The Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge on the Palk Strait which connects the town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. The bridge refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. Opened on 24 February 1914, its India's first sea bridge.The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through.

The Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Rameswaram Island to mainland India.
You can see the motion of a moving train in this image. I captured this photo from a road bridge which is adjacent to this rail bridge. It was challenging to capture a long exposure because the road bridge shakes when ever a bus or truck passes by, which happens every few seconds. With my setup ready, I waited for my lucky window of no vehicles.

Rameswaram (Inde) - Qui penserait que cet homme est expert-comptable ? Ce matin là, il est allé de bonne heure sur la plage pour se baigner dans les eaux sacrées, puis, il est passé prier au temple situé à proximité.
Le lendemain, me reconnaissant dans la rue vidée des pèlerins, il m'a abordé pour m'interroger sur mon appareil photo. Moi, je ne l'ai pas immédiatement reconnu car il était habillé en tenue de ville. Rien à voir avec son style vestimentaire sur la photo ci-dessus.
C'est là que j'ai appris que notre homme exerçait l'honorable profession d'expert-comptable.
Rameswaram (India) - Who would think this man is a chartered accountant? That morning, he went to the beach early to bathe in the sacred waters, then he went to pray at the nearby temple.
The next day, recognizing me in the street emptied of pilgrims, he approached me to ask me about my camera. I did not immediately recognize him because he was dressed in street clothes. Nothing to do with his dress style in the photo above.
It was there that I learned that our man was practicing the honorable profession of chartered accountant.

This bridge is the gateway to the holy land Rameswaram. It connects the mainland to the Rameswaram island. This bridge is around 2. 5 kilometers and its build across palk strait.

Au début des années 2010, les téléphones portables faisaient une entrée fracassante dans la vie des Indiens, comme l'atteste ce cycliste.
Mais cette technologie n'a pas vraiment changé les autres aspects du quotidien. Et c'est bien là le problème. Le gouvernement financent l'équipement du pays en téléphonie, sans se soucier des conditions sanitaires déplorables dans lesquels vit encore un grande partie de la population.

In the early 2010s, cell phones made a sensational entry into Indian life, as this cyclist attests.
But this technology has not really changed other aspects of everyday life. And therein lies the problem. The government is financing the equipment of the country with cell phones, without worrying about the deplorable sanitary conditions in which a large part of the population still lives.

Rameswaram (Inde) - Je mets le cap cette semaine sur Rameswaram, une cité sainte de l’Etat du Tamil Nadu.
Lorsque je suis arrivé de Pondichéry en fin de marinée après 16 heures dans un bus brinquebalant dont les amortisseurs avaient rendu l’âme depuis le départ des Britanniques, la ville était quasiment déserte.
En fin d’après-midi, remis de mon voyage, je suis allé me perdre au hasard des ruelles de la ville. C’est ainsi que je me suis retrouvé dans le quartier des pêcheurs. Accueil chaleureux des autochtones qui ne semblent pas voir de nombreux touristes s’aventurer dans leur secteur.

When I arrived from Pondicherry at the end of the morning after a 16 hour journey in a bus whose shock absorbers dated from the British presence, the city was almost deserted.
At the end of the afternoon, recovered from my trip, I went to get lost in the alleys of the city. This is how I happened to find myself in the fishermen's quarter. Warm welcome from the locals who do not seem to see many tourists venturing into their neighborhood.

Kunthukal beach is in the small fishing village of Kunthukal. It is 12 km from the Rameswaram main land.

Pamban bridge is one of the longest sea bridges in the world connecting Rameswaram town on Pamban Island to mainland India over the Palk Strait.
With construction beginning in 1911, the Pamban Bridge was opened for service in February 1914; it was India’s first sea bridge. Although other sea bridges were eventually built, the Pamban Bridge remained, with a total length of 2.3 KMs, the country’s longest one until the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, later renamed to Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link, was built over Mahim bay with a total length of 5.6 KMs in 2010.
Even as the seas continue to rise and fall, railwaymen never fail to do what they are expected to despite all odds.

Comme j'avais passé plusieurs heures à photographier le bain rituel des hindous, j'ai décidé de mettre un terme à la séance photo sous peine de saturer toutes mes cartes mémoires. Il est vrai que l'on ne tombe pas tous les jours, par hasard, sur un tel rassemblement agrémenté des belles lumières.
Je me dirigeais difficilement au milieu des dévots pour rejoindre mon hôtel, quand j'ai dépassé cette famille. La dame m'a alors mis la main sur l'épaule. J'ai cru que dans dans la cohue elle avait été involontairement bousculée. Mais non ! Elle m'a juste demandé si je voulais la photographier avec sa famille.
Ce sympathique groupe qui venait de Pondichéry en était à son troisième pèlerinage à Ramswaram.
Rameswaram (India) - The sun was starting to play on the contrasts. As I had spent several hours photographing the ritual Hindu bath, I decided to put an end to the photo shoot otherwise I would saturate all my memory cards. It is true that we do not fall every day, by chance, on such a gathering embellished with beautiful lights.
I was walking with difficulty among the devotees to reach my hotel, when I passed this family. The lady then put her hand on my shoulder. I thought that in the crowd she had been involuntarily jostled. But no ! She just asked me if I wanted to photograph her with her family.
This friendly group from Pondicherry was on their third pilgrimage to Ramswaram.

Rameswaram (Inde) - Un matin, juste à la sortie de mon hôtel, un artiste de rue travaille avec concentration à la réalisation d'une divinité hindoue. Je trouvais qu'il y avait beaucoup de monde ce matin là. Habituellement à cette heure, la rue est quasiment déserte.
Je comprendrai un peu plus tard qu'il s'agit du plus grand pèlerinage religieux de l'année. Un pèlerinage qui attire plusieurs milliers de dévots venus de toute l'Inde.

Rameswaram (India) - One morning, just outside my hotel, a street artist works with concentration on the realization of a Hindu deity. There were a lot of people that morning. Usually at this hour the street is almost deserted.
I will understand a little later that this is the biggest religious pilgrimage of the year. A pilgrimage that attracts several thousand devotees from all over India.
