Native warm-season annual or short-lived perennial tufted C4 grass with stems 50-110 cm tall. Ligules are membranous with a hairy apex. Flowerheads are open panicles; more or less drooping, to twice as long as broad and 20-60 cm long; branches are erect and appressed to the main stem when young, but spreading at maturity and mostly opposite. Spikelets are 5-10 mm long, 1 mm wide, usually 8-20 flowered, flattened, unawned and with lemmas about 1.5 mm long; seeds are nearly ball-shaped.
Flowers in response to rain in the warmer months. Widespread in a variety of habitats. More common on deep, moister soils in flat to gently sloping country. Native biodiversity. Can form dense stands after good summer rains. Tends to run to head quickly and doesn’t produce a lot of leaf; moderately palatable when young, but avoided by stock when mature as leaves are dry and fibrous.
