100757 - Avro Canada CF-100 MK.5D Canuck - Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF)

This CF-100 was manufactured by Avro Aircraft Limited in Malton, Ontario in 1958. It was received by the RCAF in August 1958 and served initially with No. 414 Squadron in North Bay, Ontario. In December 1959 the aircraft was moved to Bagotville, Quebec. For the next twenty years, it served at various locations in Ontario and Quebec.
Around 1972 the CF-100 was converted to an electronic warfare aircraft to train fighter pilots and radar operators. It was flown by an electronic warfare unit at North Bay, Ontario until the end of its service.
The aircraft was flown to Rockcliffe in October 1979 and then transferred to the Museum.

The RCAF selects a theme for each year for its CF-18 air demonstration team. 2018 features the 60th Anniversary of NORAD.
NORAD is a combined, bi-national military command established by an agreement in 1958 between Canada and the United States to monitor and defend North America. NORAD is supported in Canada by the Canadian NORAD Region (CANR), headquartered in Winnipeg, Man., and the Canadian Air Defence Sector (CADS) at 22 Wing North Bay, Ontario. CANR maintains CF-18 aircraft on standby at 3 Wing and 4 Wing along with CC-130T Hercules air-to-air refuellers operating from Winnipeg, in support of the NORAD mission.

Looking north from the middle of the north-south runway at the remains of RCAF Aerodrome - Buttress. This WWII relief airfield was part of the WWII British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). As you can see the pavement is still in useful condition. Each runway is about 2900 ft long.
Provincial Highway 2 runs parallel to the runway less than a hundred yards to the east.
There are three runways arranged in a triangle with a small copse of trees at each corner. Obviously they must have grown up since the days when the runways were in use.

The CT-156 Harvard II is used for pilot instruction in the NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC), located at 15 Wing, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

The aircraft on display is actually not one of the 25 Neptunes Canada operated between 1955 and 1968. The U.S. Navy's last operational Neptune flew into CFB Greenwood, NS on 27.08. 1980, donated to "The Association for the Preservation of Land Based Maritime Aircraft",incorporated 15.05.1980 to accept the aircraft.
The Royal Canadian Air Force's Air Command replaced their aging Avro Lancaster maritime aircraft beginning in 1955 with P2V-7 Neptunes in the anti-submarine, anti-shipping, and maritime reconnaissance roles, as a stopgap pending deliveries of the Canadair CP-107 Argus, which began in 1960.
Engines: 2 Wright Cyclone R-3350 18 cylinder turbo-compound radial engines of 3,400 hp (2,535 kw) with water injection, turning four-bladed Hamilton Standard propellers and, after 1959, 2 Westinghouse J34-WE36 turbojets of 3,400 lbs static thrust each
Canadian Neptunes were delivered without the underwing Westinghouse J34 jet engine pods, which were retrofitted in 1959

The museum’s Auster was purchased by the RCAF in 1948, but spent most of its air force life in storage. When it was sold to a private company in 1957, it had accumulated only 22 flight hours. It is currently painted in RCAF silver training colour scheme, however the civilian registration number as used by previous owner has been maintained on the tail.
