What does it mean when robins sing?
Its purpose is two-fold: to defend a territory and to attract a mate. Therefore, spring song is far more powerful in males. Robins are adapted to life in poor light and are often active in half-light when few other birds are about.
The robin is one of the few birds in the UK that sing all year round. This is due to the importance of holding winter territories.
Only for a short period in late summer while they are moulting and inconspicuous do robins stop singing. Both sexes sing.
As with the nightingale, the song is usually delivered from a concealed perch within a bush or a tree exposed perches are infrequent. Autumn and spring songs are distinctly different. The autumn song starts after the moult, from late summer onwards. It is more subdued and melancholy in its tone, while the spring song is powerful, confident and upbeat.
The spring song can start as early as mid-December, reaching full force in spring. Its purpose is two-fold: to defend a territory and to attract a mate. Therefore, spring song is far more powerful in males.

A diminutive diver, one of our smallest ducks, often very energetic in its feeding. Related to the goldeneyes and, like them, nests in cavities; but unlike other hole-nesting ducks, the Bufflehead is small enough to use unmodified old nest holes of Northern Flickers, giving it a ready source of good nest sites. Less sociable than most ducks, seen in pairs or small groups, almost never in large flocks. Takes wing easily from the water, flies with rapid wingbeats. The name 'Bufflehead' is derived from 'buffalo-head,' for the male's odd puffy head shape.

This purpose of this shot was mostly to test focusing my new Yashica T4. I also have been shooting the newest version of Kodak Gold 200. The greens may seem a little saturated, but the reality is that Seattle is super green this time of year.

What I love so much about going back to photos I have taken over the years is how they not only bring back memories, but even more so the exact feelings I had while taking them. This was more than one and a half years ago when I had just moved to Stuttgart and began studying Visual Communication. It was a time of beautiful autumn colours, new friends and feeling whole again — and it is always lovely to remember those first weeks of a new life.

Her language—spoken only by those strong enough to choose
She offers herself, reverent and thankful for this allowance.

Burns have entertainment value, but also purpose.
I have a special burn barrel with the bottom cut out. This is so I can move it around and place it on top of the large clumps of invasive non-native grass that I am trying to kill which is invading my wildflower meadow. (It's too rocky here to dig these deep-rooted grasses out).
The best time to kill grass with fire is in the summer when it is putting its energy into its leaves. In dormancy the plant's energy (and biomass) is safer, down in its roots. However, there is not enough burn load with the dead grass itself to eradicate it, so I use junk mail and other paper products. This is how grass was designed--to be grazed to the ground and be able to regrow.
I will continue to work this small plot through the summer, then it will take a couple years to build the micro-organisms back up, which I will hasten with an inoculation of soil from the creek, compost, and sprays of molasses. Then hopefully the wildflowers will recolonize.

Captured from Carreg Onnen Bay, Strumble lighthouse stands on the largest of three small islets, known as Ynys Meicel / St Michael's island. built in 1908 this lighthouse is one of the last lighthouses built around the UK coast.
Light keepers access was via a narrow 20 meter iron foot bridge connecting the island to the mainland, the bridge is still in place for maintenance purpose.
Strumble Head is also designated as an SSSI, or Site of Special Scientific Interest, since January 1954, in an attempt to protect its fragile biological and geological elements.
The islets that lay off this headland were created with underwater volcanic activity some 450 million years ago, during the Ordovician period,
This rock is known as Basalt pillow lavas.

Conneaut, Ohio. USA.
I was going through some files on my computer and came across this image and realized I had never posted it on Flickr. This is one of my favorite all-time images and experiences. My wife Fran and myself were in a shallow lagoon at the Conneaut sandspit, along the edge of Lake Erie in mid August.
After birds migrate across Lake Erie, this is the first piece of real estate they hit. Many birds are exhausted from the flight and make a pit stop here. This Phalarope literally fell out of the sky about 10 feet in front of me. The light and reflection were perfect but the bird was too close for me to get the bird and reflection. I couldn't move back for fear of spooking the bird, so I carefully took the tele-converter off my lens. Now I'm in business. Was my heart pounding. The Phalarope was cooperative for about 15 minutes-an eternity for a bird photographer.

The primary purpose of the Porte de Trèves (square tower measuring around 8m in length and 17m in height) is to enable access to the city.
In the year 1332, John the Blind, count of Luxembourg and La Roche, king of Bohemia and Poland, grants the City a Charter. In exchange, the city is obliged to ensure the upkeep of the city walls, which the citizens must keep guarded. In 1688, the city walls are demolished by order of the king Louis XIV, and the Porte de Trèves is converted into a prison and halfway house until the First World War.
Restoration work was carried out during the 19th century. The damage caused by the Von Rundstedt Offensive in 1944-1945 also almost destroyed the building.
To this day, the Porte de Trèves is the last remaining vestige of the fortifications that surrounded the city in the middle ages.

I face a conundrum in my life as my bucket list continues to grow even as my days remaining on this planet decrease. This summer I had a goal of doing more photography of birds in flight. My number one target is to get a pheasant taking off and getting photos of it flying through the air but my efforts so far have produced a choice of blurred photos, unflattering photos of pheasant hind ends or nice photos of landscapes where the pheasant recently flew over.
But little by little, I am making some progress. My wife says I have a strong fascination with kingfishers and she is probably right. So far this summer I have singular photos of kingfishers sitting on a tree with a minnow hanging out of their mouth, blasting into the water and coming up with great force.
However, to capture a kingfisher from a perch on a tree through his dive and flight back to the perch with his catch in consecutive shots has not matched my skill set. This photo was in a series of shots of a kingfisher on his way down to the water where he had spotted a minnow swimming near the surface.
I was pleased with the colors and clarity and impressed by the look of the sole purpose on his bird face.

Testing a preloved CANON RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS ST lens from MBP. Tricky shooting, the local mini forest is not actively managed and chaotic. The paths wander as trees grow and local dog walkers trim branches. We had a lot of trees blown down in storms over the last few years.
Aberdeenshire (Scottish Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It takes its name from the old County of Aberdeen which had substantially different boundaries. Modern Aberdeenshire includes all of what was once Kincardineshire, as well as part of Banffshire. The old boundaries are still officially used for a few purposes, namely land registration and lieutenancy. Aberdeenshire Council is headquartered at Woodhill House, in Aberdeen, making it the only Scottish council whose headquarters are located outside its jurisdiction. Aberdeen itself forms a different council area (Aberdeen City). Aberdeenshire borders onto Angus and Perth and Kinross to the south, Highland and Moray to the west and Aberdeen City to the east. Traditionally, it has been economically dependent upon the primary sector (agriculture, fishing, and forestry) and related processing industries. Over the last 40 years, the development of the oil and gas industry and associated service sector has broadened Aberdeenshire's economic base, and contributed to a rapid population growth of some 50% since 1975. Its land represents 8% of Scotland's overall territory. It covers an area of 6,313 square kilometres
I came upon this heap of discarded jack-o-lanterns awaiting their fate the day after Halloween. The scene was visually jarring yet highly appealing. I was struck with a sense of sadness looking at the tangle of carved faces. Each one imbued with a sense of individuality, as varied as the people that created them. Hours before, they had radiated a glow of soft warmth, illuminated against the cold night sky by small candles. The flickering light added feelings of comfort and animation. My imagination and childhood memories took it from there. But lying here, purpose fulfilled and stripped of their original joyful context, fantasy and reality collided abruptly. I watched the decline of the jack-o-lanterns over the next couple of days. The carved features quickly took on a gummy appearance and the pumpkins seemed to settle into the earth. The end came suddenly when the jack-o-lanterns were tossed unceremoniously into the bed of a truck and hauled off for hog food. Dust unto dust.

in magaluf, a seagull takes a solitary promenade, its plumage a contrast of light and shadow in the monochrome world. while pigeons blur into the background, this seagull stands out with a poised demeanor, a lone wanderer among the flock. the softness of its feathers, the sharpness of its gaze, and the grace of its stance make it a portrait of independence. here, amidst the hustle of scattered breadcrumbs and fluttering wings, it moves with a sense of purpose, undisturbed, its path as certain as the tide.

Look for Red-bellied Woodpeckers hitching along branches and trunks of medium to large trees, picking at the bark surface more often than drilling into it. Like most woodpeckers, these birds have a characteristic undulating flight pattern.

The purpose of this Berlin trip was mainly to see Courtney Marie Andrews at the Privatclub in Kreuzberg - I attended a gig at the venue last summer and on both occasions the lighting has been dreadful, but some interesting opportunities presented themselves.
General purpose tractor, crew of two, 1x manipulator arm.
Fixed! Much better with a tighter triangle on the tread shape. Still struggling with inside the tread and mechanism, it's really ugly in there, don't look too closely! But overall the vehicle has that chunky/boxy look I wanted to achieve. I guess irl the treads might be spayed out from the body more, to widen the load on the ice, but it just looks so much cooler having them tucked in tightly :-)
The white cockpit canopy thing was ok but I dunno, it made the vehicle feel a little too comfortable. Too many windows; reducing the viewport and really shrinking it down kinda gives it a squinting vibe, implies the environment is much more hostile. Like a tank feels: no windows = very hostile outside. It was hard to articulate at the start but having finished it I can see why it was bothering me.
Thanks everyone for the advice and comments on this one, much appreciated.
