The end of Cowes Week (international yachting event) is always marked with a firework display from Cowes seafront. Tonight's show had a double budget - probably the best I've seen. Sadly my photographs don't do it justice but this was my first proper attempt at capturing them.

This is blurry, and soft, and noisy, and weird, and yet ANOTHER portrait. I have issues.

Pirates and Pilots, Plains, Piscatores and Pyrotechnics: A grand night out indeed !!

It was just a random conversation that set wheels in motion for what became one of the most memorable evenings ever. Dusting off the week of work our intrepid explorers eschewed the usual Friday TV offerings and packed the boots with blankets and cake aplenty. Hitching on Spirit we set off southwards. On arrival at our destination we were met by a merry bunch of nautical folks and roguish rapscallions who held arms out in welcome, the ladies (young and old) resplendent in their fine moustaches. More pirates appeared from our own convoy and we headed beachwards (ably assisted by Captain Latimer and his motorised skiff-puller) Here we were introduced to Wing Commander Jeff “Tache” Matthews and his able gunner “Pickles”. Pleasantries exchanged we crewed up (I got to row in Latimer Ledja… and yes I did make the obligatory oar comparisons! A cracking boat indeed! ). We took it easy through the rocky outcrops pulling to rest in a flat calm patch of water where the first inter club “fish off” began courtesy of Whitburn’s foresight to provide handlines. It wasn’t long (literally a few minutes) before fish were being pulled into each boat (and released), Captain Latimer picking up the plaudits for first catch and biggest fish. A rumble was heard in the distance, this became a loud groan which quickly grew in magnitude to a thunderous boom as two jets screamed over head. Sunderland Air show had kicked off… and we were directly underneath it (wow!!). Open eyes, whoops of excitement and rushes adrenaline filled the boats. This was replaced by respectful nostalgia as Spitfire and Hurricanes gracefully spiraled around us… Awestruck we headed back for a crew change and a fresh set of pirates headed out in return. Some folks stayed at the beach whilst others retired to the clifftops for an alternate view, warm fires and hospitality (more of that to come) what happened next was unreal … out of the clouds shot the Red Arrows display team twisting and turning in formation, narrowly missing each other in a jaw dropping feats of skill and wonder…. At this point it became apparent that the trusty Captain had placed our two vessels almost bang on the plane’s centre line for the display. The video posted earlier (part 1) shows this absolutely unique perspective (great job Cecil), with the whoops from the spellbound crew only exceeded by the shrieks from the garden as the planes unexpectedly shot over the rooftops. Buzzing like excited children we pulled the boats to shore and headed for some well earned tea (or PImms for some) and refreshments. This time it was a metaphorical boat that was pushed out for pooled supper with Whitburn providing trays of slow roast beef, secret gravy (Robert, you can keep the red arrows, this was the revelation for me!!) artisan bread (Bob’s) and a crate (literally) of langoustine amongst other treats. Amble filled the cake table with sticky toffee, drizzles, brownies, cakes and cupcakes and the stove in the art room (great abstracts) kept the kettles coming as folks sat by the fires and talked the night away. We were occasionally distracted from grazing by the thunderous boom of the Euro-fighter (I think) and a simply mesmerising pair of plains bedecked with coloured lights that cast fireworks into the sky. A cracking firework display from across the bay brought silence from us all (apart the occasional oohs and aahhs) before thanks, hugs and handshakes set us back northwards… In short (if that's at all possible) .. eyes filled with wonder, souls filled with joy and bellies filled to bursting ….. (and let’s not forget ,on occasion, pants almost filled with fright!!) To all involved Thankyou.....

Throwing 2-1/2 pound bricks of sodium metal into the ocean near Sutro Baths, San Francisco Summer, 1977...it was always a laugh to throw it off the "Cliff House" restaurant and hear the shouts and oohs and awwws...Did it off the bay in Sausalito too in the 1980's....same reactions...startled delight mixed with a little fear.....good clean fun (except the Na forms lye which locally raises the pH astronomically....not a good thing) Potassium metal gives a red light, and Cesium or Rubidium are so expensive and explode so fast they're not worth the money...also, try buying 2.5 lb bricks of sodium metal now & the DEA will be knocking on yer door faster than little Johnny Fuckerfaster did his thing! Unfortunately Na can be used to make drugs, plus the BATF takes a dim view on ANY types of explosions.... ;^p

I attended the Virgin Money Fireworks Concert as a press photographer yesterday, for Hotique, in the centre of Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens. The Edinburgh International Festival and Edinburgh's summer festival season comes to a conclusion at this event. Set against the iconic backdrop of Edinburgh’s historic Castle, this event brings together stirring orchestral music from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and magnificent pyrotechnics, specially choreographed by international fireworks artists, Pyrovision.

At the show featuring rock band Great White pyrotechnics set the walls on fire and in literally three minutes 100 people died. I lived 10 mins. from the club. I had a good friend who was at the show and didn't want to carry his coat around so he went outside to put it in his car. Meanwhile his friend at the bar thought he was taking too much time so he started walking towards the door to get his friend at the time the fire broke. The friend immediately made it out the door as the fire and smoke and stampede ensued making it to safety. It was pure luck my friend went out to his car because where they were seated at the bar was farthest from the exit and almost all in that area died.

split into 5 teams of at least 2 and handed a bucket of pyrotechnic fun and some matches.... what could possibly go wrong?

Much to the amusement of my dirty mind I thought that a lot of the firecrackers had names you could almost expect to be given to sex toys- Blow Your Mind, Cosmic Gate, Fantasia, Electrical Storm, Stardust.

The theatre on floor five of the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion on Chalmers Street part of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary is surely one of the lesser known attractions at this years Edinburgh Fringe.

It is certainly one of its most intimate.

Performances vary in length, the one I attended lasted around 45 minutes, had an audience of one and a cast of ... well ... I’m not quite sure, so let me explain.

We’d arrived in Edinburgh by train, on Tuesday. We’d booked several things to see in advance and intended, as usual, to add others which we happened upon, whilst viewing previews and picking up flyers as we strolled around the city, especially along the Royal Mile.

It was whilst walking back to our hotel on Tuesday night from a Barnado’s Big Comedy Benefit at the EICC that I became aware of a problem with my left eye. I knew what it was. I’d had a similar problem with my right eye in 2010.

So Wednesday morning started early with a call to NHS 111 Scotland and by 9am we’d Uber’d to and were at ERI, seen by 10am and on our way by 11. I’d been given an appointment at the Eye Pavilion for 4pm that same afternoon.

There I was seen by a doctor and invited to come back the following day to get my eye put back together.

And so I’m contemplating the NHS.

The media tells me it’s doomed ... it’s in crisis ... it’s failing. It might have problems, true, you might even go so far as to say that they’re serious problems.

But no, I’m sorry, I don’t accept that, won’t accept that.

And neither will there heroic staff.

Some of you who no me well know I and my family have had occasion to use this wonderful institution rather more than we would have preferred to do in recent years: Has it failed us even once? NO it has not.

To the media, I would ask you to introduce a bit of balance to what is usually said about our NHS ... and just occasionally report about how truly brilliant it is and the staff working in it.

It’s also by the way a superb vantage point to view the fireworks at the end of each nights Edinburgh Military Tattoo

A store in a strip mall on Lakeshore that rents Russian (?) videos and sells fireworks. One-stop shopping!

I just shot this off tonight to test the stars in the shell. It most likely can't be seen on this small screen but they didn't test well do to alot of left over sparks which hit the ground. It's fine when wet like tonight but would hate to use these when it's dry. I really need to get a new video camera this shell went from blue to purple to willow but on video it just looks like a bright white is the color. If your reading this and have an intrest in pyrotechnics please give your thought. If your intrested in making fireworks I'ld love to talk.

Scheduled every Friday- Saturday-Sunday 7pm, People gather around Mall of Asia's Esplanade to watch the free Pyrotechnics show.
