If you happened to be in Utah's Tooele Valley early in the evening back in the 1990s, chances were good you'd catch UP's hot LANPZ train rolling down the mountain at Lake Point. At 7:11 p.m. on July 23, 1992, the old reliable Z arrived on the scene with UP 6024, UP 9299, pulling 39 cars. No subdivisions stood along the track (yet) to disrupt the serenity and tranquility of the moment.

An Elk along the road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This magnificent bull elk, dubbed "half-rack" is a prime example of the dangers bulls face as they fight for dominance during the fall rut. While I did not witness it, according to other photographers and park rangers, this fellow had quite the harem - until he lost a good portion of his antlers in a fight with another bull. He seemed healthy other than the obvious loss and would carry on like the others, only to no avail. Nearly impossible to fight like this (although he did try) he was at a distinct disadvantage and the cow elk would have no part of him. As he tried to get close, they would move away and steer clear of his advances. Poor fellow - from one of the top bulls to an "also-ran." The good but still perilous news is that if he survives winter, he will drop his half-rack and begin to grow a full set in the spring.

We witnessed other bulls that were not so lucky - gouged eyes, limps and obvious goring injuries. Nature can be brutal.

Thanks for viewing and have a glorious weekend!

NS 19W led by NS 3638 heads west through Shawsville, VA on a lovely early spring afternoon.

Visiting Atlanta in July always reminds me that I would never survive a Summer in the American South. On an evening where the air was almost thick enough to drink, a BNSF ES44AC leads a rack train toward a crew change at Inman Yard, just around the corner behind me.

BNSF's 227 job hauls a string of autoracks out of the Port of Vancouver. A classic GP50 in BN livery leads today's train.

From hunts long ago...

It's a steamy Sunday afternoon, as Canadian National train E294 muscles it's train of empty auto racks into the Northern Kettle Moraine at Slinger.

Two big bucks, side-by-side, but one is clearly the winner of this competition. You can see the confidence of his victory in his expression.

Had a drive up to the River Lyne to add this bridge to my set and also to test out my new lens. Not the most ideal of conditions but it seemed to perform ok.

Just a pity about that big fallen tree impacting on the shot, probably due to all the stormy weather of late.

Union Pacific's hotter than hot CHLAZ rounds a curve while climbing the foothills of the Oquirrh Mountains approaching Erda, Utah on June 13, 1992. Remember when auto racks were clean and free of tagging? It has been a while.

The Montserrat Rack Railway is a mountain railway line north of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. The line runs from Monistrol de Montserrat to the mountain-top monastery of Montserrat.

The line is 5 km (3.1 mi) long and has a rail gauge of 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in). The first 1 km (0.6 mi) of the line, between Monistrol and the only intermediate station at Monistrol Vila, is operated by conventional adhesion. The remainder of the line is operated as a rack railway using the Abt system, overcoming a height difference of 550 m (1,804 ft) with a maximum gradient of 15.6 %. The line is electrified with an overhead supply at 1500 V DC.

The line is operated by the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC). (4/3/2015)

Our Daily Challenge: ONE

SSC - Parallel

I was a little flummoxed by this challenge, luckily I looked at my wine rack and realised there was more than one parallel here. Sadly it is rather depleted at the moment but, looking on the bright side, so much space to fill and it does emphasise the parallels!

I decided to change it to a vintage style image to mimic an old cellar.

Focus mechanism for my Speed Graphic view camera. For the September 17 Macro Mondays theme "Cogwheel." Four images focus-stacked.

The camera was manufactured in the late 1940s or early 50s. I bought this one, used, with my paper route money and took pictures for my high school yearbook during the late 1960's.

NS 1137 switches Toyota Distributors on Jacksonville’s Westside. This job easily has 100 auto racks when working. The crew backs down the spur where another locomotive will shuffle empty auto racks down their assigned tracks and an employees from TDI will load the cars.
