Lewis River Channel, Yellowstone National Park. When I hiked along the channel, this stretch was the most challenging stretch of rapids I saw. Not too bad.

It was time for a pause when ML went in the hole at Rapids. Just like at Carver, new signals are poised to relieve the venerable searchlights, another ominous sign of the times, class one standardization and blandness on the horizon. It was fitting to follow these guys towards the east end of the railroad, a mere 31 miles to Billings, although ML will terminate at Laurel of course.

For the time being, BNSF 1663 is the local switch power at the UPM Blandin Mill in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The SD40-2 sits tied down in the perfect spot alongside what I consider a rather fascinating pine tree. I instinct tells me it's a White Pine, yet the branches are more clustered and rounded compared to other similar trees. It's a mystery I have to investigate further.

This section of rapids is part of a nature preserve in Vindeln, Sweden, and was just a little part of a multi-river logging system that was a driving, thriving source of the Swedish economy in the 1800's.

Shots rarely grace my photostream the same day they were taken, but today is an exception. I took the opportunity on a rainy Sunday to revisit Hillsborough River State Park. Some of my signature shots have been taken here, where there is a fantastic set of rapids begging to be photographed. I generally get so transfixed on the rapids that I run out of time to enjoy the rest the park has to offer. Today I made the point to hike both the Florida and Baynard Trails before taking in the rapids. My love for this park was reaffirmed, as I found the sections of the park I had yet to take in were just as stunning as those I was familiar with. I finished off taking a few new angles of the rapids, but before reaching that I really tried to capture the more simple beauty of the river, with its emerald waters well framed by luscious palm trees and floodplain.

Whitewater Ontario / Minden Whitewater Preserve

Not my normal thing but I decided to play a bit abstractly with the water at Rocky Mt. National Park. The river in Estes is everywhere. It seemed to be behind every place I went, and roared behind my van at the RV park. The snow was melting so fast the flow of water was amazing and I couldn't figure out how to make a pleasing photograph with all that white water. I found a relatively "calm" area of rapids and took this shot, then played in Topaz and Photoshop to create this image. This is one I'd really like honest opinions on, as I usually stay away from gimmicks and may just be over enamored with my own creation to evaluate it objectively. If you don't like it, I'd appreciate that feedback. Thanks

We were alone when my wife and I arrived at the Oxtongue River rapids, but within ten minutes a crowd of photographers, some toting lenses the size of Volkswagens, poured into the site, clambering over the rocks and even into the water, making it impossible to change locations.

I am glad we got there when we did.

Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

It's been so cold here, (-10) that I decided to play with some summer shots.

Glen Etive is one of the most stunning of Scotlands highland glens. Captured in this shot are the Etive Rapids at the Falls of Glen Etive on River Etive that flows through the valley and is an area favoured by many thrill seekers with their white water rafting being a site to watch for thrills and spills.

If the action on the river isn't for you then you cannot help but be impressed by the majestic mountains that only look more amazing when you view them at different seasons of the year.

For those who are walking the West Highland Way, this is a short detour from the track when you reach the Kingshouse Hotel at Glencoe and worth the extra miles for.
