Distant Shores

More experiments with PWM-derived colorfields.

Ingredients: one PWM LED strip light, one white LED, one piece of artistic glassware, no lens.

Back from Maine -- we had a great visit with my parents and two of our three kids. Not too much shooting, and I had to use my Coolpix (my new D70 has a lens problem). I'll be posting some of the results.

Can't wait to see what you all have been up to!

A quick soujourn to my favourite manky tunnel to wave some bright strips of LEDs.

No post processing.

PWM stands for Plant Water Management. A novel way to use hydroponics to grow plants in space – no earth (lower case 😉) required! As demonstrated here by Mark (who has great pedagogical skills), and me (who was not very awake apparently 😜). Growing plants and food in space is important as fresh food has the most vitamins and is healthiest. We have made great progress growing crops in weightlessness where nothing is easy. How do you get food into the plant roots in an environment where their is no soil, no rain and even if there was it would float all around! Hydroponics is the answer in this experiment where everything a plant needs is "injected" straight to the roots, the red fluids you can see. Researchers compare results with control studies on Earth to prepare for longer voyages farther into our Solar System. www.nasa.gov/feature/glenn/2021/project-examines-how-to-w...

Flight UA 2032 pulling up to the gate from Denver (DEN.)

A while ago, when I was whining about the nerve-wrecking PWM noise of PF motors, someone suggested to use them for electrics instead of diesels, as the original, high-pitch sound of electric locos is actually pretty similar.

And so I did: here's a 2-axle truck with jackshaft and side rods, typical for German 1910s electrics, built around a PF M motor.

This is actually version nr 7; the previous ones had the motor mounted atop of the truck's frame, which made it nearly impossible to build a 4-wide hood or to keep enough clearance around the pivot point. With the motor now mounted between the wheels, the whole truck remains very low profile and allows all sorts of pivot arrangements, hood widths, and decorations.

I haven't tested this setup yet, but if all goes well, two of these trucks will eventually power a Lego E71.
