"Vermilion Flycatcher - Selective Color" by Patti Deters. This bright red songbird is a Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus obscurus) and was found at found at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge during late spring. Although common in parts of the USA, these bright little birds are mostly migratory so I was very excited to spot his vibrant red feathers among the tree branches. The dark feathers on the face crate a mask giving this passerine a mysterious look. Flitting and flying in the trees, he perched on this tree branch for a very short time - just enough to strike a cute pose! This bird loves to catch insects, especially flies - hence the name "Flycatcher". They fall into the tyrant flycatcher family found throughout South America and southern North America and are a striking exception among the generally drab Tyrannidae because of the vermilion-red feathers. The males have bright red crowns, chests, and underparts, with brownish wings and tails. GPS: 4672 33°46'12.612N, 106°53'57.534W. You can clearly see his first two bright red gorget feathers in this shot, almost looking like two spots of blood. He's begun his transformation

This observation was one of the most magical and emotionally overwhelming moments of my life.

During later explorations I was able to photograph it at a closer distance! See photograph in the comment box below.

"The ʻiʻiwi (pronounced /iːˈiːviː/, ee-EE-vee) (Drepanis coccinea) or scarlet honeycreeper is a species of Hawaiian honeycreeper. The ʻiʻiwi is a highly recognizable symbol of Hawaiʻi.

"Linguists derive the Hawaiian language word ʻiʻiwi from Proto-Nuclear-Polynesian *kiwi, which in central Polynesia refers to the bristle-thighed curlew (Numenius tahitiensis), a migratory bird. The long decurved bill of the curlew somewhat resembles that of the ʻiʻiwi.

"Although 'I'iwi are still relatively common in Hawaii, they have lost over 90% of their range and are being considered to be listed on the endangered species act. ʻIʻiwi was formerly classified as a near threatened species by the IUCN, but recent research has proven that it is rarer than previously believed. Consequently, it was uplisted to vulnerable status in 2008. The species was listed as threatened by the United States Department of the Interior on 20 October 2017."

The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya is located at the Shambhala Mountain Center near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado.

Construction began in 1988 and artisans from around the word continue to work on it to this day (it was consecrated in August 2001). It is built to last a millennium.

We are fortunate the public is invited, the Great Stupa is truly a work of art inside and out. It's the largest stupa in the western hemisphere and is also the largest and most elaborate example of Buddhist sacred architecture in North America.

The full name of the stupa is “The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya Which Liberates Upon Seeing.” When you see it nestled in a picturesque valley of the gorgeous Colorado Rockies, the name somehow seems quite fitting.

Read more about this special place here.

Shot Notes: No flash of course and hand held using the Tokina 11-16 wide open f/2.8 at 1600 ISO on my D300. Shot five bracketed shots; processed through DXO Optics Pro v6 with automatic lens distortion correction applied; and then blended all five frames together in Enfuse. Enfuse really seems to shine on interior architectural images!
