"Professor" Brian Patterson of the Great Dickens Christmas Faire presents a Victorian puppet show at the Museum of Performance & Design on Saturday, November 12, 2 -3 pm.
Today my class finished their puppets. Then they practiced in partners telling each other what their community helper puppets do. (It might look like this guy is some kind of a partial skeleton but it's supposed to be an x-ray technician holding an x-ray in his hand!)
Traditional Burmese puppetry performance in the foyer of our hotel in Mandalay. The performers were highly skilled and the range of complex movements they achieved in animating the puppets was amazing.
My son needed some puppets for school. I made these for him from scraps, rags and a pair of pantyhose. I was sad to part with them.

Tommy and I made quick little rod marionettes today. We did some improvised scenes with them and I ended up doing a stop-motion with this guy.
For it's 10th anniversary the Puppet Museum in Lisbon invited 10 illustrators
to give new perspective to a selection of puppets from different countries and cultures.
I was one of the lucky ten and my illustration is about the vietnam water puppets.
This piece is cut paper and acrylic paint, plus sequins, beads, and string. In the beginning I planned to show hands holding the strings, but this is what happened, and I like how it turned out.
Clay sculpt of my puppet head, inspired by fantasy art such as The Dark Crystal and developed from my CG sculpt. Changes include larger exaggerated wrinkles, larger (friendlier) eyes and a larger more expressive mouth. This will be moulded in a three-part mould and re-cast in latex, which will be added to the rest of the body (a half body without legs, due to time constraints). The mouth will be operated by a hand inserted under the body.
On the way back from Ha Long Bay, our tour included a stop at a small village for a Water Puppet show. I went to see puppets being made for Shadow puppet theatre.
Wayang Kulit is a unique form of theatre employing light and shadow. The puppets are crafted from buffalo hide and mounted on bamboo sticks. When held up behind a piece of white cloth, with an electric bulb or an oil lamp as the light source, shadows are cast on the screen.
Wayang Kulit plays are invariably based on romantic tales, especially adaptations of the classic Indian epics, "The Mahabarata" and "The Ramayana". Some of the plays are also based on local happenings (current issues) or other local secular stories. It is up to the conductor or "Tok Dalang" to decide his direction.
