Catalan Nationalist Riots, Carrer Comtal, Barcelona, October 2019.
The independence movement has now resulted in two weeks of near continuous rioting, police battles and attempts to shutdown infrastructure. This was triggered by the sentencing of a number of nationalist regional political figures for sedition and misuse of public funds in connection to the illegal 2017 independence referendum.
These photographs are a continuation of the State of Independence project, for which I was awarded an ARPS distinction in October 2018. It is a project that I had hoped would not need any continuation.

I think I get street photography. Observation and witty commentary about people's behaviour in public places, drawing the eye to relationships and so forth. It can be exciting, clever, touching and comedic, sometimes even all of these at once. What I don't really get however, is the sub-genre of 'people walking past things, mostly buildings' where no relation exists between the people and the static object. Having said that, here is my contribution to that genre.

There is something remarkable, on occasion, about the blurring of natural and manmade things. Here, albeit in black and white, there is such sympathy in tone and patterning between the stone wall and the tree trunk.
