I found the quotation online but I'm not really sure who first said it.

The photo is my own. I modified it using ComicLife software.

..and they're both opening quotation marks, too.

In searching my computer recently I came across a number of layouts from 2003 for an earlier version of my firm's website. I'd wanted to populate the site with quotations I liked but ultimately decided they would alienate potential clients. Little did I know at the time that I'd be working with George to disseminate his words years later.

I'm very honored that legendary adman George Lois is working with us on a line George has christened The Ten Commandments of George Lois. Our current two in the line are " The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything. " and " Great ideas can't be tested. Only mediocre ideas can be tested."

In celebration of George's 80th birthday next month we're running a poll and contest to choose the next quotations to release in the series. Stop by our Facebook page, click to like us and and leave your favorite quote or join the conversation on the posts already started.

From his groundbreaking work at Doyle Dane Bernbach to his controversial Esquire covers to "I want my MTV," George Lois has carved a career sans equal in the advertising industry.

If today's young designers, art directors and copywriters ever needed a savior in the form of a living mentor, it would be George, famous for saying "Advertising is not a science, advertising is an art —no questions about it." George chose this design from among our treatments. A portion of the proceeds from sales of this shirt will benefit the Herschel Levit scholarship fund at Pratt Institute, Mr. Lois' alma mater.

close up detail from the quote block

I created a 2013 calendar using a picture of our cat Raven and a quotation from "Eragon"

While at a friends place recently taking a few photos of the unique knick-knacks she has collected over the years, this figurine captured my attention. Not really interesting enough to just up-load to flickr, but it's amazing what some 'playing around' with cropping and enlarging the original photo will do. Found a suitable scrapbook background for the right side of the image to blend in nicely and add words. This is the end result from just a close-up of the figurine. I'm rather pleased with the result! How about you folk?

This quotation on the memorial to Charles Jancewicz and his wife Elizabeth, is a slightly adapted version of the verse from Act III of 'The Bohemian Girl', a popular 19th century opera, which told the story of Thaddeus, an exiled Polish nobleman, caught up in wars between Austria and Poland.

However, the second line of this verse , in the original, reads, 'the ruthless invader' and does not speak at all of Russia. Jancewicz, also of noble Polish stock, apparently, seems to have found himself in a similar position of enforced exile.

He was born in Warsaw in 1795, the year in which Russia invaded Poland and Poland then ceased to exist, technically, as a separate country. Jancewicz fought first in the Polish army but , in 1812, joined Napoleon's troops and took part in the disastrous Russian campaign, including the infamous winter retreat from Moscow. He must definitely have considered Russia to be his homeland's prime enemy, hence, no doubt, the alteration of the verse.

Romanian Dictionary of Quotations, Selected & Translated by Constantin ROMAN: Letter ‘B’

Bigamy: “ – What’s wrong with bigamy?” “ – It seems like an eminently sensible idea. You have been practising it all your life.” (Antoine BIBESCO (1878 – 1951), Diplomat, answering his cousin, Georges Bibesco, Bucharest, Jockey Club)

British:

“The British and the French who cry over the fate that befell Austria remind me of myself as a child, when I tore out the petals of a daisy one by one and then wept because the stem looked so ugly.”
