DISTRIBUTION: Collected in the Rio Tapajos River, Brazil.
HABITAT: The shallows of major rivers and slow-moving tributaries with substrates of mud or sand. Lost ability to retain urea decreasing osmolarity for fresh water unlike salt water relatives.
APPEARANCE: Patterning is highly variable, with no two examples appearing the same. Some have golden markings, while others are almost white. Similarly, the amount of darker pigmentation can also vary in both shade and coverage.
REMARKS: Consumed by native tribes of the Amazon.
Potamotrygon sp. Have a venomous barb which can cause a serious and painful wound usually in the lower leg. (Walking with a shuffling gate in water will encourage the ray to move out of the way.) In severe wounds symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, fainting, salivation, muscle cramps, diarrhea, seizures, shock and rarely death. Initial treatment uses hot water to help inactivate the venom.

The bluespotted ribbontail ray (Taeniura lymma) is a species of stingray in the family Dasyatidae. Found from the intertidal zone to a depth of 30 m (100 ft), this species is common throughout the tropical Indian and western Pacific Oceans in nearshore, coral reef-associated habitats. It is a fairly small ray, not exceeding 35 cm (14 in) in width, with a mostly smooth, oval pectoral fin disc, large protruding eyes, and a relatively short and thick tail with a deep fin fold underneath. It can be easily identified by its striking color pattern of many electric blue spots on a yellowish background, with a pair of blue stripes on the tail.
At night, small groups of bluespotted ribbontail rays follow the rising tide onto sandy flats to root for small benthic invertebrates and bony fishes in the sediment. When the tide recedes, the rays separate and withdraw to shelters on the reef. Reproduction is aplacental viviparous, with females giving birth to litters of up to seven young. This ray is capable of injuring humans with its venomous tail spines, though it prefers to flee if threatened. Because of its beauty and size, the bluespotted ribbontail ray is popular with private aquarists despite being poorly suited to captivity. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed this species as Near Threatened, as it faces widespread habitat degradation and intensive fishing pressure throughout its range.

We met Kathy's brother Ray, and his family inside the Prudential Tower Mall so we could all go on the Duck tour together. He is into photography too, but he is a Nikon guy, rather then shooting with Canon, as I do.
Former Safeway located at 160 Morgan Way. in Mount Shasta,CA. This store operated as a Safeway for less than 18 months before being sold to Rays Food Place which is still occupying the building.

Former Safeway store located at 310 West Lake St. in Mount Shasta,CA. The building became a Payless Drug Store in the early 1980's and is now occupied by a Rite Aid. Safeway closed this store around 1981 as a new, larger location was constructed across the street. The replacement Safeway was very short-lived lasting no more than one year as Safeway exited the towns north of Redding. Rays Market Place made their entry into Northern California when they acquired the stores vacated by Safeway. This store became a Payless Drug Store after Safeway moved across the street. Payless made very minor modifications to the interior of the store with the outside literally untouched aside from the new PAYLESS spelled out where the SAFEWAY name was. Rite Aid now occupies the building and although the interior has been renovated with new Rite Aid signs the building altogether is still in very good shape architecturally speaking. This store was featured in a very widely distributed Mount Shasta postcard, with this Safeway prominently shown. I believe Safeway might have paid the photographer of the postcard to include their store in the view...
