More than 1500 children from across South Carolina gathered at the State House on Thursday, April 10 to celebrate reading at the 2014 South Carolina Read-In. This annual event, sponsored by the South Carolina Association of School Librarians and the South Carolina State Library, lets students show why kids who read succeed. The theme of the event celebrates reading and encourages students to continue reading. This year’s event featured individuals representing various countries who read the book Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss in their native language.

Participants gathered in the State Library’s parking lot between 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The parade to the State House began at 10:00 a.m. International representatives in native dress paraded from the State Library to the State House lead by the Benedict College drum line with State Librarian Hulen E. Bivins, USC’s Cocky, Miss South Carolina USA, South Carolina Teacher of the Year Darleen Sutton, author Karen Petit with her dog Louise, and many more.

Even I still like the previous versions but I want to create community type of web app and this fresh style suits it better in my opinion. (at this moment :)

You might want to start with something a bit more challenging.

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

Margaret Fuller

“To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”

Victor Hugo

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

Dr. Seuss

It was the day of the Full Hunter's Moon. All the people at an elementary school in south Georgia awoke to find that something strange had happened. Everyone had become characters from the books in the library.

DAY 108

Now I know I keep saying this in each blog post, but Indonesia has to be my favourite country so far. Surfing, diving, snorkeling, hiking, biking, cooking, drinking, eating, water sliding – it has been an awesome couple of weeks to say the least. But the best part was seeing my girlfriend again. Long distance sucks and I wouldn’t wish it upon my greatest enemy. Sarah’s friend Daisy also joined us for 9 days, but most of the time she was busy beating smitten Indonesia fellas off with a stick.

We chilled out in Gili Trawangan for a few days in the beginning and soaked up some well-earned beach time with crispy cool Bintangs, cushiony chairs perched in the sand, skin piercing sun rays and bathtub temperature sea water. Backpacking is a tiring lifestyle, so it’s nice to take a holiday from my trip every so often!

Now I loved doing my diving courses in Koh Tao, but if I am to be honest, the visibility was kind of rubbish. I did my first fun dive in Gili T, it was nice not having to run through all the safety crap beforehand. Got on the boat, suited up and before I knew it, I was rolling backwards off the side of the boat into the crystal clear ocean. The water was about 3 to 4 times clearer than any diving I had done before. We hit 30m in no time and almost trod on a sting ray that was laying in the sand, got surrounded by a school of a thousand Jack fish, stalked a sleeping octopus and came face to face with a turtle the size of a 6 person dining table. The real excitement came when I saw my guide signaling at me with both hands clasped together on top of his head. What’s he…? Does that mean?!? SHARK!!! I swiveled my head around to find a pack of sharks effortlessly circling around us hunting for their next meal. They were at least 2.5 metres in length and in total I saw about 6 of them. So awesome. Have I mentioned that diving is my favourite thing in the world to do!?! While we were on Gili, we also hired a private boat and went out snorkeling and there were turtles galore! We pursued one for a while, often patting its shell when it wasn’t looking.

After Gili times we went volcano trekking via a one night stopover in Lombok. The plane ride over to Java was a bit of a disaster. Our flight got cancelled, but fortunately the lovely lady at the counter squeezed us onto another flight which meant we needed to sprint through the airport to make it on time. I then proceeded to listen to a baby screeching like the dial tone of a fax machine for the entire journey. All I could think in that moment was how much fun my brother and his wife must be having with their new born right now.

The first volcano we visited was Bromo. Up at 3am, bumping and bouncing around in the back of a jeep in the dark of the night. At one of the checkpoints our driver told us to lay down while he drove past some people. We’re not entirely sure what was happening, but I assume he was smuggling us into the reserve and pocketing our entrance fee. When we arrived at the viewpoint overlooking Bromo we impatiently waited an hour for the sun to rise and cast its light over the incredible vista that we’d seen in all the photos. What we found was a sea of white fog. So much fog that I could barely see my own feet. Great. Up at 3am for a view of fog! We piled back into the jeep, bitching about how disappointing Bromo was, tired from the lack of sleep, sad that we didn’t get to see the much hyped view and grumpy that we’d wasted our money. What our not so talkative driver had failed to mention was that he was also taking us down to the bottom of the volcano to traipse around and get a close up view of the inside of the smoky crater. Bromo, I’m sorry I was so quick to judge you, you’re alright by me.

The next morning we were up at 1am climbing up Mt Ijen. Hiking up the steep volcano in darkness, we inched closer to the bright stars at a height of 2800m. When we arrived at the top, our once comedic guide put his serious face on, handed out gas masks and ordered us to stick close to him at all times. I didn’t really take notice of how serious our guide was being because I was too busy doing Bane impersonations with my gas mask. Dangerously scrambling into the mouth of the volcano, trying not to slip down the crumbling rocks that supposedly formed a path, we descended a few hundred metres. Blue flames bursting out of the ground, toxic smoke bellowing and swirling out of the crater and miners slaving away in the deadly conditions. Lungs wrenching, kidneys failing, eyes burning, snot pouring out of the gasmask grill – and that was just Sarah. We couldn’t stay down there for long, the conditions were just too extreme for our unhardened bodies to handle. While we were climbing back to the top, somewhere, the sun began to rise and I walked with my head tilted back and watched through the window of the volcano as the sky slowly began to illuminate.

Climbing into that volcano was one of my favourite experiences yet, but my lungs were twisting and wheezing in pain and I couldn’t get out of that place quick enough! By the time we got back to the base of the volcano it was about 6.30am, and from there it was a pretty uneventful day…unless you’d like to hear about me napping for five hours.

I love Indonesia. The environment is so vast and every day you can find something new to see or experience. For example, we arrived in a small town and our driver tells us that there is a nice waterfall 10 minutes walk outside of town, if we can be bothered. We decided to go check it out and through dense green vegetation we wandered until the jungle split open to reveal an endless supply of water blasting off the side of a cliff into a deep crevasse. It was such a magical sight, and I don’t think it was even considered an official attraction. If this waterfall was in any other country, it would be heavily advertised and overrun with tourists.

From Java, we took a ferry across to Bali then a local bus to Denpasar through monsoonal rains. For a couple days we hung out with Sarah’s friend Lara, and she was kind enough to give us somewhere to sleep, unlimited access to a swimming pool and the company of her pup Wilbur. Lara took us to some amazing Warungs with the best Indonesian food I had during my entire stay in the country.

We only went to Ubud for one night, but any longer and I may have started wearing yoga pants and using words such as “feng shui”. Seriously though, that place is the biggest hippy town I’ve ever been to. It’s not a bad thing, in fact, I loved the town. Rice paddies, morning walks, trendy cafes, suspicious monkeys – I’d go back if I was in Bali again. I’m just saying that the ‘Eat Pray Love’ enthusiasts that frequent this town have had one too many wheatgrass shooters to know which way their downward dog is facing.

On my last couple of days in Indo, I met up with Zander and Rhyannon. I travelled with these guys for 3 weeks in Laos, so it was great to catch up with them again. We spent most of our time in Legian surfing, and with their helpful tips, by the end of the second day I was carving up waves. Okay, so “carving” might be a stretch, but I’m happy with my progress. I even took Sarah out on the water, and with Zander and Rhyannon’s lessons still fresh in my mind, I got her standing on the board in no time! But I now understand why people love surfing so much, I’m hooked. I spent way too long out on the water and now I’m sizzled like a sausage.

I’m now in Vietnam waiting for my good friends from home - Marc, Lisa, Ryan and Sophie to get here. It was sad to say goodbye to Sarah, but it’s only 50 more days until I see her again and if it’s anything like my trip so far - that time will fly by!

Demi Lovato insists she’s, like, totally surprised by all the attention her romance with Joe Jonas has been getting.

“It’s really crazy,“ Lovato, 17, told me at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. “I definitely did not expect this at all. But, you know, I’m going through it with my best friend so it’s pretty awesome. I think it was just time to be open and not hide anything.”

Yes, the 20-year-old JoBro isn’t just her boyfriend, he’s also her best friend. So what is Lovato loving most about her beau (besides their awesome nickname, Jemi)? Read on to find out…

“Honestly, it’s all about how comfortable we are with each other,” she said. “He’s seen me with sweatpants on and with no makeup. I’ve seen him at his worst and his best. It’s great. Like I said, we’re best friends.”

Will Jemi be making more music together? “Yeah, maybe,” Lovato said. “You never know. I mean, it seems like we’re always doing duets together. But I don’t know where my music is going to go…Right now, I’m just focusing on Sonny With a Chance.”

Jonas and Lovato’s Camp Rock: The Final Jam costar Matthew “Mdot” Finley has high hopes for the latest Disney duo. “I think they’re going to last,” he said at the Last Song premiere. “They’re a great couple. They understand each other.”
