5:30 CHALLENGE: 5 INGREDIENTS, 30 MINUTES OR LESS
Deanna Smith's of Canton included rice and a can of corn among the ingredients. Since rice could count as a side dish and it seemed like there already was a healthy amount of veggies, I thought it would be fun to play around with replacement ingredients to give the gumbo a deeper base.
I first tried sauteing onions with creole seasonings and liked the added spice. Flavorful Rotel tomatoes with chiles add further complexity to the gumbo. Depending on how spicy you like things, choose from mild or hot, plain or packed in sauce.

Jenny Block wrote an incredibly honest, interesting book called Open: Love, Sex, and Life in an Open Marriage. She lives in North Dallas and has a husband, girlfriend, daughter, and thriving career as a writer.
I read a preview copy of the book while in Marfa last week and just the sight of the cover sparked some fascinating conversations in the car between Tanya, Erica, Andrea, and me. The whole concept of open marriage usually causes some sort of reaction in people, whether fascination or judgment, curiosity or condemnation. Personally, I alternate between "ick" and "interesting."
I was lucky enough to interview her for Quick and it's the top story on the website today! Sweet! You can read it here.
Oh, and I still have my copy of Open, if anyone would like to read it.

Here's a quick sketch of the houseplan, drawn at 1 pica = 1 foot scale
(and shrunk some, here). The bedrooms are 13.5 and 14' by 11.5' (the
office being a smidge larger); the rectangle portion of the living room
is 18' by 16' wide, the kitchen is 15'9" by 10' with LOTS of cupboads.
Actual sunshine!
Quick, on with the boots and coat and hat!
I quick stumble across the fields to Fleet House, then back along Collingwood, a walk cut short as I saw the gathering rain clouds sweeping in from the west.
Made it with minutes to spare.
Australian-born in Born in York, Western Australia. Enid Bennett appeared on stage in Sydney about 1911 (her sisters, Catherine Bennett and Marjorie Bennett, were also actresses).
She was noted by silent movie Director Fred Niblo who put her in a lead role in her first Silent Movie 'Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford' (1916). 'Officer 666' (1916) was her last Australian Movie.
Coaxed to Hollywood where she appeared in 'The Aryan' (1916) with William S. Hart. Followed by 'Princess of the Dark' (1917) where she was the female lead to John Gilbert.
She married American director Sidney Franklin early in her career, but they were divorced shortly thereafter.
So in 1918 she married director Fred Niblo, who later directed the second film version of Ben Hur. In 1922, she starred in only three films, but one of those became her most famous role, the female lead of "Maid Marian" in 'Robin Hood' with Douglas Fairbanks.
She made a great many silent movies of which I have only tagged a few.
Her very first transition to Sound was in 'Good Medicine' (1929) with Edward Everett Horton.
'Skippy' (1931) with Jackie Cooper was her second sound venture.
'Strike Up the Band' (1940) with Mickey Rooney & Judy Garland was to be her last but one sound venture.
'The Big Store' (1941) with the Marx Brothers where she had an uncredited part as a Clerk in the movie, it was to be her last.
She retired after 1941, eventually residing with her family in Malibu, California, where she died in 1969 from a heart attack, aged 75.
On the front porch at 601 Market St., Laredo, TX, about 1930. The porch swing had not been hung yet. She (my ggmother), was a pretty woman even in old age. She had married three times, to LeValle, then Quick, lastly a McKenzie, who either died or abandoned her. John A. Quick fathered all her surviving children. The story goes that, when she died, her children, embarrassed and confused by her last surname, buried her in an unmarked grave. Catherine Rachel O'Donnell LeValle Quick McKenzie, 1861-1935.
