These colorful birds were absolutely beautiful. They were nesting in the holes in this wall shown in the bottom picture in the comment box. A guide at our camp said he saw 2 suspicious men, who disappeared as soon as they saw him. He went to check and saw that they had put a net across the wall so the birds would be trapped. He released 2 birds and said that they are being poached for their feathers as decorations and for pets. Taken in South Luangwa, Zambia.
Thank you for your visit and comments.
Happy Friday! No need for comments. I am so busy and not much time to visit everyone. Have a great weekend.

In the exhibition titled “Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris, 1900-1939” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
“A network of African American women in Paris enriched the interwar blossoming of Black culture known as the Harlem Renaissance. French society was by no means colorblind, but it lacked the segregation policies of the United States. In Paris, American women of color felt liberated from the double burden of racial and gender-based discrimination. They were free to study at the city’s many art academies and private studios and to show their work in prestigious exhibitions. Writers thrived in an environment that seemed far more egalitarian than the one at home. . .
“Ada ‘Bricktop’ Smith was the enterprising proprietor of several popular Montmartre nightspots. At her clubs, black and white Americans mingled freely . . . Bricktop’s one-time protégé, the singer and dancer Josephine Baker (1906-1975), was the most famous American living in Paris. She rocketed to stardom by performing theatrical roles based on French colonial stereotypes of Africa. . .
“In 1935, Josephine Baker returned to the United States for the first time in ten years. Hotels and restaurants refused to accommodate her, and reviews of her performances were lackluster.
“By contrast, Baker received a hero’s welcome on arriving back in France, In interviews, she expressed deep gratitude to the French people ‘to whom I owe being Josephine Baker.’ This exuberant poster celebrates Baker’s appearance in a show written specifically for her. It commemorated the fiftieth anniversary of the Folies Bergere, a renowned Parisian musical hall.
“Baker became a French citizen in 1937. The racism she experienced in the United States, however, awakened her political consciousness. In 1963, she returned to the United States to speak at the March on Washington for jobs and Freedom. She told the crowd, ‘I could not walk into a hotel in America and get a cup of coffee, and that made me mad.” [Excerpts from the accompanying text]
[Note: The poster is approximately 10 feet 9 inches tall (about 3.27 meters). It’s a truly impressive piece!]

This could possibly be my new favorite bird! Found this little guy at Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, Fl.
A young Swiss Guard stands on duty at the Vatican in Rome.
Once used to guard prominent Royal Courts, mercenaries hailing from Switzerland had a notorious reputation for fierce loyalty, optimal combating skills and unequalled discipline. While many Swiss Guards regiments existed in Europe since the mid-15th century, the Papal Order is the only one still in existence.

Taken near Red Feather, Colorado this is of the Rocky Mountain Ponderosa Pine Savannah ecosystem type (also known as Foothills Ponderosa Pine Savannas). This ecological system is quite rare in Colorado with only roughly 1% of the landmass in Ponderosa Pine Savannah (only around 10% of the original acreage pre-settlement is left). I took this photo when I was doing a baseline biological inventory for a potential conservation easement on the property, which I am happy to report has been protected from develpment.
Most of examples of this ecosystem were in the way of early development and the remaining occurrences are often heavily degraded with dog hair ponderosa stands suffering from fire suppression. This area happily had the classic "yellow belly" ancient pondos indicative of a pretty healthy community. There were also some really nice grasses and birds seen that are associated with healthy Rocky Mountain Ponderosa Pine Savannah such as Pygmy Nuthatch.
For more on fire ecology in this system see here.

This is a photo of a male house finch that has sticks close to our backyard. This may be the mate of the female that has hatched at least three baby birds in a net built in the rafters of our deck just 2 meters from our back door. The male is protective of its mate and the birds in the nest and are very vocal when Melody and I are out and about in our yard. I shot this using the telephoto capabilities of my Canon Powershot SX50. As an aside, it was rather windy on this particular mid afternoon. It is remarkable how these birds are able to hang on when the wind is buffeting them. This is the original of a previously posted photo that was cropped.

The massed bands including pipers and drummers of The Black Watch, Scotland's senior Royal Highland Regiment (42nd Regiment), performing in Hartford, Connecticut on it's1979 North American Tour.
The pipers are adorned in ceremonial dress, wearing the red Stuart tartan, whose origins are contemporary with The dark Black Watch tartan. The Black Watch Regiment has been privileged to have the exclusive right to wear the Red Vulture feathers (The Red Hackle)in their bonnet beginning in 1822, as a symbol of gallantry and devotion to duty.
The Black Watch's military history goes back to the early 18th century in the Highlands of Scotland, and its headquarters is Balhousie Castle, Perth, Scotland. The massed bands, pipes, drums and dancers of The Black Watch have had numerous tours in the United States, and I vividly remember as a teenager being thrilled by them in an earlier North American concert tour performance held in November 1963 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
