These tiny birds have such huge personalities. I love watching them as they scurry back and forth, staying just at the water's edge, probing for the aquatic invertebrates revealed by the waves.

Although considered common, their numbers are in steep decline as humans take over more and more of the coastlines necessary for their survivial.

This adult in breeding plumage is migrating from the High Arctic tundra where they nest. Non-breeders do not migrate, remaining in their wintering grounds saving their energy for when it is their turn.

Duchess crouches behind a tall headstone hoping she has not been spotted. Nervously she grips the blade of her dagger releasing a scent of fresh blood into the air. A hard dread fills her stomach as the vampire moves closer to where she hides.... She will strike in.... 5..... 4...... 3.... 2.....

There was no getting out of the car to take photos, I took all my shots through the windscreen and between sweeps of the windscreen wipers. Otherwise, I rolled down the driver or passenger side windows and made the most of the opportunity. In this shot I pulled into some open ground beside the road to get this shot of a flooded mountain stream. The rain and wet windscreen capture the immediacy of the moment.

Die Geschichte der Berliner S-Bahn nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg ist äußerst ungewöhnlich:

Die Sowjets hatten nach Einnahme der Stadt den Befehl gegeben, das die „Deutsche Reichsbahn“ den betrieb der S-Bahn übernimmt. Als die Westalliierten in Berlin eintrafen und die Sektoren geschaffen wurden, wurde diese Entscheidung nicht angezweifelt oder verändert.

Erstaunlich für mich auch immer wieder, dass die „Deutsche Reichsbahn“ im Osten nicht generell umbenannt wurde. Schließlich gab es kein „Reich“ mehr. Offensichtlich hätte eine Umbenennung dazu geführt, dass die Betriebsrechte für West-Berlin erlöschen wären.

So kam es, dass die S-Bahn in West-Berlin quasi ein Ost-Unternehmen war. Es kam später zur Umbenennung dieses Teils der ostdeutschen Reichsbahn in „Deutsche Bundesbahn für die Westzonen“.

Durch die Währungsreform im Westen und der späteren Einführung der DDR-Mark ergaben sich dann erhebliche Schwierigkeiten für den Betrieb der West-S-Bahn.

Die S-Bahn war für die DDR ein wichtiger Devisenbringer. Allerdings wurden die West Beschäftigten des Ost-Unternehmens in Ost-Mark bezahlt. Doch diese mussten ihre Mieten und Lebenshaltungskosten ja in West-Mark bezahlen.

Dies führte 1949 zu einem Streik der West-Mitarbeiter gegen das Ost-Unternehmen. Hierbei wurden die Interessen der Arbeiter durch die West-Gewerkschaft (UGO, später DGB) vertreten. Die Reichsbahn erkannte aber nur den FDGB als gewerkschaftliche Vertretung an.

Der Streik wurde schließlich von den vier Stadtkommandanten der Alliierten beendet. Es kam zu Entlassungen und Maßregelungen der West-Arbeiter. Der Reichsbahn wurden mit selbigen Beschluss ein großer Teil der Infrastruktur der Bahnanlagen entzogen. Dies führte dazu, dass die Reichsbahn deutlich weniger Devisen einnahm.

Die Entlohnung der West-Berliner S-Bahner erfolgte ab sofort zu 60 % in Westmark und zu 40 % in Ostmark. Das Ostgeld wurde von einer eigens eingerichteten Senatsdienststelle 1:1 umgetauscht.

Mit dem Mauerbau einher ging auch der weitere Niedergang der S-Bahn in Berlin – sowohl im Osten wie im Westen. Die alten Strecken waren vielfach unterbrochen, es kam zu ersten „Geisterbahnhöfen“ aufgrund der Teilung der Stadt.

Der Bürgermeister West-Berlins – Willy Brandt und der DGB riefen zum Boykott der S-Bahn in West Berlin auf.

In der weiteren Folge setzte West-Berlin auf den Bau der U-Bahn und den Einsatz von Bussen, so dass viele S-Bahn Linien mehr und mehr entbehrlich wurden.

Schließlich machte die „Deutsche Reichsbahn“ mit ihrer „West-S-Bahn“ erhebliche Verluste und dünnte die Fahrpläne massiv aus, es kam wieder zu Entlassungen. 1980 führte dies zu einem weiteren Streik der West-Arbeiter.

Die Reichsbahn räumte die von den Streikenden besetzten Stellwerke – auch unter Einsatz sowjetischer Soldaten. Damit brach der Streik zusammen.

Doch seit diesem Streik wurden 72 Kilometer des West-S-Bahnnetzes nicht mehr genutzt. Dazu gehörte auch die frühere „Siemens-Bahn“. Sie liegt bis heute brach – schon 35 Jahre lang…

Auf der Bahnsteigebene befindet sich an der dem Bahnsteig gegenüberliegenden Wand ein Wandfries nach einem Entwurf von Heimo Zobernig, das den Schriftzug WANDGESTALTUNGNORDSÜDSTADTBAHNKÖLNHALTESTELLERATHAUSRICHTUNGSÜD zeigt.

One advantage I've found in buying a pre-loved camera is that it came with a basic instruction booklet and a more advanced CD. Plus it has a beautiful brown leather case. It was obviously not pre-loved for long as it was boxed with all accessories tidily wrapped inside.

I tried it out around the garden and found its operation rather different from that of my a6000 and look forward to understanding more about it today.

Have the pleasure of looking at yesterday's shots on my new 24" screen today. (It's not even the 25th of any month....)

When I read about the tree "Old Tjikko" in a book years ago, I hoped to visit him sometime. At first glance he looks quite inconspicuous, but the tree, or rather its root system, is almost 10,000 years old, making him the oldest tree in the world. For me, as a tree lover, it was very special to visit the tree this summer and spend some time with him.

Oracabessa, Jamaica

Our small group of five were the only visitors at Firefly. We wondered if, perhaps, Noel Coward, is unknown to some of the younger tourists in Jamaica. The house is unchanged since the day Noel Coward died and clearly in desperate need of restoration...although the site is beautifully maintained. It saddens me to think how it will fare in the future.
