Madurai - Rameswaram passenger on the Pamban bridge - a railway bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. The bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. Opened on 24 February 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 2010. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through.

Rameswaram - This portrait of an Indian woman drying a sari, which serves as her bath towel, was taken moments before her husband turned and realized my presence ( www.flickr.com/photos/156294418@N02/51346940261/in/datepo... ). If the man has a black look suggesting - wrongly - that he does not appreciate that I photograph his wife, the young woman is particularly radiant on this day of pilgrimage on the beach of Rameswaram.

Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town which was devastated by a mega cyclone in 1964. Subsequently the place remains uninhabited but for a few fishermen.

The church has lost its roof. But the walls are still standing and have bricks of coral on them. Behind the church are thatched huts where you can buy sea shells and memorabilia.

Ne me demandez pourquoi ?

Ramaswaram (India) - After the sacred bath in sea water, pilgrims take the opportunity - for a few hundred rupees - to ask for the help of a guru, a magus or an astrologer. Some claim all three at the same time. No need to go to a temple, the sacred beach does the job very well. Hindus use these "holy men" to predict the future and especially to gain the favor of the gods. Some families even have dedicated astrologers who follow them throughout their lives to assist them in their decision-making. A brief summary for a practice that is ultimately very complex.

In the photo, the "astrologer-mage-guru" (back to foreground) has just asked the pilgrim to bless an apple with a few drops of seawater. Don't ask me why? I do not know.

On the photo side, as you can see, my presence, although clearly visible, does not disturb the devotees in full religious activity. Having said that, on my last two trips to India, I realized that while Indians are still favorable to having their picture taken, more and more temples are now off limits to "non-Hindus" and cameras.

Rameswaram (India) - With my traveling companions, we are in the fishermen's quarter. Here, tourists hardly venture, attracted as they are by the only Hindu temple. Too bad for them because a few hundred meters from the temple, this fishing district is welcoming to foreigners. Children easily lend themselves to photoshoots. A little static. So I take advantage of the presence of my friends to try to take less agreed photos.

Rameswaram Temple corridor is the longest temple corridor ever built in India

We stopped off at Pamban Beach and when we got there the rail bridge was open to let the coast guard ships through. It only opens about 10 times a month (or so we were told) so we were extremely lucky
