting trotting over to bear witness, and after realizing that we were not deer, jumped the fence and vanished.

A Sunday to remember. 20101121-9323-redfeather

Edit: Thanks to everyone who's stopped by in the last few years to check out my photostream. I just realized I've passed 10,000 unique views to my stream and 50,000 "view counts" -- whatever that may be. I feel I've made a huge amount of progress to my photographic techniques since I picked up my first dslr a few years ago. So much so, in fact, that I'll be making a BIG BIG BIG announcement in the coming weeks regarding my photography. Thank you all! --Coulter

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Regulus calendula, is one of North America's smallest birds. The red crown that you see here is usually hidden.Unless the bird is displaying for a female or, as is the case here, showing its agression towards an intruder on its territory, you would hardly see those red crown feathers unless you were looking at the bird from behind and slightly above. The testosterone level (yes, birds have testosterone, too) of this bird is most definitely at a high level.

Here's a few interesting facts about birds and ther colorful feathers you may or may not already know:

The bright red you see here in this little Kinglet's feathers and similiar bright colors like yellows and oranges that you see in other bird's feathers and beaks are made with carotenoid pigments. Unlike the black color you see in feathers which comes from melanin, a pigment that, birds can readily manufacture themselves, carotenoid pigments must be obtained from their diet. They cannot just manufacture it themselves. So, any time you (or, more importanly, a female bird) sees these intense colors it's a signal of just how well the male can find and make use of those carotenoid rich foods.

But, just because a bird finds and eats carotenoid rich foods doesn't mean it will have bright colored feathers because those same carotenoids are used to boost its immune system. In other words, just like for us humans, those carotenoids are good for its overall healthy development. So, if a bird has so much of it left over that it can afford to store it in its feathers, its a good sign of just how healthy it is! A female bird seeing these bright colors on display, then, would be well aware of just how good that male would be as a prospective mate ... both as far as genetic resistance to disease is concerned and also as a forager and provider to her young of those healthy foods.

If you want to further investigate these and other extremely interesting facts about birds, check out Bridget Stutchbury's The Bird Detective ...Investigating The Secret Lives Of Birds . If you like birds, its a fascinating read!

This juvenile male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird seems as proud as a kid with a first tooth, as it shows off its first red feather.

This set was one of the first sets I edited with Adobe Lightroom and I have decided to go back and see if I can add to it. This is a second version of this photo.
