YDM4 #6181 of Golden Rock at Rameswaram on the morning of Thursday 2nd December 2004. It had just arrived with train 6713, the 13:00 "Sethu" Express from Tambaram.

Recently I visited Rameswaram , a famous pilgrim centre at the south eastern tip of Tamilnadu and nearest to Sri Lanka.

What you witness above is the early morning scene of pilgrims who take a holy dip in the sea after performing vedic rites to remember and thank the souls of their parents, grand parents, great grand parents and other ancestors as per Hindu custom ! It was really a dawn to remember !!

Rameshwaram :

Rameshwaram may be better known a as temple town courtesy its connection with the epic Ramayana. When you come into this little town, you realise that it blends leisure, history, culture and spirituality seamlessly to give you an experience like no other.

Chennai Egmore to Rameswaram Boat mail express moves slowly over 105 years old Pamban railway bridge.

The Pamban Bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It is the longest sea bridge in India at a length of nearly 2.3 km (2345 meters) and stands as a fine example of Indian architecture. The bridge was constructed with sufficient elevation and a beautiful scenery of the sea, adjoining Islands and parallel rail bridge below can be viewed from the road bridge.

The railway bridge is 6,776 ft (2,065 m). Bridge was opened for traffic in 1914. Bridge contains vertical lift section and still it is functioning quiet well. It carries meter gauge trains on it, however, recently the Indian Railways are in the process of upgrade it to carry broad gauge trains. Structural Engineering Research Centre, Chennai - a premier national research laboratory in India, is handling this task.

A walk on the bridge is an exhilarating experience. At times the breeze could be strong. The view of the distant sea and the string of islands on the left of Pamban island is simply breathtaking. Though the bridge is a stunning structure, the entrance to the bridge from both the Mandapam and Pamban sides do not do justice to this impressive landmark.

The Pamban Bridge, Tamilnadu

Traveled in train after 25 months and that's what one of my destination looks like! ❤

This was an dream came true moment for me and also it's first time that my devices were along with me in a pole free region. 😄

There's double leaf bascule section midway which can be raised to let ships pass through. Also, there's new bridge under construction parallel to old one & it's new technology will allow trains to carry more weight at a faster speed.

The area was at this time in a military prohibited area.

From this pier, the ferry sailed to Rameswaram, India until 1984. The pier and lighthouse have rotted away after 30 years. The ferry service was discontinued because of the civil war. Until 1984 Tamil refugees could leave Sri Lanka from here. The railway line is to be restored to Talaimannar. It would be a great asset to the north of Sri Lanka , to reopen the ferry to India.

Pamban bridge is one of the longest sea bridges in the world connecting Rameswaram town on Pamban Island to mainland India over the Palk Strait.

With construction beginning in 1911, the Pamban Bridge was opened for service in February 1914; it was India’s first sea bridge. Although other sea bridges were eventually built, the Pamban Bridge remained, with a total length of 2.3 KMs, the country’s longest one until the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, later renamed to Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, was built over Mahim bay with a total length of 5.6 KMs in 2010.

The lardy WDP4s are too heavy for the ancient creaking ex metre gauge Mandapam Bridge, so this is all Alco territory until the new bridge is finished. Electrification will follow shortly afterwards.

The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus) owes its name to the Hindu mythology, in which this bird is seen as the messenger of the god Brahma.

In Rameswaram he dives to the left-overs of the fishermen, catching with his claws. His wing span is 110 to 125 cm. In Tamil he is called Parundu.
