Gornergratbahn AG (GGB, BVZ Holding AG): The Gornergrat rack railway connects Zermatt (1605 m a.s.l.) with the summit of Gornergrat (3089 m a.s.l.), in a route of 9.3 km. Of metric gauge, it is one of the few railways in the world that has a three-phase electrification, at 750 V/50 Hz. It uses the Abt system's rack. The line was put into service in 1898, and is electrified from the beginning. The service is mainly provided with EMUs of two cars, of three different generations.
Here we see train 628 from Gornergrat arriving at the Zermatt terminal. It consits of two of the most modern EMUs of this railway, the Bhe 4/6 3095 and 3094. They are part of a series of five built by Stadler Ral in 2022 (Polaris type, series 3091-3095).

The evening local works the AWC FCA autorack facility. At this yard they load/offload FCA products including Caravans and Pacificas built in Windsor and Rams built in Warren, Michigan. The other racks on the right are in CP's Walkerville Yard which parallels Little Yard.

Along with everything else in life, my work hasn’t been too stable lately either. Just 2 years ago we had plenty of business, I racked up over 60,000 miles flying to Japan 3 times, and all over because we had plenty of work going on. Now, amid layoffs and everything else, I’ve been scraping around, looking for travel assignments and work. I even volunteered to head out to the desert in July to support an exercise. I missed out on the trips to South Korea because of scheduling conflicts, but was just offered a quick trip in mid-May.
Colorado Springs, Co. May 17-20
I was there back in 1997 for work and it was such a naturally beautiful area. Didn’t know a lick about taking pictures, so I’ve been doing a little research about there and the surrounding areas. Unfortunately it appears that the Rocky Mountains won’t be in full bloom until June/July?? What’s up with dat??
Anyone have recommendations for things/places to see in central Colorado?
It’s a quick training trip, so I hopefully will have a little bit of time to roam the mountains after work with my camera in search of that idyllic barn shot with the mountains in the background. Even if not, I’ll be surrounded by all of God’s glory and might find some sheep, deer, caribou or other random creature. Hope I can get up close enough with my 85mm lens, I don’t own anything longer.
This is a pipe rack between the foundations of two buildings. What those building were and what they did is unknown but to a few old-timers of the area. Sorry I am old but not old enough.
Someone mentioned the other day about the difficulties of recording the action on the West Sumatran rack railway centered on Padang Panjang.
Lack of trains, failures, high light, no light, rain and lineside access to the better locations were all issues to contend with. But it was fun.
In September 1978, one of seven 0-10-0T rack tanks that were serviceable slogs uphill between Kayutanam and Padang Panjang with empty coal hoppers.

Retrieving proteins from the Fluids Integrated Rack in @NASA's Destiny lab. Protein crystals grow better in microgravity, making it easier for researchers to understand how other molecules interact with them and improve pharmaceutical drugs.

The rack bag for this bike is being made by Swift Industries, here in Seattle. I'm looking forward to picking it up when it's done. It'll be way better than the ratty 15 year old Timbuk2 I've been using.
The rack is intended for lighter loads so I thought I'd experiment with struts running to braze on's halfway up the blades, instead of struts to the front dropouts, which is how I do it for the heavier duty racks that I make.
Stopping again for a set of equipment finishing off in the wash rack enabled me to get the other end of the train with the 500 at the helm...sadly, the reason for the yard trip was to cut this unit off for a replacement "cabbage" NPCU. All good things must come to an end! But its Friday and it was time to head home for a beer...all in a days' work!
