Silk threads bring their own fireworks

Just a couple of seconds before the shutter closed on this time exposure, fireworks erupted over the distant horizon, almost exactly in line with the direction my lens happened to be pointing. I could not believe my good fortune to have captured the moment. The shutter was open for only 20 seconds!

..in more ways than one...!!

aka THE LOST FILES.

In November 2015 I took a series of photographs on a spectacular morning out in the Peak District. One of them was shortlisted in the 2015 Outdoor Photographer of the Year competition and was published in the book of the same year.

A few months later the copyright of the same image was purchased by VisitBritain (official tourist board) along with another of my photographs of the Great Ridge.

A different image which I still sell on my website was shortlisted in the 2021 British Photography Awards, the final results of which are still to be decided, but imminent.

In 2018 I had a hard drive failure and on that drive were the raw files from the morning along with 60,000 others totalling 1.7TB. Since then I have been managing with jpegs as the cost of retrieval was proving too high.

Finally however, a few weeks ago I bit the bullet (after several aborted attempts) and the damaged drive was sent to DataQuest in Portsmouth. A couple of weeks later (and an investment of around £550) a new drive drive was returned to me with virtually every file intact and ready to import to Lightroom which I did yesterday.

Searching through the images from that November morning again I came across another different composition which, for some reason, I had ignored for 5.5 long years???? Why???

Anyway, here it is, having never been seen before (including me apparently!) and presented humbly to anyone who cares to look. I hope you like it.

Another BIG lesson learned

Lightning lights up the sky behind Sedona's Cathedral Rock (middle) and Courthouse Butte (left). There was just enough moonlight filtering through the clouds to get some detail in the landscape during this long exposure.

Thalictrum is a tall, willowy perennial that produces an abundance of fluffy mauve flowers on glistening black stems during the height of summer.

Meadow Rue is perfect for filling gaps in woodland gardens and shaded borders, particularly as the elegant foliage provides an ideal backdrop for smaller perennials.

The foliage of Thalictrum can be added to summer bouquets for a delicate touch.

Unbelievable, but a member of Ranunculaceae, the buttercup family, its common name is Chinese Meadow Rue.

Gorgeous leafage and pretty flowers, it loves moist but well drained soils.

It has lavender-purple flowers, each small flower is held high and is made up of tiny strands, like downy thistles, giving the plant a hazy, fluffy effect.

The foliage is scalloped and lacy looking.

In my garden, it is next to my Peonies.

So, more lowers from my garden...

The Hong Kong WinterFest is an annual outdoor festival that takes place at the West Kowloon Cultural District, usually during the last two months of the year.

Other than the usual Christmas decorations and trees lining up in Christmas Town, this year's edition has also been enhanced with the first ever Winter Harbourfront Pyrotechnics as well.

A but much huh ? ! Yes, a bit much. A big bit !

Fireworks from San Francisco’s unsanctioned July 4th festivities

My one thought for this weeks theme was to photograph my fingertips while holding a lit match.

This was fairly simple to do and I managed to guess the ambient exposure and adjust the flash settings to suit fairly quickly.

Rather than strike the match normally and then waste time focussing on it I held the match and lit it with a gas lighter before triggering the exposure. The background is a silver card covered with glitter.

Several matches later and taking quite a few shots to see all the different flame effects I could come up with I was finished.

Amusingly after taking my first shot I pressed "Play" on the camera to see how it turned out and completely forgot I was holding a lit match.......Just remembering in time to blow it out before I got a painful reminder. :-)

This firework display went on for about an hour. The greenish glow on the top's of the clouds is from the moon struggling to make it's entrance

Stamens like an exploding firework in the borders, Hypericum flowers and the Bumblebees love them.

It's an annual affair with NDP. My first time at this angle for fireworks so was caught off guard during the initial burst.

Total of 8 fireworks shots with 1 base shot merged together.

"Pyrotechnics in Prescott:" I apologize for the delinquency in my posting, but this was from this summer's 4th of July celebration of fireworks at Watson Lake. The full moon had just begun to crest over Glassford Hill to be able to help illuminate some of the granite boulders in front of me on the lake. I just wanted to take a moment to thank those involved in the planning and delivery of the event, including the fireworks technicians, the City of Prescott, and everyone else involved in helping our town try to have a safe and positive Independence Day celebration.

Nature seems to have turned upside down with the Sun setting in the east over the ocean in this shot from the beach at Duck, NC. No funny stuff on this. This is how it was at 6:57 PM a year ago. I had never seen anything like this before or since. Have a great Sunday everybody.
