Hindu mythology contains a story about the churning of the Cosmic Ocean in order to obtain Amrita - the nectar of immortal life. At the suggestion of Vishnu the gods, (devas) and demons (asuras) churn the primeval ocean in order to obtain Amrita which will guarantee them immortality. To churn the ocean they used the Serpent King, Vasuki, for their churning-string. For a churning pole they use Mount Mandara placed on the back of a Great Tortoise - the Kurma Avatar of Vishnu. As the gods and demons churned the sea, a terrible poison issued out of its depths which enveloped the universe. The devas and asuras approach Shiva who took the poison into his throat and swallowed it. Shocked by his act, Goddess Parvati strangled his neck and hence managed to stop it in his neck and prevent it from spreading. However, the poison was so potent that it changed the colour of his neck to blue, thereby earning him the name of Neelakanta (blue-throated one).[3] When the Amrita finally emerged along with several other treasures the devas and asuras fought over it. However Vishnu in the form of Mohini the enchantress manages to lure the asuras into handing over the Amrita to her, which she then distributes to the devas. Rahu, an asura, disguises himself as a deva and tries to drink some Amrita himself. Surya (the sun-god) and Chandra (the moon-god) alert Vishnu to this deception. Vishnu then decapitates Rahu just as he is about to swallow the nectar, leaving only his head immortal.-wiki

Goddesses, supernatural animals and valuables that emerged from the churning of ocean are, Lakhsmi, Apsaras,Varuni,Kamadenu,Parijat, bow, Chandra,Dhanvantri and Halahala(Poison).

Thirupullani is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Adi Jagannatha and his consort Lakshmi as Padmasini. It is about 64 kms from Rameswaram and 12 kms from Ramanathapuram. As per Hindu legend, Rama is believed to done penance to worship the god of ocean to seek way to Sri Lanka in grass, giving the name Dharbasayanam to the place. As per another legend, Dasaratha, the father of Rama, performed different sacrifices and did a lot of penance to obtain the sacred payasam(sweet pudding). He offered it equally to his three wives, resulting in the birth of Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha and Shatrughna. Following the legend, childless couple perform a worship called nagapradishta (installing a statue of snake god) in the temple

The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram (gateway tower) facing east. The shrine of Adi Jagannatha houses the image of Adi Jagannatha, Bhudevi and Sri Devi in sitting posture. The consort of Adi Jagannathar is Padmasini, housed in a separate shrine. There is a shrine for Dharbasayana Ramar in a reclining posture. The temple is revered in 20 verses of Thirumangai Azhwar in his Periya Thirumozhi in Nalayira Divya Prabandham. The epic is also described by Kambar in his work Kamba Ramayanam

Train passing over Iconic pamban bridge above Indian ocean in Tamilnadu,South India.

Pamban bridge is one of the longest sea bridges in the world connecting Rameswaram town on Pamban Island to mainland India over the Palk Strait.

With construction beginning in 1911, the Pamban Bridge was opened for service in February 1914; it was India’s first sea bridge. Although other sea bridges were eventually built, the Pamban Bridge remained, with a total length of 2.3 KMs, the country’s longest one until the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, later renamed to Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, was built over Mahim bay with a total length of 5.6 KMs in 2010.

Golden Rock WDG3A 13286 at Thiruvarur Jn after arriving with train 07696 08h50 Rameswaram to Secunderabad Express on 16th December 2022. This should have been my final ever Indian broad gauge Alco run, but a week or so after arriving home, I decided on one very last final trip in early 2023. I’ve visited Thiruvarur a couple of times previously. The first time for the metre gauge line which was just clinging onto life. The platforms at Thiruvarur were all covered in trees, quaint low height platforms for the metre gauge gave the place a country feel. Now we have no trees and electrification, full height platforms and a station that could be anywhere. It just about sums up progress across India.

A HDR try at Pamban Bridge, Rameswaram.

LAND MARK OF SOUTHINDIA

The Pamban bridge on the sea of south India of “PALK STRAIT” that is very the old connectivity of Rameswaram island to mainland India.. The name Pamban Bridge most suitable for both Road and rail bridges. It is the longest sea bridge in INDIA at a length of 2.5 kms and both the bridges stand high above all the bridges in India by the means of artistic architecture.

Exactly 97 yrs old railway bridge was constructed by a German engineer named SCHERZER with the cost of Indian rupee 20 lakhs and the help of 600 workers.. The rail bridge construction work began in June 1911 and was completed in June 1914.there were no loss of human lives while construction of the bridge. This is the only connectivity of the island till the road bridge was opened in the year 0f 1988.

But the road bridge construction was originally started in the year of 1971,

Adjoining the very old “cantilever railway bridge” (the center portion of the bridge is openable or in engineering terms one call it “movable” bridge to give a way, the ships to cross the palk strait.. ) The road bridge foundation laid by SMT. INDIRA GANDHI and the bridge was completed when Rajeev Gandhi was prime minister of India.

He inaugurated the bridge for the public use in the year of 1988. The 17 long years was taken to construct the sea – road-bridge and so many workers died while construct the bridge and also the natural disturbance by storm, cyclone to finish the project on time.

Rameswaram is a town on Pamban Island, in the southeast Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It’s known for Ramanathaswamy Temple, a Hindu pilgrimage site with ornate corridors, huge sculpted pillars and sacred water tanks. Devotees bathe in the waters of Agni Theertham, off the beach east of the temple. Gandamadana Parvatham is a hill with island views. A chakra (wheel) here is said to bear an imprint of Lord Rama’s feet.

Dhanushkodi is a city at the southern tip of the Rameswaram island, at the eastern coast of the Tamil Nadu state of India.

Dhanushkodi is situated in the South-East of Pamban, the Dhanushkodi railway line was destroyed in the 1964 cyclone from Pamban Station and a trainload of passengers was washed into the sea. . Even though the railway line was laid between Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi, it was in course of time covered by six sand dunes and it was abandoned. One has to reach Dhanushkodi on foot along sea shore or in jeeps on sand dunes.

Memories,

Buried at heart,

Once neuronally shot.

Some vivid, some blurred

Some worth a flaunt

Some vaunt, only to taunt

But, most of them taught

A lot.

Whenever I closed my eyes,

And opened my mind.
